American Classical Empire Grecian Couch Recamier c.1820
Here's an extremely rare and beautiful American Classical Empire Period Grecian Couch. Or recamier. This piece was most likely made in New York City around 1815- 1820. It has four big and boldly carved hairy paw feet(finished in the round) on casters, the front feet with with cornucopia and fruits and leaves, fine crotch mahogany throughout, gold gilt stenciling along the front bottom and along the back, the arms are also heavily and deeply carved with cornucopia and what looks like dogwood flowers(typical for NY furniture) and the back has rope twist carving with gilt anthemions and a big gilt accented roundel. Wow! This piece has it all! It's also much smaller than most recamiers, which makes it even more desirable and rare: it's only about 73" long, perfect for most living rooms, bedrooms and even apartments. Reupholstered ... morein bright empire green fabric with gold medallions, matched gold gimp, and has two wonderful pillows(one round with a gilt metal center and gold greek key border tape, and one square with four big lovely tassels. This is a crown piece of American Classical furniture and was restored with much(way too much) care and effort. If you collect and love classical, empire, regency, federal furniture and interiors, this is a rare rare chance to add a once in a lifetime piece to your collection. One of the front feet is a replacement but was done by a master carver who used the other original foot as a model, so it's a perfect match and fit and you wouldn't know unless someone told you. Being offered for sale is this Gorgeous Classic American Empire Crotch Mahogany Sofa circa 1850's. This beautiful 19th century sofa features fabulous carvings on the serpentine crest-rail that accent the oval framed padded area at the center. Out-ward scroll arms, a wide crotch mahogany seat-rail with applied scroll carvings at the center and bracket styled front legs. The beautiful cranberry damask fabric appears to have been recently applied and is in excellent condition. The carvings at the back and below the seat area are a lighter shade of mahogany and offer a beautiful contrast of color to the darker mahogany wood which gives this sofa a stunning presence! This sofa measures 37 1/2 inches in height from the floor to the top of the center back.Total length arm to arm measures 72 1/2 inches, seat width measures 57 1/2 inches, seat ... moredepth is 19 inches and seat height from the floor to the top of the seat measures 15 inches and this sofa weighs approximately 85 lbs. This sofa has a grand and regal presence and is very solid and tight. There is a piece of the carving missing on the left side of the back that appears to have been missing for some time. Antique American Empire Classical Crotch Mahogany Sofa c1840~Magnificent
SquareTrade © AP6.0 This sofa is a n original ca. 1840 American Empire style built from solid Santo Domingo mah ogany moldings with cherry and white pine secondary woods and exquisitely veneered surfaces of bookmatched Santo Domingo crotc h veneer with whole crot ch veneer on lyre faces of arms. The base is constructed of half round and cove pattern all the way around front and sides. Very well formed and veneered. The double cyma-curved crestrail is classic American Empire. Significant positives about this piec e from the perspec tive of an antique f urniture restorer with over 30 years experience show that this piece stands out in at least 3 ways. The original veneering shows no sign of glue failure at all. It is amazin gly intact with very little damage. The finish appears to be original. In excellent condition, and finally, it appears ... moreto have been upholstered only twice- the second time ti me with s taples. Usually on a piece like this. The wood is literally riddled by several reupholsterings with tacks and nails and often requires serious repairs to the wood before it can be upholstered again. It was entirely hand made with the highest levels of craf tsmanship- no cut corners. Hand sawn. Hand planed. In other words, pieces like this are usually worn out and are done over so many times that they're no longer usable. Not this piece. It's one of the best p reser ved p ieces I've ever had in my shop- Golden Eagle Cabinet Shop. Negatives- at 170 years of age. One will want to av oid hard use. The re upholstery could use an application of gimp along the crest rail borders- a normal finishing touch not done yet. The original coil springs have diff erent spring so unds for di fferent places one might sit. And as befit s a dowager of mature age. There is a bit of lumpiness. V isually stunning with depth and vibrant color. This piece will proudl y be the centerpiece in your h ome. The recent upholstery was done by the previous own er and needs some refining- a simple ta sk for a good upholsterer. This

