Sir Roy Strong, widely recognized for his expertise in both art history and garden history, surveys garden pictures ranging from Elizabethan miniatures to eighteenth-century alfresco conversation pieces, from suites of paintings of a single garden to amateur watercolors. He inquires into the origin of the English garden picture genre, its development prior to the invention of photography, its greatest exponents, its reliability as ... morehistorical evidence of actual gardens, and its place within the larger European tradition of picturing the garden. The English, Strong observes, were slow in picturing the reality of their gardens. Until well into the Stuart age, the garden in art served as a symbol, and only gradually did this give way to the impulse to record the facts of contemporary garden-making. In the backgrounds of portraits of Jacobean and Caroline garden owners, the garden is no longer an emblem; it becomes instead a document demonstrating the owners’ pride in their gardens made in the new Renaissance manner. We are listing today for your consideration a lovely pair of Antique 19th Century Deepset Walnut Wood and Gilt Frames with Original Signed Watercolor Painting Portraits of Man& Woman. We are assuming Husband& Wife. The frames and paintings are in Excellent Shape with minimal wear to the walnut frames. The frames measure 15" x 12 3/4" x 2 5/8" The have gold gilding as well as the original gilt edged mat and the paintings are below glass. The portraits are signed each D.J. Artist on the front in watercolor and on the back David Jones 71& David Jones 72 in pencil. We don't know anything about the artist, we did a search and came up with nothing. The painting of the man has a stamp on the paper in black Hovey's Rives. We could not find anything on that as well. Each portrait is on cut out paper which is pasted ... moreon heavier paper. Extremely Rare&Valuable Collection of Antique Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy
This is a collection of 12 astonishingly beautiful classical antique Chinese paintings. Each paired with an incredible work of calligraphy beautifully describing the scene. The master artist appears to be Xu Xiang Jie. These are quite rare and special and should go to a museum or very serious collector. I purchased the collection when I lived in Beijing in 1985 at Liulichang. The paintings and calligraphy are in good antique condition but do show some signs of their age, including a bit of wear and foxing on the paper in some spots. The hand crafted wooden cover for the collection is missing a piece of wood at the bottom, which can be replaced. The book is quite unique, as usually only single pages are ever found. In between each of the images are several pages of text, likely romantically speaking about the benefits of each position. Our research has shown that similar single page paintings at Christie's and Sotheby's date to the 17th/18th century and sell for $3000 to $5000 each, and we have yet to find an example of a complete book that ever sold, so this piece must surely be valuable!
