It measures approx ... more13-5/8" long. 9-1/2" deep,and 3" high on the back section. The top lid folds down to reveal a writing surface, still has the old velvet, the ribbon is a recent replacement of course. Under this is a storage area for papers or documents. The top section folds up, for a storage area for pens, inkwells and accessories. I am not sure if this is Black Forest but it does have very nice hand carved designs- the top panel has leaves.Vines,and either berries or grapes. The back portion is hinged and lifts up to reveal an area for pens and possibly for inkwells or whatever. The front is also hinged and folds down to make into a writing surface,under this is storage for paper and such. View the pics for making your own condition assessments. It is in very good shape. Some normal wear as one would expect from an item of its type and age. There is one small area of imperfection- located on the hinge area, noticed in pics 7& 8. There is a small piece broken out in this area. Being ultra fussy there is also a small worn wood section, on the front lower right corner area. Other than this its in excellent shape. Some wood missing off back and one of the Velvet lined covers has come detached from metal bracket. Couple of pieces of Mother of pearl inlay is missing but could be replaced. It does have key and does lock. Also the ink jar, wax sticks and instrument to hold them Also one piece of vintage paper seal. There are three Wood pieces. One to cover compartment and one longer piece that slides into an compartment. I do not know what the longer piece is used for but obviously it belongs with it. I purchased this desk at an estate sale and I didn't clean it and the trinkets that are inside of it will be included. If I were to keep the desk I would probably repair some of the pieces of wood in the inside to make the seems tighter but otherwise it opens and closes fine. Antique Brass Inlaid Mahogany Lap Desk w/ Secret Compartment. Keys included. Ink well lids appear to be silver or silver plate but are unmarked. This lap desk was reportedly property from the estate of Ambassador George C. McGhee(1912-2005) McGhee was Ambassador to Turkey during 1951-1953. Prior to this he served as Chairman of the Interim Greek-Turkish Assistance Committee in1947. And was appointed Assistant Secretary of State for the Near East, South Asia and Africa(included Turkey) in 1949. Later he served as the U. S. Ambassador to Germany, 1963-1968. Measurements Top: 20 inches long by 10 5/8 inches deep by 8 inches tall Weight approx. 20 lbs. Condition The scrolling brass inset decoration lifting in places and the wood ground splitting and with losses; lacking elements; the larger portion of the writing slant. I am listing this antique wooden lap desk in what appears to me to be a mahogany finish. It measures 11-1/2" x 8" x 4-1/2" Has a blue felt writing surface; compartments for stationary, stamps and pens with a removable cover(photo 7) two inkwell compartments although it only comes with one inkwell that is in great shape with no cracks or chips, and in the inkwell is a Bailey& Noyes pen nib extra fine(photo 8) The delicate brass key in a Quatrefoil pattern works well(photo 10) Left turn to lock, right turn to open. The bottom has the name L.E. Abbott written on it in pencil, and the initials are also in one of the desk flaps. There is one dented area approx. 2" from the left front corner along the rim of the bottom section where it closes(photo 1, note it is barely visible) The top finish is in rough condition with some ... moresmall paint splatters(photo 11) and a 2-1/2" rough area in the back right corner of the top(photo 12) Still a lovely antique piece to be delicately cleaned or fully refurbished. Found in attic was told this is a field lap drafting table. You decide if that's what is called. The picture of the instructions is on the inner tray. I took a picture of it and then slid it back inside. See picture with it back in its spot. Antique Travel Lap Desk with Ink Bottle, Pen, Ink Blotter
Antique travel lap desk in nice condition. It measures 12 1/4" x 9" Mahogany wood. Compartments for stationery, stamps pens etc with a removable cover. Brownish velvet writing top on inside with under compartment for storage. Inkwell with empty glass ink bottle in good condition and fountain pen with spare nib, 1 ink blotter pad. The base has a split but it is still solid construction. Top left hand side has some scratches. Nice old travel writing desk. No key. Condition is good for age. I cleaned this with Amish wood milk and it has come up very nice. Item will be carefully packaged for shipping. Antique Wooden Lap Desk with Brass Writing Surface, Inkwell, Quill Pen Holder
Antique wooden lap desk. Measures 17.5" x 13.25" at the base and 6.5" tall at the tallest point. There is a brass sheet attached to the top to make a smoother writing surface. The inkwell and pen holder are also brass. As are the posts that hold the wooden railing at the top in place. There are also two brass reinforcements, one on each of the back corners. I am unsure of the exact age of this desk. Condition is as seen in the photos. Scratches and dings in the wood. The brass writing surface is bowed up on one side. The nail holding one side of the railing in place is a little loose. But the railing seems secure(see second to last photo) Both the inkwell and the pen holder can spin freely in place, but I believe this is how they were designed. The quill pen seems to have a modern ink cartridge installed in it, but the cartridge ... moreis dried up and rusted on the tip, so it does not write.
