Antique School Desk and Chair Adjustable Metal Legs Wood Top Kenney & Wolkins
Charming antique school desk and chair. Made by Kenney Bros. and Wolkins of Boston. MA, this set has nuts in the supports to allow for each piece to have its height adjusted. The legs of the desk and pedestal of the chair are black painted metal and have holes for securing them to the floor. The desk top and seat of the chair look like they are made of maple. The inside of the desk has been painted a soft green color and there is a hole in the desk top for holding an inkwell. This desk dates from sometime between 1902(when Kenney Bros. and Wolkins merged) and 1930, which is when the company changed its name and discontinued furniture making. The desk and chair are both in very good condition. Although these pieces were obviously put to their intended use. There is some wear to the surfaces, including marks on the desk top and edge and a gouge ... morenear the top of the desk. See pictures. It also looks like an industrous student carved their initials in the side of the desk. There is also some hairline separation to the seat of the chair at the back. Unsure if the height adjustment is functional- it has been many years since it was used and may need some TLC. Otherwise no damage or repairs. The desk top is 24" long and 18" wide and at its pictured height the desk stands 29" tall. The chair is 16" wide and has a seat that is 13 1/4" deep. It stands 30" tall at its current height. This is one really cool piece of history! There are ink wells and pencil cutouts for seven people/employees. It is straight on one side and curved on the other side. See the pics as to how I squared it up on a trailer to best show the curvature. It is 138" long by 88" on the curved side. I am not certain if this was used as a school desk. Set of 2 antique wrought iron and wood children's school desks. These desk's are not hooked together. But they are identical to each other. The first photo shows the desk on the left has a seat that is a wobbly and out of line with the backing of the seat. see photo) The desk tops do not open up. There are some marks, scratches and wear and tear on both of the desk's. These were purchased at an estate sale and are sold as is. Each desk measures about 30 inches tall, about 30 inches from open front seat to the back of the desk, and about 23 inches from left to right seat. Pencil trays and cubby holes, manufactured by the O&SF Company in Minneapolis, Minnesota sometime between the late 1800s/early 1900s. These solid built desks were meant to stand the test of time. The wood finish appears to be original and in good shape for its age. The cast iron base is ornate, but strong and heavy.
