RARE Estate Sale Find: Magnificent Vintage Reliquary + Relic St. Rita of Cascia
This beautiful and very rare reliquary with relic of Saint Rita was obtained at the estate sale of a wealthy Italian lady in Philadelphia. Her family did not know the history of how she obtained it. She"always had it, had a great devotion to Saint Rita" The reliquary itself is a 12 inch plaster statue of St. Rita, beautiful face with a bump on the forehead where St. Rita received the stigmata of Our Lords' thorn. It is a heavy statue, and has been damaged and repaired in the past. A close up of the neck region shows that is where the head was severed from the body, it has been repaired and seems stable to me. There are also some paint chips missing, especially at the gold base; the family told me they covered the exposed white plaster where the base was chipped with artist pigment called golden ochre, it matches amazingly well. ... moreThey did this before the estate sale. The statue weighs nearly 2 1/2 pounds, very heavy and fairly large(12 inches) The statue also has a serial number on the back bottom. The relic itself it a metal cross with the relic enclosed in the front compartment, it cant be opened and on the reverse side is an icon showing St. Rita receiving the stigmata(I have pictures of both sides above) What the relic is of I have no idea and neither did the family nor do they know when the statue and relic were"married" to create a unique reliquary and holder but again"its always been like that" but obviously the two were separate at some time. I am offering it a a low price due to the damage to the reliquary. Please ask any questions, I have tried to show as much damage as I can.

Please consult the Patron Saints website for the biography of St Julie. The items both date from the time before her canonisation when she was known as Blessed or Bienheureuse Julie Billiart. The first is a wonderfully gold accented art deco pattern holy card of the Saint. The image is actually a tiny black and white photograph of the famous portrait of the Saint which has been cut and stuck to the holy card. Which bears a quotation from her in French. The other item from the same period(around 1900) is a card measuring about 2 by 3.5 inches. At the top is printed the coat of arms of the Notre Dame de Namur Sisters. Including St Julie's often repeated exclamation of joy: Ah, qu'il est bon, le Bon ... moreDieu! O how good is the Good Lord! Sewn onto the card is a smaller gold textile envelope containing a relic of the Saint. There is no further identification for what the relic is as there is no further label. It can be said that this is definitely an officially issued relic of the Mother Foundress. I have visited the Mother house in Namur. A delightful southern Belgian town. The huge Mother House is still alive with hundreds of children the congregation was founded to educate. There are two very special wonders. Firstly a chapel in the play ground housing the shrine containing the earthly remains of St Julie. The other is a priceless collection of early gold and silver reliquaries and ecclesiastical items kept in a strong room which historically ended up in the care of the convent during the Napoleonic misrule in Europe.
