Mexico is the small village ... moreof Mata Ortiz. The village was a small poor agricultural village. In the 1970's, Juan Quezada began marketing pots to a trader who sold them as prehistoric pots after rubbing Quezada's name off of them. The potter began etching his name into the his pottery. From there a movement began known as the Mata Ortiz Pottery. The pottery was designed after the prehistoric patterns found in the archaeological location of Paquime. This pottery is an animal effigy. It looks to have been made to honor the owl. But it could be another animal. The mythology of the owl is widespread and varied. Mexico has several meanings: There is an old saying in Mexico that is still in use: Cuando el tecolote canta. El indio muere(When the owl cries/sings, the Indian dies" The Popol Vuh, a Mayan religious text, describes owls as messengers of Xibalba(the Mayan"Place of Fright" They believed that owls were messengers and harbingers of the dark powers. More in the Northern part of Mexico. There is a legend known as La Lechuza. The legend is a part of owl mythology that involves a story of a black magician or"evil witch" that was cursed and turned into a large bird. Many believe she was turned into a large owl and stalks the night in the country of Mexico and some of the border states. This owl mythology says that if one sees the lechuza at night. She will whistle at you and you will wake the next day with many bruises or wounds on your body. The pottery is round with a rounded bottom. So it sways. The effigy has two hands or claws sticking out of the front. The effigy measures approximately 6 3/4 inches tall by 7 inches. The bottom of the pottery has the artist's name etched into the bottom. The artist is Lallada Ortiz. It is dated 2/4/90. The jar is in good condition. It has some blemishes here and there. There is one chip/punched hole by the left claw.

We got this at an Estate Sale. But the potter and exact age is not known. Please excuse any glares, white spots or shadows. The jar is in very good original condition. It has an old 1 1/2" shallow chip on the edge of the top rim. 3 small shallow chips on the top rim, some glaze flaking on the edge of the ear handle, and it appears to have a hard to notice old tight spider hairline on the very bottom of the base, but it holds water and makes a nice ring when tapped. The jar measures approx. 18" tall by 8" wide across the top rim and 8 3/4" wide across the base. The inside inner rim where a lid would rest is approx. 6" wide. The churn jar is marked with the capacity, a 4 to the left of the loop handle. Folks, this is a very good vintage Catawba Valley North Carolina pottery 4 gallon churn jar crock and it would go wonderful in a southern folk pottery collection or home. For your consideration is an estate find. It is a 1 QT. size Antique Stoneware Pottery Two tone Whisky Jug or Crock with a finger handle. It measures about 9" tall x 5 1/2" in diameter It has no cracks or chips on the spout or the handle. there are three small(very small) chips around the top flat edge. The rest of the jug looks to be near perfect. It does not have a cork. I am not sure of the age. But someone more versed in old crocks and jugs may be able to provide me with more information. Up for bid is an Antique Stoneware Pottery Little Brown jug holds about 1 gallon. Has an"applied" handle to slip your thumb through. Jug is in good condition. Common markings left from the firing process. Has a dark brown glaze similar to"salt glaze" around entire jug except on the bottom. This item is not marked, I do not know if it was homemade or mass produced. Workmanship is very nice, does have"fleck or pit" spots under the glaze which makes it more interesting. Here for your consideration is an antique American Folk pottery stoneware jug. This is a one gallon jug measuring 11" tall and is 7" in diameter at the base. This features a tan salt glaze finish with a slight"orange peel" surface. It also features a cobalt blue slip trail in a bull's eye floral design. It is incised with the maker's name. S.L. Pewtress& Co. Fair Haven, Conn. They operated from 71 Chatham Street in the Fair Haven district of New Haven, Conn. from 1868 to 1887. This jug dates to about 1870. This is in good condition with some character flaws common in the manufacturing of these pieces like glaze skips and small"grit" pieces. For your consideration is a one gallon cone top shoulder jug. Made of stoneware. Debossed into the bottom it says: THE BUCKEYE POTTERY CO MACOMB ILL The writing is glazed over, but I could see 0 punctuation. This company existed 1882-1941. I assume this jug was one of the first pieces this company manufactured that had white glaze, because the turkey eye dripping leads me to believe it was fired right after salt glazed items were fired. The height is almost 10 1/2" and the bottom is approximately 7" in diameter. There are 0 cracks, however there is a very minor(probably insignificant) chip.

If the whole jug is filled it is 2 1/2 Gallons(it has a small corn cob in it that had been used where the cork is) It measures 14 1/2" Tall. 9 3/4" in Width. It weighs almost 10 lbs. empty. We have here an Antique Stoneware Pottery Jug. It is smaller. 1 quart and measures 8" tall by 3 3/4" wide at the base, it measures 4 1/2" at its widest point. Antique West Troy N. Y. Pottery 1 gallon stoneware jug 1800's
I am pleased to offer this West Troy N. Y. Pottery stoneware 1 gallon jug. It is 11 1/2" high and weighs about 6 pounds. Please look at the pictures for condition. Please notice the handle. It has a crack on the bottom but not on the top so I'm not sure if it happened in the making of it. There are no other chips or cracks. I have 3 total on e-bay presently and will combine on shipping. This should be an exciting auction as these will be starting at $9.99.

Antique Vintage 1/2 Gallon Whiskey Moonshine Pottery Jug Crock Glazed
Estate find. A 1/2 gallon pottery whiskey moonshine jug. This jug is in pretty good shape for its age. I do not see any cracks in this. There is normal vintage some normal wear,discoloration and overall"old" look. Measures approximately 9" tall and approximately 6" wide. with cork lid. Very nice collectible. I know very little about this item so please ask questions. there is 2 small splits on handle and one on lip of jug. to me they look like they have been there since it was made. Please view all photos carefully for details of the condition.

The nicely off white glazed jug with dark lettering shows usual wear for an item over 100 yrs. Observed no chips on top of pour small chip and crazing on bottom. Let the picture be the judge as to condition. Handle is intact and show two piece process. Measures about 12"h X 6 3/4" w. This item must have insurance.
