SIZE: Length: 6mm. Width: 5mm. Depth: 2mm. All measurements approximate. WEIGHT: 0.56 carats. NOTES: Upon request we can set your gemstones as a ring. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: Tourmaline occurred in many of the ancient mines that yielded precious gemstones in the ancient Roman world 2.000 years ago, however it was mistaken for(and thus called) emerald or topaz. The name“tourmaline” came from the Celanese word"turmali, which means"mixed" Bright rainbow collections of gemstone varieties were called"turmali" parcels. Here's a very vibrantly hued, almost"neon" pink hand crafted ... moretourmaline cabochon round from the Southern Urals of Russia. Hand crafted by an 18th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. Originally used in indigenous jewelry, this is a very beautiful and valuable semi-precious gemstone. Pink tourmaline is rather uncommon, probably the most valuable of the ordinary varieties of tourmaline. There is substantially more demand than supply, so thus oftentimes can be quite costly. The color of this specimen is a very rich and saturated, almost"neon" pink. Pink tourmaline was held in such high regard by the(last) Empress of China, Tz'u Hsi, that she purchased bought almost a ton of it from a mine in California, and was eventually laid to rest(eternally) on a carved tourmaline pillow. In fact, many of the Russian crown jewels are tourmaline. In the Victorian Age tourmaline was enormously popular not only in Russia, but throughout 18th and 19th century Europe. However much favored tourmaline was by European Renaissance and Victorian Royalty. Tourmaline tends to be characterized by the presence of small

The Greeks and Romans used citrine for intaglios and in jewelry as well during the first and second centuries. And believed that citrine was the crystallized essence of sunshine. Citrine was also believed to aid in digestion and cleanse toxins from the body, and it was even carried as protection against snake venom. The gemstone was regarded as sacred to the healing deities Apollo(God of Health) and his son, Aesclepius(God of Healing) Since trade in the first centuries AD was brisk between the Romans and India, it's very likely that the Romans got their stones from southern India, an area not only rich in gems but also a major bead lapidary center. Here’s a large, very clean, golden yellow oval citrine which originated in the Devonian lava beds found along the coast of Angus Country, Scotland. The gemstone was hand crafted and finished by an eighteenth century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval,

Hand crafted by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, ... moreRenaissance, and Victorian Russia. Originally used in indigenous jewelry, this is a very pretty precious gemstone. The color is a very beautiful pastel“aquamarine blue” with brilliant platinum blue-green flashes. Under intense while light the color will shift to a lilac or violet shade, depending upon the intensity and color of the light source. The color is quite exquisite with intense flash, diamond-like in its brilliance. It’s a real sparkler, and blue sapphire is definitely much in demand. The gemstone is to the eye. Virtually flawless. Even in these photo enlargements here(500% it is impossible to discern any blemishes. This is really an exceptional precious gemstone– the color and quality both fabulous! High quality blue sapphires such as these are increasingly difficult to acquire at anything approaching a reasonable price. Unfortunately most seemingly flawless, transparent“sapphires” sold even by the largest and most reputable retailers in the United States are synthetic(read the fine print; and the same is true of emeralds and rubies) However the Southern Ural Mountains of Russia have been producing good quality, natural sapphires for centuries. Two Antique 1920's Rare Genuine Black"Lightening Ridge" Australian Opal Oval Semi-Precious Gemstones! ORIGIN: Lightening Ridge. New South Wales, Australia. Early 20th Century. SIZE: Length: 7mm. Width: 5mm. All measurements approximate. WEIGHT: 0.92 carats(the pair) NOTES: Upon request we can set your gemstones as a ring. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: In ancient times opal was included among the noble gems and was ranked second only to emerald by the Romans. Who sometimes referred to opal as the"cupid stone" they also considered to be a token of hope and purity. Mark Antony loved opal. Indeed, it is said that he so coveted an opal owned by Roman Senator Nonius that Mark Antony banished the Senator after he refused to sell the almond sized stone. Legend states that one Roman Emperor offered ... moreto trade one-third of his vast kingdom for a single opal. The Romans used opal both for jewelry and in the production of cameos. Worn as a talisman, the Romans believed that opal had to power to cure disease, and also considered opal to be a token of hope and purity. The Roman scholar and historian Pliny(23-79 A.D. in his 37-volume work, Historia Naturalis" described opal as having"the fire of the garnet, the brilliant purple of the amethyst, and the sea-green of the emerald all shining together in incredible union" Here are two absolutely gorgeous. Natural"black" opals from Australia originally produced in the 1920's. These are very uncommon gemstones, difficult to procure. The world's entire production of gemstone quality black opal comes from one claim in Australia known as"Lightening Ridge" These two gemstones were originally solid black opal, however they were so thin that a backing was added so as to strengthen the gemstone and reduce its fragility. For those unfamiliar with black opal, it is somewhat akin to, if you will image, black abalone mother of pearl- which is to say, mother of pearl with a black background. Even witho

