Fretwork Victorian 1880 Fancy Stick & Ball Architectural 70" long x 20 1/4" tall
Up for Auction I have an Antique Victorian Fretwork Wood Gingerbread Stick and Ball Spandrel Arch. I was told that it was taken out of an old bank that was in business in the mid to late 1800's. It was part of the fancy Tellers window. It does come in two sections and each section can stay stationary or swing from side to side. The wood is Oak. Best used at the top section of a double cased opening. Will add such charactor and charm to any decor. There is some slight damage to the piece if you look at pictures 5& 6 one small ball is missing and a few sticks have been glued back onto arch. If you look at the over all picture. It is not very obvious due to the busy pattern. I never expect a piece of this age to be perfect. It also looks to me like one of the sticks has been replaced in picture 4. The long end pieces are not Oak and ... moremay have been added at a later time.These pieces are a RARE find of days gone past. I have seen these arches in a few western movies in Banks and Saloons. This piece of victorian fretwork is salvage from the restoration of an 1890 opera house. It measures 39 by 12 inches. The finish is worn and there are four places that will need repair. One of the balls is split. And the fretwork is broken in three other spots. I tried to capture these defects with the camera, so please look carefully at the pictures. It should be an easy repair. Genuine antique. For over a century old. This fretwork is in good condition. Purchased in the 60s. Originally from a mansion demolished in Kansas City. Disassembles into 3 pieces(2 sides and a center) for easier shipping. Fine Victorian craftsmanship. Intended to convey affluence and impress guests. This ornamental fretwork surely enjoyed a place of prominence, such as the doorway between the entry hall and front parlor. Description: Intricately hand sawn oak. Stick and ball spindles with beehive beads on outer sides. Nautilus swirls on each side of center with stick and ball fanning. Many cut curved pieces reminiscent of vines. Natural finish though it may ... morehave been painted at some point. Note: the top wood pole is not part of the fretwork– it was added via the fretwork’s original attachment holes to mount unit to wall. Condition: M isc. scratches and dings expected of its age. From the 1880's- 1890's. A lovely vintage oak fretwork or carpenter's lace. With a sunburst center, on each side Moorish fretwork, has stick and ball fanning on both ends, with small border of stick and ball surrounding the sides and top. Two horizontal braids under the Moorish work. Really quite a beautiful piece, much work went into this. There is one piece broken on the right side of the Moorish work upper left, but hard to see. Antique Vintage Stick and Ball Fretwork 13 3/4" X 58 3/4" Architectural Salvage
Here is a salvaged piece of stick and ball fretwork. The piece measures about 58 3/4" long and is about 13 3/4" high. Piece is in very decent shape for its age. But does have a couple of condition issues. There are a couple of cracks in the wood on the center piece. I can see one ball where half of the ball is missing. It looks like two of the sticks are slightly warped, and there are some splits in the balls as it looks like each ball is joined together with tiny nails. I believe this is the original finish as it has the appearance of finish that has aged. A couple of small dings in the wood but no significant damage at all. Original. Antique, architectural piece. Guaranteed to be Victorian era. Much larger balls than ordinary. No missing pieces! Beveled edges to the left and right with grooves above and below. Dentil trim along the bottom with step beveled side bracket at each end. Some room at each side and along the top for it to be cut down for custom sizing. It measures approx 45 inches by about 18 1/2 inches. 1 5/8 inches thick. Lots of surface imperfections, but very solid overall condition. No breaks or repairs. Many other Victorian artifacts listed. Incredible all original antique architectural salvage victorian oak stick and ball salvaged fretwork panel from the sun porch of an early victorian cottage. This piece is huge. It measures 12 feet in length. 19" wide and about an inch thick. From a 1909 Victorian mansion in Washington state, it is in all original condition, With original finish. Vintage Stick & Ball Spindle Fretwork Panel Victorian Old Architectural Salvage
Re-listing this due to some things I overlooked in writing the description. Corrected below. Auction is for a vintage. Original Victorian period stick and ball or spindle type panel of fretwork- Striking wall hanging piece against a light background and set off a wall it throws some off some great shadows. Open center is an interesting element. It is stained a brown color and is hardwood. It is in great shape considering age. The finish has worn unevenly in spots- has some imperfections that include a'ball' missing in the center that attaches it one of the four sides, one of the spindles nearest the center is not attached at the one end and there may be a few others that are loose and perhaps shifted position over time and the previous'buyer' pointed out that the balls were not uniform in size- and since they were hand turned ... morethat is possible and likely, but I do not see where it detracts. I don't see where anything else is missing, damaged or has had a major repair, but please check the photos before you bid or buy- both sides are depicted. Size is 58 inches long by a little over a foot tall. I'm guessing the shipping calculator is going to show the cost to ship as being higher than it actually will be. I will adjust it if necessary, should be under $20 to anywhere in the US- let me know if you have any questions
