Disciple, circa 1600-1700's Santos This auction ... moreis for a carving that I bought from an estate in Switzerland. It shows a man with long hair and beard in a long fluted robe with a sash across his left shoulder. In the left hand. He is holding a book and in the right hand, either he has his hand folded under or the fingers are missing. I was told by an art expert that this is most likely a disciple because his head is turned sideways as if he were to be looking at Jesus. I don't know if it could be St. Peter or which one would be associated holding a book. When I bought this statue, it was not mounted but we had it mounted on this wooden platform. It could be just as easily removed if so desired. The color of the wood is a rich blackish brown with a very old aged patina. With the platform, he stands 14.25" high and without the platform, he stands 13.25" high and is 5" wide and 2" deep and he is flat on the back and there is a hole in the middle which makes me think that he was attached to a larger tableau- possibly in a church. It looks like she originally held a staff, but it was not there when I purchased him. I bought him on eBay from some sellers in the Philippines. This was approximately 7 years ago. I have quite a bit of these items, but after collecting and displaying them for 30+ years, I am ready for something else. The clothing under the robe is blue. Some gold remains. Please see the details above on the condition. When I first bought him you could not see the colors. He was very dark from years of display. I washed him some. And the colors really popped. I am not quite sure who the Santos depicts but it is a man in a crown like hat who is wearing a long coat. The entire saint is gilt and the base is black with gold gilt highlights. This piece measures 3 1/2" in width. 2" in depth, and stands 5 5/8" in height. This piece is in great condition with only one small break to his left thumb and a small piece of gilding is missing to the bottom of his long coat. Antique wood Carved Santos with Niche
Beautiful Santos in niche. The saint and niche are made of wood. This is a very old piece and not cobbled together to appear old. The niche is hand made with hand cut dovetails. The wood appears to be pine and is very old and wormy. There is damage to the bottom front as shown in the photo.Inside the niche there is applied paper and silver stars. The saint is hand carved from some soft wood I cannot say. The niche measures appox 8" x 11" x 3" A pane of glass may have been present at some time but has long since disappeared. Wood Carving Santos or Retablo of Archangel Angel Michael from Guatemala
This is a hand carved art piece made from solid wood and painted by Quiche Mayan Indian artisans living in the highlands of Guatemala. It has gone through an elaborate antiquing process to seal and darken the wood and to make it appear as though it is truly an antique. It is a beautiful piece that resembles an angel. Perhaps the Archangel Michael. He holds a spear in one hand. Both hands and both wings are separate pieces and come out of their holes, and the spear itself is also a separate piece. He stands, with the base, at an impressive 24.5" tall.

Estate Find: Antique Vintage Statue/Santos of Mary holding Jesus. 19" tall total. This is a beautiful statue with very nice details. It has a wood base.crack in wood. I am not sure what they are made of. The faces are hand painted and look to have glass eyes. They have eye lashes and the hair looks real. Not sure of age. But older. Gold robes with metal crows. Some paint loss. Body under robe is a straight piece of wood. So face and hands may be wood also but I'm not sure. Mary's crown is loose and needs to be stitched back on. The back is flat. Looks like it's been kept in a box. Nice older statue! Happy to answer any?

EARLY 18th C. ANTIQUE MADONNA SANTOS VIRGIN MARY CARVED WOOD RELIGIOUS STATUE
Just acquired out of a wonderful Midwest Private estate we are able to offer this late 16th to early 17th century fabulous ~ MADONNA SANTOS IN HER ORIGINAL WOOD BOX CASE ~. This is an extremely early piece and quite exceptional as you will see. I would imagine that she is probably one of the finest examples around and should most likely be in a museum. Her original wood box case measures 14 1/2 inches tall by 11 1/2 inches wide by 8 1/2 inches deep. Madonna measures 11 3/4 inches tall. The over all condition is actually pretty decent for a 300 or so year old Santos. She has had some repairs and there is some expected damage as well. Her clothing has many tears and some deterioration. It looks like one section on her right arm may be newer fabric or a repair. It appears that the metal thread trim may be gold. Although we did not test it. The ... moresilver crown is bent some and has a pretty poor wood rod repair on the inside that fits in her head" fairly easy fix" I also see that there is some expected damage to the wood box and there may have been a piece of wood or something on the top originally. I also see that the wood base she is on, under her clothes, looks to have had a few repairs as well. I believe that the majority of her clothing is original" which is quite amazing" Her hands and face are very well preserved. She displays wonderfully and would make a fine addition to any serious collection. Please understand we are selling her as found, because she is such an early example she is not perfect by any stretch but certainly quite amazing. Antique Santo Santos Wood Carving St. Saint Francis with Birds Philippines ?