The emeralds from ancient Egypt’s(recently rediscovered) mines, which had actively ... moreproduced emerald since 2,000 B.C. The Greeks regarded the emerald as the sacred stone of the goddess Aphrodite(Venus to the Romans) and of the Earth Goddess. As well, the last ruler of the Greek Ptolemaic Dynasty in Egypt, Cleopatra VII, Queen of Egypt, was often depicted and described wearing fabulous emeralds mined from those same famous ancient mines. Here's a very pretty, delicately colored natural mint green emerald precious gemstone from the Southern Urals of(Siberia) Russia. The gemstone was hand crafted and faceted by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. To casual scrutiny, the gemstone is transparent, and near eye clean. However there are quite a few wispy colorless crystalline blemishes which while not individually visible except upon very close examination, nonetheless makes the gemstone less than eye clean. This is a common affliction of emerald. These blemishes would be much less noticeable once the gemstone was set, and unless someone puts their nose to the stone, they are not immediately apparent. Orange sapphires are amongst the most rare of all colored sapphires, and this particular specimen is very beautiful. The gemstone is to the casual admirer transparent and clean. It is absolutely transparent. However if you look very closely, a sprinkling of minute, colorless pin-prick sized spicules are visible to the naked eye. This particular specimen is a beautiful violet color with blue undertones– depending on whether the light is white(outdoors) or yellow, it will vary between violet and violet-blue in color. It is quite striking, very handsome and gentle in tone, the color very soft and understated, the star quite beautiful. The gemstone was hand shaped ... moreand polished into this very beautiful oval cabochon by a 19th century Russian artisan for use in domestic jewelry. The result is an exquisite and incredibly richly colored precious gemstone with lots of depth and gorgeous tone. It is not a flawless gemstone. Of course it is the alignment of included material which creates the star– so star sapphires always have included material. The question is, how noticeable? With this particular specimen to casual scrutiny it simply appears to be a beautiful, unblemished star sapphire. However close inspection will reveal a few variations in the tone and a few internal blemishes. Of course here in these photo enlargements these blemishes are quite obvious. But in hand, life-size, they simply are not discerned when casually viewed. It is only when you examine it very carefully that you will notice some color zoning and a minor flaw or two. Of course, the same can be said of most sapphires in general, and particularly star sapphires. Color zoning is quite common in sapphires, and unless very obvious, is generally not seriously detrimental. Known as a"star" sapphire because of an optical effect known as an"asterism" orie

