This lovely antique early 19th century French church banner is made of silk which is woven with metallic thread and coloured silks. The face and hands of Jesus are paper which is hand-painted. The banner is edged with metallic bullion fringe and has a rod incorporated in the silk at the top. It is in good condition for its age. But there are some marks on the silk ground, mainly in the bottom left hand corner. ANTIQUE 19th Century Fiddleback Chasuble Vestment matching Chalice Pall & Stole
Late 19th century hand sewn Fiddleback Chasuble(from Casula. Meaning little tent) with matching Chalice Pall and Stole. The items are all handsewn, top surface is crushed velvet(purple) and the reverse is silk. The orphery is a gold colored brocade with metalic thread interwoven, hand stitched. All three pieces, the Chasuble, Chalice Pall and Stole have similiar material, stitching and broccade except the Stole has metallic spring-like fringes. Dimensions: The Chasuble is overall length approximately 75" x 25-1/4" wide. The Chalice Pall is 25-1/4" x 25-1/4" The Stole is 35" long x 7-1/4" wide narrowing to 3-1/2" Damage: Chasuble: Isolated seam separation.Mall, moth damage holes on inside silk lining, some loss due to wear on velvet napp. Chalice Pall, drop of wax on velvet napp. Stole has minor wear to napp.

Antique French Altar Frontal Banner, Pelican Applique, 19th century France
Amazing rare antique French altar frontal banner featuring the rare pelican feeding it's young. The bead work and gilt trim is stunning on this century old piece. Embroidered with crosses throughout the banner with gold metallic fringe dripping from the scalloped edge. Made of heavy ivory brocade with ivory silk backing. The center features the piece de resistance, the large ornate beaded applique in the center of the banner, featuring the Christian Pelican symbol. The mother pelican symbolizes that in a time of famine a mother pelican would draw blood from her own chest and give the blood to her chicks. Thus the pelican symbol in Christianity, also called pelican-in-her-piety, symbolizes the sacrifice of Christ on the cross(because he gave his blood for others) as well as the Eucharist(because it represents Christ's blood and provides ... morespiritual nourishment) The frontal measures 46.5" long x 20" wide. The applique in the center measures 13" x 13" These 19th c. French altar frontals with the heavy ornate beading and appliques are difficult to come by and were used for high mass in the churches. We were lucky enough to acquire four from a recent estate sale of a New Orleans collector of French religious antiquities. It's in wonderful condition for it's age. No tears, but some age related tea staining. Please ask questions before bidding.
