Wonderful hand carved santo figure from Central America or Mexico. Circa 1950. Statue measures 12 1/4" tall and 5" wide at the broadest part of the wings. This is a carving of St. Rafael. Antique San Jose Saint Joseph holding Baby Jesus Santo Nearly 3 ft Mexican
19th c San Jose Santo holding Baby Jesus. Overall height is approx 35 inches. 31 inches without halo(separate piece) and pedestal. Jesus infant has glass eyes and real lashes. The body of Joseph and the Baby are primitive in comparison to the heads and hands of each figure- this large church piece may have had two carvers. The staff is a contemporary addition for display purposes- the original is missing. Halo attaches to 2 holes in Saints neck. And he stands on a wood pedestal by means of pegs. Figures would have been robed, so the bodies were not considered as important as the faces.

Outstanding 15th/16th Century Spanish Carved Wood Santo Sculpture Saint Francis
Superb Late 15th to 16th Century Altar Fragment Entirely hand carved in wood. We can tell it's an altar fragment from the base and side where the Saint Francis must have been attached to a monumental tableau. We purchased him as Spanish. But the work is very, very reminiscent of what was popular in Germany during the period. As you can see from the Creglingen Altar below. He has some old wood-worm damage. But apart from that he's solid and stands up perfectly well. The face is magnificently carved. The piece just screams quality. He measures a whopping 103 cm tall(41 inches) Free shipping at the buy-it-now price. Beautiful hand carved Saint Wendelin. From the Philippines. Glass eyes and good paint, which has the chalky appearance of age. Reproduction. 14 1/4" tall and 5 1/4" wide. This beautiful piece will be a great addition to your collection. He is holding a lamb. Th ere is very little definite information about this saint. His earliest biographies(two in Latin and two in German) Did not appear until after 1417. The name"Wendelin" means"wanderer" or"pilgrim" in Old High German. The story as told there is that Wendelin was the son of a Scottish king. After a piously spent youth he secretly left his home on a pilgrimage to Rome. On his way back he settled as a hermit at Westrich in the Diocese of Trier. When a wealthy landowner criticized him for his idle life he entered his service as a herdsman. But later ... morea miracle obliged the landowner to allow him to return to his solitude. Wendelin then established a company of hermits from which sprang the Benedictine Abbey of Tholey in Saarland. He was consecrated abbot about 597. According to the later legends, while Tholey was apparently founded as a collegiate body about 630. It is difficult to say how far the later biographers are trustworthy. This piece was made in the style of antique Santos. Which were common in homes and local shrines. His master saw an angel ploughing on either side of him, so that Isidore's work was equal to that of three of his fellow labourers. The top portion of the spear broke off, but can easily be glued back in place. It has a crack on the bottom center of the base. This carving has great detail and I love the tender expression on the face of St. Francis, as he looks down at the bird on his hand. Another bird perches on his arm. There is a third bird at his feet. A cross hands around his waist and he wears a hooded robe. He has the tonsured head, showing devotion and humility. In very good used condition. Huge 29" Vintage Mexican Wood Santo Ex Voto African Saint Martin de Porres
This is a huge. Heavy(nearly 40 pound) carved wood Santo which was hand-carved in Mexico. It depicts St. Martin de Porres, a mulatto, who is considered the patron saint of mixed-race people and inter-racial harmony. The piece is created from very heavy, hard, mesquite wood. There is a beautiful line of tin milagros(miracle) ex voto(offerings) meticulously nailed on the base front. The saint is depicted as a young mulatto friar, wearing the old habit of the Dominican lay brother. His cloak is foil/tin wrapped with gold and black highlights. Depicted holding his traditional broom and rosary, the broom representing his belief that work was sacred now matter how menial. It measures 29" tall by 14" and 10" deep. This was a vintage piece that was brought to me by a Mexican National from San Miguel de Allende Mexico. An AMAZING art ... morepiece for the collector. It is in very good condition with no issues other than there may have been something small in his folded hands at one point. That is no longer there. I cannot tell from looking down into the recessed palm, if it is just a little rough on the carving or if something used to be there- perhaps a small crucifix cross, with which he is often depicted. It does not affect the overall look of the piece. History of St. Martin de Porres(1579- 1639) He was a lay brother of the Dominican order. Beatified in 1837 by Pope Gregory XVI and canonized in 1962 by Pope John XXIII. He is considered the patron saint of mixed-race people and those seeking inter-racial harmony. Hand carved Cedar Saint Francis by Johnny Garcia of Taos 6 inches high. 2 inches wide, 1 5/8 inches deep. Saint Jude is a brother of Saint James and therefore possibly of Jesus as well. Saint Jude was one of the twelve Apostles. Legend has him preaching in Mesopotamia and being martyred in Persia. Little else seems to be known concerning this rather shadowy Saint who was for a long time ignored in the prayers of the faithful- possibly because he bore the same name as Judas. His feast day is October 28. Saint Jude is dressed in a long robe with a holy medal often a huge one one his chest. A flame of enlightenment springs from his forehead. He is shown with an oar. Because he was a fisherman. He is famous nowadays as the patron of desperate situations and impossible causes and as such he has become very popular.

Recently returned from a 2-month trip to Peru. I was there working on a photography project and met incredible people. The trip was expensive for me and so I thought I would bring back some unique items that I was lucky to find during my Peruvian journey in order to help fund the continuation of the project. I paid a fair amount of money for these objects and am selling them for a slight profit. This item up for auction came from a crumbling home in Lima. The house belonged to a dealer of artifacts: mainly pre-Colombian items. Inca and pre-Inca relics, as well as art from Cusco. The man died many years ago, but his son befriended me and gave me access to the house. It was a thrill to go through the home and find fragments of objects. He was happy to sell me anything I wanted in order to fund the repairs that the house needed, which were extensive. ... moreThis pair of legs belonged to a Santo of some sort. Most likely from Northern Peru. But possibly from Cuzco. The man said his best guess was that it was a figure of a Christ child. The legs are attached at the heel by a piece of metal… Probably iron… and it’s really rusty. The legs are wooden, hand-carved, and the paint has virtually all flaked off.