Sapphires have been since ancient times one of the most highly valued of all gemstones, and references to the gemstone date back to about 800 B.C. Here's a gorgeous, vibrantly ... morecolored natural red-orange-pink sapphire precious gemstone from the Southern Ural Mountains of Siberia, Russia. The gemstone was hand crafted and faceted by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. The color is exceptional, a red-pink with orange/peach undertones. The color is popularly known as“padparadsha” red, and the intense, almost“neon” hue is very pretty. This precious gemstone is by and large transparent. However as you can see, it possesses a lot of thin, silk strand-like seams composed of colorless crystalline material. Once set into a ring or pendant this material would be considerably less noticeable. But as it is though to the cursory glance of the casual admirer the gemstone seems without blemish, close examination will clearly show this finely stranded colorless crystalline material. Even so blemished, it nonetheless possesses a highly desirable bright red-orange-pink color and vibrant. Of course most natural sapphire gemstones are anywhere from lightly to heavily blemished. Agate is probably named after its ancient source. The Achates River in Sicily, though some ancient historians believe that the word agate is derived from the Greek word"Agateес" meaning happy. ... moreA famous collection of four thousand agate bowls was accumulated by Mithradates, king of Pontus(an area along the Black Sea of present-day Turkey which was colonized by Hellenic Greeks) is illustrative of the high value the ancient world had for agate. Agate bowls were also popular in the Byzantine Empire, and vast collections of agate bowls became common among European royalty during the Renaissance. Hand-shaped into a tapered oblong and drilled for use as a pendant circa 1st century in the Roman Province of Thracia(present-day Bulgaria and Serbia) This piece is a genuine banded agate gemstone. It is in good condition, not cracked, chipped, broken or repaired. Of course, it was buried for almost two thousand years, so there are minor scratches and scuffs. Agate gemstones like this one were extremely popular throughout the Roman Empire and earlier the Greeks, Phoenicians, Sumerians and Egyptians fashioned adornments from agate. Archeology suggests that quartz agate was favored in this way as long as 10,000 years ago. Agates were formed millions of years ago when gas bubbles occurred in volcanic rocks or lava. Silica laden water seeped into the bubbles, coagulated into a gel a

DETAIL: This is a very handsome and very uncommon silver denarius produced in the city of Rome itself in 196 or 197 A.D. It is in very good condition. Only very modest wear from circulation in ancient Rome. It was well struck both front and back on a planchet(blank coin) which was just a little undersized(not at all uncommon) though the coin is of better than average weight for the era. The net result is that on both the obverse side of the coin a few of the Latin characters in the legend are slightly truncated(not missing, merely that a portion of the top of the letters are off the edge of the coin) and on the reverse side of the coin, the Latin characters making up the first half of the legend are severely truncated(in some cases almost entirely chopped off, struck off the edge of the flan. Naturally inasmuch as these coins were produced by hand. And it is the rule, not the exception, to find them struck off-center, on irregular, undersized planchets(blanks) and consequentially missing portions of the legends and/or themes(depictions) All of these characteristics

CONDITION: Very good. Completely intact, moderately light wear, very light porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. DETAIL: A substantial. Well constructed Roman bronze band with very masculine and handsome features. The construction is that of a simple band clearly cut from flat bronze stock, it has the look of hammered bronze. Obviously as you can see it is a little more than ... morea simple band, as it does incorporate a large oval bezel, all part of the same piece of bronze. It also features overlapping bands at the back, which at the time it was created would have formed an“adjustable” ring. However ancient metal tends to crystallize and become inflexible, and though the ring was“adjustable” when it was originally created, fifteen or sixteen centuries later the ring size is pretty much fixed, there’s little“flex” left in the bronze bands. Very simple. Rather uncommon to the time, the ring remains in very good condition. Rather than the more archaic style of producing band and bezel separately and then attaching them together, this ring is constructed of a single piece of bronze, albeit cut from flat, hammered bronze sheet rather than molded from molten bronze. In a way, this accentuates the ring’s timeless design and modern flavor. There are clear indications that the ring was worn during an ancient lifetime long past. However this should not be a source for disappointment. You must keep in mind that the ring was produced by an artisan and sold to a patron or consumer with the idea that the ring would be enjoyed and worn by the

