Chest, Box, Military, Secretary, Portable, Teak, Brass fittings, 1830s Style
This appears to be a solid teak military style portable secretary box made for writing and keeping important papers. The four corners are brass bound and there are sturdy brass handles on the two sides like the old military style secretaries from the 1830s which this resembles. I do not believe this was a copy as it has been used as a desk. But rather a 20th century portable desk that actually served that purpose. Boxes like this from the 1830s are going for thousands of dollars now. The inside is pristine and flawless. There is a writing surface that lifts up to reveal a lift out tray. In the lid of the secretary are places to put the papers you are working on. The lock is solid and in perfect working condition and comes with a brass key. The surface is oiled Teak and the box is solid Teak throughout. There are lapped corners rather than ... moredovetails. It has been used and shows some signs of wear on the outside. There is a narrow crack on the top due to lack of humidity that has been repaired and an ink stain that the previous owner tried to removed from the front. See pictures. Wonderful vintage. Hand-made solid cedar dome top/ hump back storage chest or train trunk. This vintage chest is handmade of ¾” solid cedar and smells wonderful when you open it. It weighs in at around 12 lbs. unboxed. Has a pieced, domed lid with two handles that are screwed in on either side to make it easy to carry. It has two gold-tone hinges on the backside and measures 18” long x 14” wide x 12.5” high at the very top of the domed lid. The lid itself is made with 14 separate pieces of hand-beveled cedar pieces, secured with small finishing nails in order to form the domed lid. Cracks, loose joints omissing parts. The inside drawers are perfect with dividers in 2 drawers. It has a few dings on the feet apparently from vacume. The finish is also in very good condition. There is one surface scratch on one drawer that follows the line of the banding so it is no that noticable(see pix) There are some very light surface scratches on top which is also banded. MEASUREMENTS: 55" tall x 28 1/2" wide x 21" deep Item offered is a very nice banded Councill Craftsmen solid Mahogany chest on chest with solid brass swing pulls and faux key holes. It is a beautiful piece of furniture with a very nice Mahogany grain wood and ... morenice banding on each drawer and the top. The drawers pull very smoothly and the 2 drawers in the center have dividers. It has 8 drawers and all are slightly different sizes. It really is a beautiful highend piece of furniture. I have 2 but the other which matches exactly was mishandled by the movers and needs a little tlc not refinished but touch up is needed. Im selling a Casa bique large chest. It is Fossilized Coral veneer on wood, with a Brass inlay. Its heavy and very well made with a velvet liner. Its in great condition, i just dont have the room for it anymore. Casa Bique was a custom furniture maker in the 1980s that manufactured in the Philippines in the same factory that produced the designs by Karl Springer and Maitland Smith. Cool piece of history Foot locker/ shipping crate from San Francisco CA to Cincinnati OH in 1951 From the Navy Base in San Francisco. It seems, to his hometown in OH Lt. Joseph B Andrews Jr. A"people search" says he would be 102 years old today- Joseph Bolton Andrews) Use it as a storage chest. A trunk for collectibles, add legs for an end table or coffee table, use it as a tool box, ETC! The color is a military green. With a very slight tinge of blue- hard to photograph just right. The photo closest to the true color is photo#2- the closeup of the leather and bracket. The inside was sectioned off originally. Off white daisy type flowers, wisps of lilac flowers, thing greenery tied with a darker blue toned with light blue center ribbon in the front bouquet and a rich tone of deep pink ribbon on the side bouquets ~ the center carving ... moredips lower and has a blue teal floral design as does the sides of the front doors- these smaller designs are quite lovely but they only accentuate the beauty of the large bouquets ~ there are two large handles on each drawer and decorative keyhole designs all a dark bronze color and metal ~ the top is very curvy and is faux painted in a medium tan tone with darker painted veining running throughout characteristic of many beautiful hand decorated pieces from the 1950's time period. There are some scratches in the top wood piece which is faux painted but nothing detracting ~ there is an area where a crack seems to be wanting to form as shown in my photo at the top right side of a drawer ~ other than that. There is the typical slight chippiness to sides and feet area but this is the look and the painting is vibrant and gorgeous on the piece and nothing detracts from it's unique loveliness! Nice Set Antique or Vintage Trunk Lid Chains
You know I can't throw anything away. And to find a pair is rare. Each measures 12-1/2" long with 1-3/8" long brackets. They are aged and one is a bit rusty but they match and will match the age of your box or trunk. I will combine on shipping but rates have gone up again.
