An attractive 6 inch square Victorian moulded tile with a flowerhead and foliage design in low relief. The tile has a few tiny edge and corner chips but it is generally in good condition. The reverse has a hand painted number but no other identification marks.

Up for auction is an Art Nouveau moulded tile maker unknown. The tile measures approx 6 inches(15 ms) square. And just under 1/2 an inch deep. This tile has a fabulous large central image depicting a stylised flower(possibly a rose in bud) with associated foliage the latter arranged in beautiful sinuous shapes so typical of the art nouveau period. This magnificent tile was made by Maw and Co. Benthall Works, Broseley,Shropshire around 1875. It is part of a series of 6 tiles based on scenes from the poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow `The hanging of the Crane` which was written in 1874.The tile is moulded in very high relief and has a rich majolica glaze. It is 6 inches square and has the Maws factory marks on the back.This tile is 0.5 inches thick and is much heavier than usual.

2" Antique MINTON HOLLINS& CO Fireplace Relief Tile 1860-1890 Victorian Moulded This is a lovely little tile from Minton. Hollins& Co. Circa 1860s-1890s. It is a brown relief tile from a fireplace. It features a pretty pinecone-like design. This tile bears an impressed circular insignia on reverse: MINTON, HOLLINS& Co. Inside of the circle is the number 2I2 with EB beneath. There is a P outside the circle on the right bottom corner and a X sign in the lower left corner. In 1845. Herbert Minton took Michael Daintry Hollins into partnership. And the tile-making side of the business became known as Minton Hollins& Co. Herbert Minton's successful experiments in making encaustic tiles during the 1840s( Encaustic tiles are ceramic tiles with a decoration made of different colours of clay inlaid into the surface. A method ... moreoriginally produced in the middle ages) this had put him at the forefront of a huge industry supplying the requirments of institutions, churches, and domestic interiors all over the world. SUPERB WEDGWOOD `SCROLLS` TILE -MAJOLICA GLAZE MOULDED IN VERY HIGH RELIEF
This unusual tile was made by the Wedgood factory. Etruria, Stoke on Trent around 1900.It is slip moulded in very high relief with a pattern of scrolls and stylized Fleur de Lys. There is a large central circular boss. The tile is coloured with rich majolica glaze in shades of rich browns some parts are slightly irridized. The tile is 6 inches square and the central boss stands 1 inch tall.The back has impressed Wedgwood and TXO(see picture#2) The tile is in excellent condition.

It has a relief'tube lined' outline around the flower pattern. The background is blue with the centre panels filled with green and the flower head is blood red. The back has a single"S" to one corner and"England" embossed in the centre of the grip lines and a design/pattern number in blue. The back is clear of adhesive. I'm not sure of the manufacturer- it has a grip pattern reminiscent of Corn Bros. However, with the embossed"S" I'm not sure this is correct. Condition/ Defects: The tile is in very good condition; it has some crazing in the glaze. Eight ... moresmall chips around the edges and a couple of flea bites. UNUSUAL MINTON HOLLINS `INTAGLIO AND MOULDED `CLASSICAL` TILE
This is an unusual tile made by the Minton Hollins factory. Stoke on Trent around 1880. The pattern uses two methods of decoration. The central green rosette is moulded and the swags and flowers on each side are `intaglio` ie impressed. The tile is 6 inches square and in good condition. The Minton Hollins marks are on the back.

T A SIMPSON MOULDED MAJOLICA GLAZE TILE `PALM FRONDS`
This moulded majolica glazed tile was made by T.A.Simpson. Hanley, Stoke on Trent around 1885. It shows what appears to be stylized palm fronds. It is coloured with yellow green and brown glazes. The tile is 6 inches square. There is a chip on the bottom left corner and overall light crazing. However, this is a scarce tile made by a manufacturer in business for only a couple of years.

GIBBONS HINTON RELIEF & INTAGLIO MOULDED MAJOLICA GLAZE `SAILING SHIP` TILE
This unusual tile was made by Gibbons Hinton. Brierley Hill, Stourbridge around 1900. It is moulded in low relief and intaglio with a picture of a sailing boat on a narrow lake or fiord. The tile was possibly designed by Owen Gibbons and is their patent `Chromo-Relievo` dust pressed tile. The picture is coloured with rich majolica glazes. It is 6 inches square and in good condition. An example of this tile is illustrated in The auction catalogue for The Sheila Hughes Tile Collection, January 2008 conducted by Fieldings Auctioneers, Stourbridge, page 29 number 248.The back of the tile is shown in picture#2.

Measuring 6" x 6" this Beautiful tile was designed by CP Sutcliffe- a company which designed tiles at their Broughton factory between 1895 and 1901 for Maw& Co! Terrific tile MOULDED GIRLS HEAD by DUNNILL 1900's
Yet another unusual must have for you tile lovers out there! 6" ART NOUVEAU tile depicting a beautiful HEAD OF A YOUNG GIRL. With BACKGROUND OF SMALL POPPIES. Could she be NIGHT? I have listed her PARTNER TILE separately. Wonderful moulding varying in depth and covered in gorgeous green glaze. Designed, and manufactured by CRAVEN DUNNILL and not a head I have seen before. It is quite stunning. The reverse is fully marked with the factory logo and name.I would not normally describe a head as art nouveau as they are usually very classical in style, but these have quite a different feel to them. Condition is wonderful. Very light small surface scratches that only show if held at an angle in bright light and the smallest rub to a tiny piece of her hair but nothing to worry about. She is a stunner! No chips. Rubs, or cracks. Crazing commensurate ... morewith age. Glorious shiney bright surface glaze. Quite simply a great design that would look wonderful in any collection of tiles especially for collectors of HEADS and MOULDED DESIGNS or simply framed on its own as a BRITISH DECORATIVE ARTS object.