In addition to the quite fancy six-sided bezel, you might notice that the perimeter of the bezel is accentuated with a punch-dot border as well. The punch-dot technique was already thousands of years old, used in Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Minoan Crete millennia earlier as a decorative element on items of personal adornment. The ring was not actually recovered with the gemstone intact, however usually this style of bronze ring was set either with a glass gemstone(glass was quite costly) or with some form of quartz crystal; i.e. clear quartz(rock crystal” orange quartz(carnelian” or purple quartz(amethyst” or oftentimes lapis lazuli. The construction is of the more archaic style, characteristically made in two pieces; an incomplete ring(a“shank” with a separately crafted bezel which was brazed to the shank in order to assemble the ring. This as opposed to the more modern style of construction prevalent in the following centuries whereby the bands and bezel are integrated(fashioned from a single piece of metal) The ring evidences light wear. Nothing particularly heavy, however the bands were mangled a bit due to the soil pressure exerted on the ring during the thousand years it was buried. If desired, the ring could be heated and the bands“tweaked” however generally it is better just to leave well enough alone. Though the bands are slightly misshapen, the ring“wears” quite nicely. Roman green glass unguent or oil bottle of fairly sizeable dimensions. Most Roman glass vessels recovered complete(intact or repairable) are between 1 ½ ... moreand 3 inches in size. These small jars, pitchers, unguentariums, jugs, bottles and flasks were used to contain aromatic oils, perfumes, medicinal ointments, and cosmetics. It is not to say that the Romans did not use larger pieces of glass on their tables such as bowls and cups; and even larger containers for transporting foodstuffs; because they did. In fact whatever the Romans had produced in clay in the first and second centuries B.C. was by the first and second centuries A.D. more commonly produced in glass. However the larger pieces of glass are rarely found intact. The Romans for instance produced fluted, engraved, multi-tiered, and cut glass bowls of fantastic quality and design– and only a few intact specimens have ever been recovered intact. In fact even the smaller pieces such as this are rarely recovered intact except as grave goods. This piece as you can see has a fairly well-formed and defined lip. And a neck beneath slightly tapered neck– overall a somewhat primitive specimen. Normally this would have been used to dispense aromatic oils or other unguents. Possessing a very pleasing green color, this bottle is probably amongst the earlier Roman

CONDITION: Excellent! Completely intact. Moderate wear consistent with use. Overall only moderately light porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) except for one“hot spot” corroded hole in band. Professionally conserved. DETAIL: An exceptionally heavy. Massively constructed, very well preserved bronze ring circa 4th century A.D. As you can see, the ... morering is very bold, handsome, and elegant in design. The"bezel" or face of the ring is engraved with a classical starburst design accentuated with hash marks on sculpted shouldered bands. Not a terribly uncommon theme for the time, but very well executed. Starburst themes of one variety or another were a very popular geometric design during the first few centuries A.D. This particular depiction is quite characteristic of the era except for rather uncommon crosshatched lines which connect the four arms of the starburst; forming a peripheral diamond border to the bezel’s circumference. All of the engraving exhibits very fine workmanship, and is mostly intact– though it is obvious that the ring was worn in life. The ring is very heavily constructed and weighs several times as much as most similar rings of the era. There is a very modest amount of wear evidenced. Though clearly it was worn in ancient times. The amount of wear is not excessive and is not discernible except upon close scrutiny. The extent of this wear is more evident on the bands than on the bezel. The ring possesses the gorgeous, medium tone so characteristic of ancient bronze. There

