American Classical Empire Grecian Couch Recamier c.1820
Here's an extremely rare and beautiful American Classical Empire Period Grecian Couch. Or recamier. This piece was most likely made in New York City around 1815- 1820. It has four big and boldly carved hairy paw feet(finished in the round) on casters, the front feet with with cornucopia and fruits and leaves, fine crotch mahogany throughout, gold gilt stenciling along the front bottom and along the back, the arms are also heavily and deeply carved with cornucopia and what looks like dogwood flowers(typical for NY furniture) and the back has rope twist carving with gilt anthemions and a big gilt accented roundel. Wow! This piece has it all! It's also much smaller than most recamiers, which makes it even more desirable and rare: it's only about 73" long, perfect for most living rooms, bedrooms and even apartments. Reupholstered ... morein bright empire green fabric with gold medallions, matched gold gimp, and has two wonderful pillows(one round with a gilt metal center and gold greek key border tape, and one square with four big lovely tassels. This is a crown piece of American Classical furniture and was restored with much(way too much) care and effort. If you collect and love classical, empire, regency, federal furniture and interiors, this is a rare rare chance to add a once in a lifetime piece to your collection. One of the front feet is a replacement but was done by a master carver who used the other original foot as a model, so it's a perfect match and fit and you wouldn't know unless someone told you. More photos and info upon request. Buyer handles and pays for all shipping via a furniture shipper.

The base is constructed of half round and cove pattern all the way around front and sides. Very well formed and veneered. The double cyma-curved crestrail is classic American Empire. Significant positives about this piec e from the perspec tive of an antique f urniture restorer with over 30 years experience show that this piece stands out in at least 3 ways. The original veneering shows no sign of glue failure at all. It is amazin gly intact with very little damage. The finish appears to be original. In excellent condition, and finally, it appears ... moreto have been upholstered only twice- the second time ti me with s taples. Usually on a piece like this. The wood is literally riddled by several reupholsterings with tacks and nails and often requires serious repairs to the wood before it can be upholstered again. It was entirely hand made with the highest levels of craf tsmanship- no cut corners. Hand sawn. Hand planed. In other words, pieces like this are usually worn out and are done over so many times that they're no longer usable. Not this piece. It's one of the best p reser ved p ieces I've ever had in my shop- Golden Eagle Cabinet Shop. Negatives- at 170 years of age. One will want to av oid hard use. The re upholstery could use an application of gimp along the crest rail borders- a normal finishing touch not done yet. The original coil springs have diff erent spring so unds for di fferent places one might sit. And as befit s a dowager of mature age. There is a bit of lumpiness. V isually stunning with depth and vibrant color. This piece will proudl y be the centerpiece in your h ome. The recent upholstery was done by the previous own er and needs some refining- a simple ta sk for a good upholsterer. This

