Flat bezel. The bezel measures 13mm X 10mm The center of the bezel has a nicely engraved LEGIONARY EAGLE. Now the actual Eagle design is one of the best that I have ever received to work on. Most of these rings have an engraved outline or picture of an Eagle but this example is an intaglio carved into the surface of the bezel to be used as a seal ring in wax to seal letters. We also can tell that it was made as a seal because if you look at the ring the eagle is facing in the opposite direction that most are shown. However. When used as a seal the design comes out the correct way. You can still see the minute details like the veining of the feathers and the features of the eagles face. As you see in my pictures. These artifacts were originally designed to be enjoyed by their owners and I have tried to return these treasures to a state which will both charm and enchant their new owners and show the skill and craftsmanship of old. What a SUPER ring! This ring was found in Ancient Moesia and dates from 200- 400 A.D. This ring is from one of the many Auxiliary Legions that Rome raised from the native levees in her provinces. You will notice in the picture above that this ring was made to use as a seal. The center of this bezel has a nicely engraved monogram done in the punched-dot style. LOOK.at how nicely every single punched-dot is still as clear as the day this ring ... morewas made. The central design is of four curved lines in opposed pairs. These make a pair of oval or eye shapes which have a design in them. The design in one is of a letter"M" and the other also seems to have a letter"M" but they could both be"Lightning Bolts" since they are both going in the same direction. The color and shine of this ring are AMAZING. LOOK.at all of my pictures and you will see how mirrorlike the surface of this ring is and even the branches of the trees in my yard are reflected in the surface. I have been looking through my records to find which units were operating in that area and may account for this design. But haven't identified it so far. I believe that it may have belonged to one of the Auxiliary units that were attached to the 10th Legion. The Romans would levy troops from people who had skills in war that weren't standard to the legions and employ them against their enemies. It was common for career soldiers to move from legion to legion based on which Legate would see the most profitable action and therefore amass more loot for his troops.
