Late 18th, early 19th c. in the Baroque taste. Extremely ornate carved and pierced crest and legs. Part of a 3 Piece Salon Suite that will be offered this auction. See our other listings. The settee is continental and is from Spain or Portugal. Nicks and chips to wood, fabric is worn, stained and torn. A fantastic work of carved art measuring 48" high, 68" long. Baroque furniture was in vogue during the late 17th Century. Italian baroque architects Gianlorenzo Bernini and Francesco Borromini had showcased their innovative designs in Rome. By this time, the baroque design was only on the surface of the furniture, but ... morelater towards the last quarter of the century, a lot of changes were introduced into the design. At this time, caryatids and the scroll patterns were introduced. Using the caryatid and scroll patterns in baroque designs means the use of female figures along with scroll-shaped and spiral-turned legs to support the structure of the furniture. Description: This listing is for a Rare 18th Century Louis XV Period Carved Fruitwood Settee. It is a stunning piece. Boasting a steeply serpentine frame, curving around the upholstered back with offshoots of acanthus carvings throughout, culminating at the top center in a carved foliate motif. Long rounded arms slope from the back, curling into deep hand rests over cabriole arm supports. A flat upholstered seat rests over a wavy apron with foliate carvings that mirror the crest, flanked by cabriole legs terminating in french toes wrapped in acanthus leaves. The joints are locked in place with exposed peg construction. The back of the sofa is exposed, held in place with original iron braces that secure the back firmly in place. ... moreThis is a stunning petite settee with a rather remarkable level of strength despite it's age and delicate nature. Oscar Wilde A Decorative William IV Period Rexine Upholstered Settee c.1835 Period: William IV Provenance: Wolverhampton Railway Station. By Repute Date: c.1830-40 Height: 27 inches Length: 76 inches Depth: 25 inches The William IV period three-seater settee or sofa. Covered in the original naturally distressed aubergine brown rexine with loose squab cushion, having scroll arms on well-turned and fluted mahogany legs to brass ends, and by repute originally from Wolverhampton Railway Station, survives from the second quarter of the nineteenth century. The settee is in‘attic’ condition. That is, left entirely for a long period in original order. There are a few small tears and creases to the rexine. The whole ... moreis sturdy and stable and she proves extremely decorative with her reverse not having rexine to it. The piece would have probably sat on castors at one stage. The first station on the site that is now known as Wolverhampton Railway station is the site that was opened on 1 July 1852 by the Birmingham. Wolverhampton and Stour Valley Railway, a subsidiary of the London and North Western Railway(LNWR) it was named Wolverhampton Queen Street. The only visible remnant of the original station is the Queen's Building, the gateway to Railway Drive which was the approach road to the station. The building was originally the carriage entrance to the station and was completed three years before the main station building. Today, it forms part of Wolverhampton bus station. This settee would have been made about 15 years previous to the opening of the station and its suitably relatively narrow proportions would have seen it sat in the waiting or ticketing area.