A most attractive and inspiring statue of the Catholic Saint- St. Francis. Although I am a Scottish Presbyterian. Being an animal lover, I have a very soft spot in my heart for St. Francis! This carving has great detail and I love the tender expression on the face of St. Francis, as he looks down at the bird on his hand. Another bird perches on his arm. There is a third bird at his feet. A cross hands around his waist and he wears a hooded robe. He has the tonsured head, showing devotion and humility. In very good used condition. It was his son Neftali who introduced Jose Negron to the art of carving santos and would prepare blocks of wood by drawing the silhouettes of figures for his father to carve. His santos have won many prizes and are part of the collections of the Museo de Arte de Ponce and the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture in San Juan. Jose Negron taught his nephew and two grand nieces how to carve. In 1996 the Bacardi Festival was dedicated to him and he won first price in the carving of Saint Anthony. In 1997 he obtained second prize on the carving of Juan Alejo de Arizmendi, in 1998 he obtained third prize in th el Cuarto Certamen de la Talla de San Juan Bautista. In 2005 he was recognized as a master carver by the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Jose Negron passed away in 2009. This Santo is hand carved from cedar wood and polychrome painted by Jose L. Negron. He has some right hand finger damage and was, I think, holding something in his left hand- also some chipping to paint and gilding. Antique Hand Carved Wood Virgin Mary European 17th Century This is a very interesting sculpture. She is completely carved of wood. I am not sure of what kind wood. She has tiny iron pins that perhaps held an infant or sacred heart. It is from Europe and is part of a religious collection I purchased recently. The former owner acquired very rare and interesting religious artifacts over many years. Please check my other listings as this was a wonderful and rare find. This statue is not without issues. I t is missing arms. Has cracks and chipping but is beautifully carved. She has interesting hair, large eyes and there are lovely folds carved into the wood for the cape. At one point she might have held the infant Jesus or perhaps there was a sacred heart across her chest. But we will never know. there are tiny pins where her arms used to attach ... moreas well as at the top of her chest. There are also come pins in the bottom as most likely she was attached to a base. This is a large antique Santos measuring 20 inches tall with polychrome paint. Estimated age is 19th century or earlier and believed to be from Latin America. Possibly representing Saint Anthony. The figure is dressed in a blue robe elaborately decorated in white, gold and red, completed with red shoes. There is paint flaking due to age and the hands are partially intact. There is a piece of metal nailed to the head. The figure is structurally sound with no repairs apparent, there is minor splitting in the wood on the base. The weight of the figure is 4 1/2 lbs. The base measures 6 1/2" x 4 1/2" with rings evident in the unpainted wood underneath. Please inspect all photos as they are part of the description. This large solid wood carving depicts the Madonna and Child. It is a very rare due to the carving being made from the heartwood of the tree. The two figures are carved in the same style. Of Spanish origin. The Madonna is wearing a crown, sitting with the child in her left hand. She holds the world in her right hand. Like most Santos figurines, the artist is unknown. On the back. There are holes where the piece had been mounted in a Spanish church or religious setting. Although the date of creation is unknown, the appraiser told me the style and condition of the piece suggest it was made in the mid to late 1800's, very possibly earlier. Has some gold gilt coloring over the wood which may have been added later. Overall it is in good condition besides the splits and chips in the carving from age. It is a Indo-Portuguese work- meaning that it was made in Goa, India, when Goa was a Portuguese colony so following the Portuguese art style but also with Indian influence since most of the artists were Indian.