The wood frame is tight and solid. Upholstered in beautiful cream color embroidered fabric and includes two matching bolsters and one square pillow. Being offered for sale is this wonderful American Classic Empire Flame Mahogany Petticoat Pier Table circa 1840. This fine 19th century table measures 36 1/2 in height. 35 1/2 inches wide, 16 1/4 inches in depth(front to back on the top) and weighs approximately 65 pounds. We believe this table to have it’s original finish and has all of the time-worn character that one would expect from of pieces from this era. The lovely large solid mahogany table top provides beautiful display possibilities and rests on a conforming serpentine flamed mahogany apron.A scalloped flame mahogany valance is found beneath the apron just above the original mirror. Substantial flame mahogany scrolled legs with applied roundels at the base connect the lovely large table top to the stepped flame mahogany base which rests on scroll carved legs with the original casters ... moreintact on all four feet. Additional display opportunity is found on the square plateau located in front of the original mirror just above the elegant stepped base. This 19th century pier/petticoat table does have its original mirror which shows some silver loss spots and cloudiness as commonly seen in mirrors from this period. The top surface does show wear to the finish and surface marks and scratches from years of use. The base sides do have some minor veneer chipping nothing major in my opinion but just thought I would mention it. These 19th century tables were referred to as Petticoat Tables because the ladies would use the mirror to check the hem of their dresses to make sure that their petticoats were not being exposed. The classical lines of this table make it a piece that is easily incorporated into any decor and would be a wonderful foyer/ hall table. It has many features consistent with his craftsmanship and style.He was regarded as one of the finest cabinetmakers in the United States. It is quite remarkable considering the state of our country at the time regarding slavery.He was African American, also known as a free man of color by historians.To be such successful entrepreneur and distinguished cabinetmaker was very rare, considering all of the societal norms at the time. Mr. Day served some of the wealthiest clients including two governors of North Carolina.Word spread quickly about his amazing craftsmanship and quality. He was an artisan as well as a cabinetmaker.There is a bronze statue of Mr. Day that stands outside ... morethe entrance to the Museum of History. Located in Raleigh, North Carolina. Wonderful crotch/flame mahogany veneered drawer fronts.The cabinetmaker was an artist as well as a craftsman to select such stunning crotch mahogany and the skill to showcase. It is second to none. The rest of the chest features solid mahogany& solid cherry woods. The secondary woods are pine. This 7 drawer chest has fantastic grains throughout.The entire chest was hand made, no doubt by an early American craftsman. A rare feature is the style of the curved drawer front of the 2 upper drawers on the lower chest(photo) It features incredible precise hand cut dovetail joinery on all 4 corners of each drawer. The drawers also feature hand planed(chamfered) drawer bottoms, with no evidence of machine tooling.The drawers have solid brass inlaid keyhole escutcheons. One drawer is missing the internal lock set, there is no key.I restored the chest from top to bottom,including the two small upper level drawers with book matched flame mahogany veneer. including some veneer restoration on the front of the chest. It has 2 rolled drawers and a large original mirror. It may be a Southern piece. It is a fresh local estate purchase from a Ga Octogenarian's home. This piece is in very nice condition. There are a few small repairs and a couple of areas that are missing veneer/ have damage. There is one small piece of molding that is missing between the drawers. The crotch mahogany is beautiful in its detail and color. The mirror is in very nice condition with a couple of small areas where it has a little silvering loss or ghosting. This splendid dresser/ chest measures a total height of 67.5 inches to the top of the mirror. Height to the top of the glove boxes is 41 inches, a total width of 41.5 inches wide and 21 inches deep and weighs approximately 160 lbs. The gorgeous mirror is framed in Walnut and rests in matching arm supports, the width of the mirror frame measures 27 1/2 inches and the old original mirror measures 27 1/2 inches high by 15 1/2 inches wide. Being offered for sale is this matched pair of Classic American Empire Crotch Mahogany Fireside Settees circa 1850. These 19th century settees are easliy found in pairs. These settees eacf feature a triple serpentine crestrail. Button& tufted back and arms with crotch mahogany arm supports and a serpentine seat rail with period mahogany ribbon trim. Each settee measures 29 3/4 inches in height from the floor to the top of the back center. With a total length of 66 inches, seat width of 46 inches and seat depth of 16 inches, with a total depth from front to back of 24 inches and seat height to the floor measures 7 inches, with each settee weighing approximately 85 lbs. These settees both have vintage deep rose velvet fabric with matching gimp trim thats not torn or ripped but could use cleaning. This splendid 19th century cabinet is a very nice size that would allow it to be utilized in about any room of your home. This cabinet features its original thick marble top. Gorgeous feathered mahogany on the backsplash and front with early hand-cut dove-tailed end on the drawer. This cabinet measures 41 1/2 inches in height from the floor to the top of the back-splash. Height from the floor to the top of the marble measures 36 3/4 inches, this cabinet is 34 3/4 inches wide and 19 1/2 inches in depth and weighs approximately 100 lbs total. This cabinet offers a wonderful storage drawer with an ogee front of feather mahogany and the cabinet doors below feature the same beautiful feathered mahogany.
