The front of the tray is a deep. Glossy black with washes of red and green. A lovely Japanese landscape scene is depicted on the face of the tray in brick red, vermillion, yellow ochre and gold, with multiple application techniques used in the gilding. The low, curved sides of the tray are painted green with a thin outline of black around the very edge. The tray measures approx. 18” x 13 ¾” and weighs 2 lbs. It is marked on the back: Made in Japan This piece is in very good antique condition with some minor age appropriate wear. The finish is shiny with very little lacquer loss. And the painted scene is crisp with only minor wear. The face of the tray does have some scratches/scuffs. Most are light, surface-only scratches and very minor, but there is one moderate scratch in the center which is a bit deeper and longer. On the outer edges of the tray there is moderate wear to the paint in the form of nicks, scuffs and shallow flaking. There is a cra ck on one inside wall of the tray(shown in p icture 10. Vintage Tole Tray c1920s Papier Paper Mache Florentine Gold Floral
My grandmother had these. She got them for her wedding in the 1920s. I learned, as a young girl trying to be helpful, that you never, ever washed them in a sink filled with warm soapy water. Boy, did I learn. This tray. While not my grandmother's, appears to be of the same vintage. It's in relatively good shape with a small dark mark on the front(see photo number 4) a space on a corner where someone used a gold enamel pen to try to fill in some missing design, and a crack on the back measuring approximately one inch long. The crack does not go through to the front. Some of the edges show some chipping as well although they aren't visible until you are actually holding the tray. In all this is a great representation of tole trays from that era and in good shape considering its age. The paper is in a typical Florentine design. c 1850 Victorian Paper Mache Domed Box ~ Tea Caddy w/ Inlaid Mother of Pearl Circa 1850 Victorian Era Paper Mache Domed Lid Box ~ Tea Caddy with Exquisite Mother of Pearl Inlay and Gold Gilt Decorated Accents. It measures approximately 12 1/2" x 9 1/2" wide and 5 3/4" high to the top of the lid. Condition: Condition is good but not perfect. For accuracy purposes- there are two chips along scallop rim located underneath the box. Shown in the photos this does not detract from the beauty, you cannot detect unless you turn the box updown to view. The lid has two areas of roughness from wear along the scallop rim along the backside, this also does not detract at all. The ebony lacquered surface shows correct, age commensurate crazing and light wear. On one hinge the screws have been stripped at some point in time causing the box ... morenot to align correctly when closed as viewed from the backside, the front does line up. The hinges are still functional as is or you can chose to repair. The interior is very clean. A true gem of a piece! This beautiful box is all hand painted with flowers. Gilt accents and inlaid mother of pearl. Beautiful original paint, hand painted gold gilt and inlaid mother of pearl decoration. The box has a lock but no key and it is missing the top portion of the hasp. The underside shows age appropriate wear with minor losses, as shown in the photos. Some areas of paint loss commensurate with age. Condition is good for age. Over 160 years old. Pair Chinoiserie Papier Mache Lacquered Japanese Style Wall Shelfs
This auction is for a pair of old papier mache lacquer wall shelfs. They are not marked. We are guessing they were made in Europe some time in the late 19th or early 20th century. They are finished to look like tortoise shell. They are in three pieces; the backboards that have partially raised or embossed. Gold and silver painted Japanese style scenes, hinged plain shelves with gold trim around the edge and and the simple hinged decorated supports. The supports are held by two little sleeves that slide over two bent nails that were hammered through the backboards, and have hooks that latch into a loop under the shelf to hold it in place. The hinges and the other hardware looks to be made of brass and are darkened from age. They each have a braided rope to hang by that may or may not be original to them. The backboards measure approx. 11" ... morex 8" x 1/8" The shelfs measure approx. 8" x 5" x 1/8" They are in relatively good condition. There are some small chips to the lacquered surface and they do show light scratches. Scrapes, and overall wear. Also, the nails holding the supports are a little loose and one of the sleeves at the back of one support has a tiny crack in it. Besides that they are in very good vintage, used condition. Antique Victorian English Papier Mache Folding Shelf Bird 19th C Paper Mache Art
This is a wonderful. Very old paper mache folding shelf. It folds flat for easy mailing and storage. Width 7" x height 4 3/4" x depth 3 1/2" There are two holes on back piece to mount on the wall. The center piece is hinged and comes out; the shelf lays on top of that and is attached with a hook/eye. This one has one bird on the left side and numerous daisies and blue flowers on the back side and also both sides of the center piece. It is in excellent condition. The bird and flowers look perfect. There are a few marks where the shelf comes down on the center piece and the underside of the hardware spots. As you might expect. Please take a careful look at the photos. Very colorful and detailed with gold motifs/ leaves. It box has a black lacquered interior and base. 2 1/8 inches diameter. 1 3/16 inches in height having a domed top. In excellent vintage condition.
