The inside features the Original Purple Velvet Writing area that opens on both sides to reveal(2) 13 1/4" X 9 1/2" areas that hold paper and documents. There is little wear to the Velvet"hinge" though the red velvet underneath has suffered from light moth wear over the years. All in all this is a Great looking 125+ Year old Lap Desk that Displays nicely just as it sits and could become a nice piece for Use with just a bit of customizing and some tlc. The Finish has not been cleaned or polished in any way and should clean up nicely& the missing Brass Shield Still Displays Nicely as is. The lid leaves a small 1/8" Gap when Closed. It probably is a smaller version of what could be special ordered and may have been a hall table sample. I date it to the 50's as the tag on the bottom does not have a zip code. It measures 26" high. 18.25" wide, and 6.5" deep. It has two pull out writing surfaces with decorative pulls. The wood may be cherry or mahogany. Due to its size. I think this is either a model for a store or a salesman's sample. It is adorable!
