Vintage signed Mary Ryan toleware painted small oval metal basket; floral motif
This is a once- treasured vintage. Signed"Mary Ryan" small oval metal tole painted basket with two flowers- yellow/gold and pink/rose- and leaves in the front. The colors change in tone with the light. The first picture is most true to color, although it is a bit faded by bright light. The basket is 7-inches long by 4 3/4-inches high, by 4 1/4-inches deep in the middle. It has gold gilt trim on the top and bottom edges, and a gold stamp on the bottom. The stamp is worn, but"Mary Ryan" can be read. The four rounded protruding"feet" on the bottom have wear to the paint. There is a 2 3/4-inch long scratch line on the lower back, some small areas of black paint penetration,some loss of color on the gold gilt trim, especially on the bottom rim, some wear on the bottom inside and a 1/2-inch long scratch along the edge ... moreof one petal on the rose. To me, the basket has charm. Please look at the photos to judge for yourself its condition.

The gold trim on the edges has some nicks but over all the tray is in good condition. There Isn't any rust or major scratches. There isn't a makers mark. You are admiring a vintage hand-painted floral toleware silent butler/crumb catcher in black metal(tin) It is in amazingly good condition and shows only minor wear to the bottom. This silent butler is oval in shape. It measures 7.25" long. 4.75" wide and 2.50" deep. I did not imclude the handle in the measurements. Toleware was popular in US kitchens in the 18th and 19th centuries. The trade began in Europe in the first half of the 18th century, a little later in the United States, and had all but ceased by the end of the 19th century. A silent butler is a receptacle with hinged lid for collecting table crumbs and the contents of ashtrays. The first known use of a silent butler was 1937. Please ask any questions you may have. This is a very special piece of tin/tole ware. It is exceptionally well made with great details. It has a beautiful swing handle which is padded on the underside. For the comfort of the carrier, so It was designed to carry a pretty heavy load. I'm not sure if it was a very fancy lunch pail. Or a shopping pail to take to the general store or what. but it's the nicest pail I have ever seen. The lid fits inside very snuggly and the handle swings easily but does stay upright for display. Large and just Gorgeous English Hand Painted Tole Art Tray. Measures 20" Length(w/handles 21"1/2) X 14" Width. They tray has the open cut design surrounding the sides. The Hand Painted Flowers are simply beautiful by the artist hand. The Artist Signature is right lower left below painting. The colors and details used in this piece is incredible. It is a true original and most impressive. Rare find with handles! Backside shows blemish(see photo) NO Dents or Dings present. Front side is in good condition. Measures approx 10" x 9" Has lovely border on the interior and a narrow continuous wave and dot border on the upper edge of the outside. Naive painting probably home done. Please see pics.
