Jerusalem Olive Branch Wood Slice & Metal Jesus Crown Of Thorns c 1890-1910
This rare Jerusalem souvenir measures a little over 3 1/2" across and slightly over 3/4" thick. It is slice of an olive branch with the bark. Some if the bark has come off one side(see photos) But this may have occurred in the process of cutting the slice. A 2 1/4" cast metal insert is a silhouette of Jesus wearing a crown of thorns. JERUSALEM is hand written on the bottom of the plaque. The hanger is attached on the back with two nails. The original ribbon has disintegrated with age. This is a rare collectible. Posted with

This near mint condition wood slice plaque features a litho of Warner Sallman's lovely 1942 painting. Christ at Heart's Door" Warner Sallman was an evangelical Christian painter from Chicago, who's mid-century portrait, Head of Christ" has sold more than 500 million copies. In 1994, the New York Times predicted he'd be voted the"best-known artist of the century" Quite often the bark on these plaques has dried out, faded and fallen off. Not so with this one. The print is still quite vibrant too. These wood slice religious plaques were very popular in the mid-century and were often sold as travel souvenirs at places like the Grand Canyon or Niagara Falls(go figure) This plaque is 12" x 6.25" x 1" and is marked. Copyright date of 1942-1970, Kriebel and Bates U.S.A. There is one small defect ... morein the bottom half of Christ's robe(see last pict) but it is barely noticeable and must be seen in the right light to be seen at all. If you're into Christianity. About 10 x 4 inches, that has The Lord’s Prayer printed on the front, along with some rustic pine cone motifs, and YELLOWSTONE PARK at the bottom. The back has a rawhide hanger This shows only light wear. There seems to be no big scratches or scuffs on it, some edge bark is missing in places. Please look over the pictures. These plaques were created by slicing a real piece of natural wood(from a branch or small tree) at an angle. Creating an oval with an edge of real bark, then gluing an image onto it. A rustic old Souvenir here!