Classic American Empire Flamed Mahogany Petticoat~Pier~ Foyer Table c1840
Being offered for sale is this wonderful American Classic Empire Flame Mahogany Petticoat Pier Table circa 1840. This fine 19th century table measures 36 1/2 in height. 35 1/2 inches wide, 16 1/4 inches in depth(front to back on the top) and weighs approximately 65 pounds. We believe this table to have it’s original finish and has all of the time-worn character that one would expect from of pieces from this era. The lovely large solid mahogany table top provides beautiful display possibilities and rests on a conforming serpentine flamed mahogany apron.A scalloped flame mahogany valance is found beneath the apron just above the original mirror. Substantial flame mahogany scrolled legs with applied roundels at the base connect the lovely large table top to the stepped flame mahogany base which rests on scroll carved legs with the original casters ... moreintact on all four feet. Additional display opportunity is found on the square plateau located in front of the original mirror just above the elegant stepped base. This 19th century pier/petticoat table does have its original mirror which shows some silver loss spots and cloudiness as commonly seen in mirrors from this period. The top surface does show wear to the finish and surface marks and scratches from years of use. The base sides do have some minor veneer chipping nothing major in my opinion but just thought I would mention it. These 19th century tables were referred to as Petticoat Tables because the ladies would use the mirror to check the hem of their dresses to make sure that their petticoats were not being exposed. The classical lines of this table make it a piece that is easily incorporated into any decor and would be a wonderful foyer/ hall table. American Empire Antique Chest Dresser Crotch Flame Mahogany Thomas Day Ca.1825
Gorgeous American Empire antique chest of drawers.Circa 1825-1830 This piece is quite likely attributed to the work of master cabinet maker. Thomas Day of North Carolina. It has many features consistent with his craftsmanship and style. He was regarded as one of the finest cabinetmakers in the United States. It is quite remarkable considering the state of our country at the time regarding slavery. He was African American, also known as a free man of color by historians. To be such successful entrepreneur and distinguished cabinetmaker was very rare, considering all of the societal norms at the time. Mr. Day served some of the wealthiest clients including two governors of North Carolina.Word spread quickly about his amazing craftsmanship and quality. He was an artisan as well as a cabinetmaker. There is a bronze statue of Mr. Day that stands outside ... morethe entrance to the Museum of History. Located in Raleigh, North Carolina. Wonderful crotch/flame mahogany veneered drawer fronts. The cabinetmaker was an artist as well as a craftsman to select such stunning crotch mahogany and the skill to showcase. It is second to none. The rest of the chest features solid mahogany& solid cherry woods. The secondary woods are pine. This 7 drawer chest has fantastic grains throughout. The entire chest was hand made, no doubt by an early American craftsman. A rare feature is the style of the curved drawer front of the 2 upper drawers on the lower chest(photo) It features incredible precise hand cut dovetail joinery on all 4 corners of each drawer. The drawers also feature hand planed(chamfered) drawer bottoms, with no evidence of machine tooling. The drawers have solid brass inlaid keyhole escutcheons. One drawer is missing the internal lock set, there is no key.I restored the chest from top to bottom, including the two small upper level drawers with book matched flame mahogany veneer. including some veneer restoration on the front of the chest. I restored the finish by hand, with many, many coats of hand rubbed varnish showcasing the spe
American Philadelphia Empire Antique Furniture & Cabinetmakers Pennsylvania
Philadelphia Empire Furniture" By John William Boor. With Allison, Jonathan, Christopher, Peter Boor. Published by the University Press of New England in 2006. DISCUSSION: This volume looks closely for the first time at Philadelphia Empire furniture and the development of decorative arts in Philadelphia between 1800 and 1840. The authors explore Neo-Classicism. Contemporary history of Philadelphia, the emergence of Greek-Revival architecture, and the cabinetmakers of Philadelphia Empire furniture. At the beginning of the 19th century Greek-inspired architecture gained popularity in Philadelphia and the city became known for its classically-inspired monumental buildings. Newly designed structures of ancient inspiration were decorated with classical furniture that became the prevailing style in private homes as well as public buildings. ... moreThe arrival of immigrant craftsmen from Europe in the early 19th century and their subsequent collaboration with American furniture makers produced highly sophisticated Empire designs. Neither French nor English. The designs incorporated purely American elements and became known as American Empire. Nineteenth-century Philadelphia Empire craftsmen were particularly well-known for their extensive motif carving, which often has a fluid, three-dimensional character. Philadelphia Empire Furniture’ illustrates in color and describes in detail hundreds of Philadelphia decorative art forms from this period. Including wood types, dimensions, and maker(if known) Chapters are dedicated to each of the following forms: card tables, platform pedestal tables, pier tables, worktables, sofas, chairs, sideboards, secretaries, chests, bedsteads, looking glasses, clocks, and other decorative elements. A separate chapter is devoted to the previously unpublished sketchbook of accomplished craftsman Anthony G. Quervelle. Besides Quervelle, other talented and successful Philadelphia furniture makers included Michel Bouvier, Charles White, Cook& Parkin, and Joseph B. Barry, among several. This book

Program & Ticket Stub British Empire & American Services Boxing Tournament 1918
Here is an original program and accompanying ticket stub from the British Empire And American Services Boxing Tournament held at the Royal Albert Hall. London on Dec. 11& 12, 1918. The tourney participants were teams comprised of members of the military services of the British Empire(South Africa, Canada, Royal Navy, New Zealand, Australia, R. A. F. and the United States. Program measures 7" x 9.5" six pages. The event was sponsored by the Imperial Services Boxing Association. Included in the contents are lists of the members of each team and team captain; rules of the ISBA; explanation of the record and contest boards; team colors; ISBA governing council members; brackets for the eight weight classes. One interesting note: Silence Is Requested During The Boxing" is printed at the top of page two under"Read Carefully" ... moreWhat are the odds of compliance with that request from an arena probably half filled with American servicemen supporting their fellow participants? As you can see from the scan the program is rough. It has extra folds; wear; soiled. However, it is intact and complete and still very readable. The brackets have been filled in with ink and pencil. I won't say who won! No doubt many of the participants were either former world champs or later became champs. Some of the better known boxers in the tourney were J. Johnny) Basham; J. W. Wilde; Edie MCoorty; Mike O'Dowd; Augie Ratner; Jake Abel; Eddie Shannon; Eddie Coulon; Joe Lynch. PLEASE view my other auctions for more ephemera from the same era.
