His son(Johann Christoph Homann) re-engraved the plate to correct the western coastline of North America, shown here extending very far west and north, with very little detail. California is no longer shown as an island, although the remnants of the interior sea can be seen near the Pais de Moozemleck where a river nearly connects with the Mississippi River system, hinting at the possibility of a Northwest Passage. The Great Lakes are taking shape, being actively explored by the French fur traders and the Hudson Bay Company. The right hand map depicts Kamchatka. Though only tentatively explored at this point, Russian forces under Vladimir Alassov took control of the peninsula in 1697. In the process they stumbled upon a small colony of Japanese shipwreck survivors, a discovery that lead the Russians to speculate that Kamchatka was one and the same with Yedso(Jedo or modern day Hokkaido) the northernmost part of Japan. 1743 Map of Bavaria Here is an original 1743 engraving of the surrounding area of Munich Germany. It was published in Nuremburg. Germany by the Homann Heirs. Copper-engraving. Hand colored in wash and outlined. Its overall measurement is 24" wide by 21" high. I recently had this map appraised as authentic by Swann Galleries and its auction value is $600-$800. It is in very good condition with no restoration. Marks, tears or folds. Being from an atlas it has a center fold line which has no breaks or splits. There is light foxing which can be seen in the photos. I show the back side to see the paper condition as well as to help verify its authenticity. Note that the stain is an etch through of just the green color as a result of the chemical used for green during that era. Feel free to ask questions. Amplissimae Regionis Mississipi Seu Provinciae Ludovicianae. By: Johann Baptist Homann This is a remarkably detailed map showing the majority of North America with a more specific focus on the interior. Mississippi, and Great Lakes Region. Throughout the map, forts, towns, and Native American tribe locations are listed while the rest of the interior is filled with trees, mountains, and a scene of natives hunting buffalo. The map features two beautiful cartouches; one showing a Buffalo flanked by two Native Americans, and another showing a beaver colony at the base of Niagara Falls. The title cartouche is decorated by a buffalo head, next to Father Louis Hennepin who explored the Great Lakes region and claimed to have reached the mouth of the Mississippi. His purported route and those of other explorers are traced on the map. Condition: Map ... moreis in C+ condition with some staining. Minor edge tears, and no right margin. Yes. There are 2 antiq. maps in this listing. I can not interpret all of them completely. But 1 has the Homann(Homan) name on it. The one without an identifying name is this map of Dusseldorf. Germany. I also think the city legend is incomplete; as there are only 2 churches named. Strong Colors. There is a Coat of Arms in the upper right corner. A few partially erased pencil marks in the lower right corner; and most of the wrinkles are what I would refer to as'soft wrinkles' a 1" tear in the lower left + 1/2" a little higher. Repaired with archival tape(remove w/water) I do not think there is anything referred to as any'fold creases' The 2nd photo shows the front with large margins about 3 1/8" top& 2 1/8"bottom. 2 3/4" left& almost 3" right. I think the river translates into the Rhein ... moreRiver. There is a photo showing what I believe is known as Laid Paper(or linen/rag? Whatever the name is; it shows what looks like a'chain'like watermark) The back has minor blemishes from storage. Paper size is about 16 1/2"h x 23 1/2"w. No frame. The 2nd map is of Kiel. Germany; the Klein Kiel& Kieler Haafen. There are 2 legends in the upper corners& a Bird's Eye View insert of the city. I think the cartuch states the plans& proposed sights attributed by office of Homania(John B. Homann or Homan) Again. Please note these are my interpretations! The margin is about 3/4" top and bottom 1" with both left& right margins almost 3" each. Paper size 16 1/2"h x 23 1/2w" Strong Colors. There is a'star compass' A few partially erased pencil marks in the lower right corner; mostly'soft wrinkles' and hardly anything that I would refer to as'fold creases' The back has minor blemishes from storage. The Homann family became the most important map publishers in Germany in the eighteenth century, the business being founded by J.B. Homann in Nuremberg about the year 1702. Soon after publishing his first atlas in 1707 he became a member of the Berlin academy of Sciences and in 1715 he was appointed Geographer to the Emperor. After the founder's death in 1724, the firm was continued under the direction of his son until 1730 and was then bequeathed to his heirs on the condition that it trades under the name of Homann Heirs. This is a large and extraordinarily interesting map of Utopia by German cartographer Johann Baptist Homann. First state of the first of the“Schlarraffenland” or the English