The Romans: An Introduction to Their History and Civilization by Karl Christ. Translated from the German by Christopher Holme. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 294 pages. Publisher: University of California; 1985) Roman civilization is one of the bases of the modern world. The extraordinary achievements of Rome- political. Military, cultural- and its dramatic, thousand-year history, during which it grew to dominate the whole world of classical antiquity before being overwhelmed in its turn, have been continuously studied and variously interpreted ever since. Rome has been commended for its administration, praised for its system of justice, admired for its arts and technology, extolled for its"virtues, such as love, freedom, independence, discipline, courage, and austerity. It has also been condemned for its aggression, its exploitation of slaves, ... moreits excesses, and the decadence that led to its decline. But such was Rome's impact, and so remarkable was the empire it built, that its influence has never ceased to be felt. Whether as a model of political power. Of moral behavior, or of social control, Rome, with its splendors and triumphs, its failings and disasters, is an inexhaustible quarry for the lessons that its history offers and the legacies that it has bequeathed. Karl Christ conveys the essence of this vital Roman tradition with a coherence and compact precision that few scholars, if any, have been able to achieve. Following the main chronological developments of Roman history, he combines the necessary minimum of political and military narrative with lucid social and economic analysis, separate chapters on Roman ways of life and law, and wide-ranging coverage of literature, art, science, technology, and religion. With maps and photographs as well as a specially prepared bibliography for further reading, The Romans" is the most up-to-date, authoritative and comprehensive single-volume introduction to the history and civilization of Ancient Rome. Publisher: Charles Scribner's Sons; 1955) This is the story of the vanished race which for nearly 400 years. Until the rise of Rome in the fifth century B.C. exercised power over Central Italy and the Mediterranean. Everything about the Etruscans is mysterious. The Romans, their successors in dominion over Italy, sought systematically to delete all trace of them from the face of the earth. Superficially the attempt almost succeeded, for it was not until two centuries ago that archaeology began effectively to restore the Etruscans to history. But in reality the attempt was always doomed to failure because, as this book sets out to show, the soil of ... moreEtruria was so steeped in the spirit of the Etruscans that their influence was never extinct or even dormant, least of all among their conquerors, the Romans themselves. Frau Sibylle von Cles-Reden. A trained archaeologist, describes the Etruscan sites and brings them back to life with the imagination of an artist. Each major site in turn: Caere, Vulci, Clusium, Volsinium and the rest, is seen to represent one or another of the major fields of Etruscan achievement: pottery or sculpture, painting or architecture, religion or the Etruscan way of life. Each leads her in turn to a fascinatingly discursive account of a different aspect of Etruscan history, in which her sensitive awareness of the continuity of the race and the timeless quality of their native landscape is matched by a large number of magnificent photographs. The Etruscan mystery has never been more sympathetically evoked, nor more nearly unraveled. CONDITION: Modestly used. Clean. Pages are unmarked, no notes or highlighting, unmutilated, remaining well bound. Cloth covers are clean. Dustjacket shows only modest edge and corner shelfwear, one small 3/4 inch edge tear(neatly mended) at the top edge of the front side,

Here's an exquisitely colored antique pink marquise cut faceted tourmaline ... morefrom the Southern Urals, hand faceted in the 19th century. Pink tourmalines are rather uncommon, probably the most valuable of the ordinary varieties of tourmaline. There is substantially more demand than supply, so thus oftentimes can be quite costly. The color of this specimen has been alternately described as hot pink, neon pink, bubble gum pink, even screaming pink. Let’s just say the color is very intense, and quite vibrant. Pink tourmaline was held in such high regard by the(last) Empress of China, Tz'u Hsi, that she purchased bought almost a ton of it from a mine in California, and was eventually laid to rest(eternally) on a carved tourmaline pillow. Much favored by European Renaissance and Victorian Royalty, tourmaline tends to be characterized by the presence of small colorless inclusions. This semi-precious gemstone does have several very minute inclusions which while not discernible to the eye. Can just be made out under a 5x glass. DVD Roman Emperor Constantine & The Cross Ancient Christianity Maxentius Milvian
Constantine and The Cross(1962) Starring: Cornel Wilde. Belinda Lee. Director: Lionello De Felice. DESCRIPTION: DVD: 120 minutes. The vast majority of this movie that centers on Constantine's personal life is pure fiction. However. That is not so bad; Gladiator" re-wrote history, too, but was nonetheless a great movie. And this movie does not fabricate history just to fabricate, but rather it does so with the objective of tying Constantine and Christianity together. One of the more notable scenes in which historical fact comes together with a fudging of Constantine's life is the arena scene. In this segment. Constantine jumps down into a pit where Christians are maliciously being slaughtered. Historically, the feeding-the-Christians-to-the-lions motif is right on. Under the emperor Galerius(ruled 305-311 A.D. shortly before Constantine ... moreascended to the throne) Christian persecution was at its height. While it is untrue that Constantine slew lions to save Christians, the arena scene nevertheless serves as an excellent depiction of incidents which really happened. The really notable quality of this movie lies in its portrayal of major historical happenings. Diocletian and Maximian really did abdicate the throne in 308. It is also true that his mother. Helena, was a Christian(although the details re: his relationship w/her in the movie are fictional) He did marry Fausta(although he had her and his eldest son Crispus put to death for treason in 326- long after the time period covered in this movie) The inclusion of Constantine's"divine vision" before his battle with Maxentius is essential; perhaps one of the defining moments in the entire history of Christianity. The actual battle itself is also given accurate treatment as Maxentius' cavalry was ambushed and trapped by Constantine's forces, just as the film claims. Overall it is well worth the time for anyone who is interested in Roman history, world history or the history of Christianity. CONDITION: Viewed once. Like New. PLEASE SEE

