Vintage, casement window stays salvaged from the windows of a former cream production plant(see last photos) in Southeastern Pennsylvania. The plant was built during the 1890's, however, these most likely replaced the originals sometime during the middle of the previous century. Each stay is made of solid steel. And was originally brass plated. Much of the plating wore off over the years leaving them with a nice, distressed finish. The amount of plating varies from part to part(see"Group photos" to compare) If you are not familiar with this type of hardware. It keeps the window open at a specified distance from the sill. When you wish to open the window, loosen the knob by simply turning it in a counter clockwise direction. Open the window as far as you like, and once you wish to lock it in place, simply turn the knob clockwise until can't turn anymore. This will prevent wind from moving the window. At the point of salvage. The stays were painted, dirty, and rusty(see"Prior to restoration" photo) Since then, we've spent hours removing the paint, cleaning the dirt and rust from the outside of each stay, and greasing them to facilitate their movement. All stays are in great shape with no breaks. Cracks, deep scratches, or gouges. All moveable parts move smoothly. The condition is very good with the latches having age darkening dings and scratches and loss of finish from age. All I did to these was a quick wiping down with an oiled rag. Originally, it was copper-plated, however, most of the plating wore off over the years and only traces of copper could be seen here and there. If you are not familiar with this type of hardware. Here is a cool little casement window that was removed from a home that was built in the 1920's. It comes complete with hardware. The paint is flaking and loose, and the glazing is missing in spots. The rod is approx. 12" There is an extra one which I am including as well which does not have the circular knob or the rectangular part on the slider part. These are fairly heavy for their size and appear to be well made. A couple of the pivot points are a little sticky. They do have wear from age and use. Up for bidding are original 2 sets of casement window locks& hinges from my house which was built 1928. I installed new replacement casement windows for my house last month. These locks are in good shape as you can see from the picture. Also included are the original screws. I did clean up the items. But there may be some white paint on them. The brass locks were not painted at all, but the catch for them were. Antique Vintage Brass Casement Window Sash Hook Swing Arm Lock Black Handle Door
As a vintage and antique hardware nerd. I am really not even sure how to describe these, I just know that I love them! It seems that they were originally designed to be used to latch a casement type window. They are brass with black coated handles. The black substance appears to be rubber. But I can't really tell, it is hard and shiny almost like bakelite or some form of heavy rubberized plastic. The end forms a hook that would keep a brass bar from being raised on an antique casement window. I also think that it could be used as a door latch. Or something to keep a chest or antique type freezer closed. Please note that one is left facing and one is right facing if they are both to be latched facing downward.