equivalent“Cockaigne” maps. Which parody paradise, depicted as a“land of milk and honey” where chickens fly ... morearound already cooked and each home is surrounded by a hedge of sausage. Schlarraffenland maps were popularized by German cartographers Homann and Seutter; this one is attributed to Homann. The map has all the“normal” characteristics of a real map depicting a real country: latitude/longitude lines, a scale, topography(forests, rivers, lakes, mountains) place names, demarcated regions. But, of course, the devil is in the details. The longitude of this Schlarraffenland(from 360º to 550º) literally places it off the chart—its latitude situates it on the equator, where sin is not partial to day or night. The scale suggests that one of the country’s big mouths(Schlarrafische grosse Mäuler” equals two small venereal or arrogant mouths(Kleine venerische oder Hoffärtige Mäuler” There is much fun in decoding the map’s cartographic humor, but, of course, there is always some sobering truth in something“funny”in recognizing their own faults, viewers get the message: reform your sinful ways. Here the moon is presented as it can never be seen from Earth, at a greater than 360 degrees and with all visible features given equal weight. Cartographer: Johann Baptist Homann(March 20. 1664- July 1, 1724) was the most prominent and prolific map publisher of the 18th century. Homann was born in Oberkammlach, a small town near Kammlach, Bavaria, Germany. As a young man Homann studied in a Jesuit school and nursed ambitions of becoming a Dominican priest before converting to Protestantism in 1687. Following his conversion, Homann moved to Nuremberg and found employment as a notary. Around 1693 Homan briefly relocated to Vienna, where he lived and studied printing and copper plate engraving until 1695. Afterwards he returned to Nuremberg where, in 1702, he founded the commercial publishing firm that would bear his name. In the next five years Homann produced hundreds of maps and developed a distinctive style characterized by heavy detailed engraving, elaborate allegorical cartouche work, and vivid hand color. The Homann firm, due to the lower cost of printing in Germany, was able to undercut the dominant French and Dutch publishing houses while matching the diversity and quality of their output. B

This map is in beautiful condition. With a heavy, dark impression signifying an early pressing, beautiful original hand colouring on clean heavy and stable paper, a wonderful example of this hard to find map. A ... morewonderfully constructed map. An uncommon 1st edition, showing California as an Island based on Nicolas Sanson's second model, with additions of the towns, S Isidoro, Gigante and N S de la Guadalupe inserted in the south of the Island. The Straits of Anian are shown forming a Northwest Passage between California and the mythical Terra Esonis, which forms a nearly continuous land bridge from the Northwest to Asia. The Pays de Moozemleck is shown east of the Straits of Anian. This landmark remains virtually unchanged through all of Homann's maps of America, despite the later transition to a peninsular California, resulting in an odd change from a coastal to an apparently landlocked position for this landmark. The Great Lakes have a little more updated information and the Mississippi River shows the results of the early French Jesuit explorations. The rivers source extends to the far North of the limits of the maps produced 20 and 30 years earlier. Although Le Moyne's mythical lake in the Southeastern US remains. The title cartouche is based upon De Fer's landmark map of 1699. The top dedication cartouche is based upon De L'Isle's 1703 map of Canada. Ref: Tool

Rare! c.1712 Homann Map of Scotland!
Up for auction is a rare map of Scotland c.1712 made by Johann Baptist Homann(1664-1724) This map predates the transfer of his firm to his sons in 1731(at which point the maps were printed with Homann Heirs or Latin equivalents of that instead of just his name) Map is in good condition for its age. As you can see. The peripheral has seen better days, but the map itself is unaffected by this. There are some folds and creases here and there, but it remains flat. There are also some small stains present, but nothing too detracting. There is a stain across the center from the strip on the back where it was originally adhered to an atlas, but this is common. The colors didn't show up very well in my photos, and it is bolder and brighter than what you see! Overall a great piece of cartographic history! Here is a 1740 map of the East Indies published by Homann Heirs. The map features islands in the Gulf of Mexico. Along with Mexico and the southern coast of the United States. The map measures about 21&3/4" wide and 25" high. It has four spots of glue holding it to a piece of glass. Otherwise. Condition is very good. Please study the photos carefully for the best view of condition. Impressed into the top of the map is"Fco. Xavier Castellanos, probably the name of a previous owner, Francisco Xavier Castellanos.