Elsewhere in the ancient world, the Romans used opal both for jewelry and in the production of cameos. Ancient Roman Celtic Thrace (Bulgaria) Bronze Jewelry Plaque Bronze Brooch AD200
Handsome Ancient Roman Bronze Jewelry Plaque AD 200. CLASSIFICATION: Roman-Celtic Bronze Brooch. ATTRIBUTION: Eastern Roman Empire(Thracia) Third Century A.D. DETAIL: A very handsome plaque containing the decorative fascia of a Roman bronze brooch. The design likely of Celtic inspiration. There remains portions of the pivot and clasp on the underside of the brooch, but the pin was broken out, as well as the hinge pivot pin as well. The piece is rather fragile and thin, so rather than add a new pin, it seemed best to mount it. The diameter of the brooch is 35 millimeters(almost 1 1/2 inches) and it weighs 3.07 grams. The style is quite characteristic of the Roman Empire’s first through third centuries. A popular style 2,000 years ago, today it is a recognizable and not uncommon find. However inasmuch as the pins used to attach the brooch to ... moreclothing tended to be very fine, they are generally not recovered intact, having decomposed/oxidized over the centuries, especially if(as often was the case) they were made of iron. You can clearly see the unmistakable evidence that the brooch spent two thousand years buried. Though the artifact is still more or less in one piece(excepting the pin) It nonetheless evidences moderately heavy porosity(surface pitting caused by burial in caustic soil) Unfortunately ancient metal, especially bronze and iron, tends to decompose in soil over the millennia. It is not too uncommon to unearth metal artifacts which are nothing more than crumbled stains within the soil(green for bronze, red for iron) Oftentimes in such circumstances you can see what was a metal artifact, but when touched it crumbles into the soil. Fortunately this bronze brooch was not unearthed in such an advanced state of decomposition. It obviously evidences considerably porosity(the fine surface pitting caused by oxidation) which kind of enhances its character, however the artifact is still intact. Jewelry was very popular in the Roman Empire. Rings. Earrings, pendants, and bracelets, fibulae, brooches

One of the world’s most famous and influential books. Meditations” by the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius(121-180 A.D. incorporates the stoic percepts he used to cope with his life as a warrior and administrator of an empire. Ascending to the imperial throne in 161 AD, Aurelius found his reign beset by natural disasters and war. In the wake of these challenges, he set down a series of private reflections, outlining a philosophy of commitment to virtue above pleasure and tranquility above happiness. Reflecting the emperor’s own noble and self-sacrificing code of conduct. This eloquent and moving work draws and enriches the tradition of Stoicism, which stressed the search for inner peace ... moreand ethical certainty in an apparently chaotic world. Serenity was to be achieved by emulating in one’s personal conduct the underlying orderliness and lawfulness of nature. And in the face of the inevitable pain, loss, and death; the suffering at the core of life, Aurelius counsels stoic detachment from the things that are beyond one’s control, and a focus on one’s own will and perception.
