Most likely pennsylvania, smaller redware jug has a chip on front of body, handle is in very good condition,some factory roughness around of outside of spout, jug has a very awesome glaze 3/4 of jug has a black like frog spotting. Jug has 2 small chips on bottom, and a couple very tight drying hairlines. Jug has some small drying lines in glaze, I believe surface only, jug is 100% solid. You can feel the small cracks-lines on side. definitely factory) only on one side in 3 areas. Awesome little jug. Measures just under 6 inches high. Larger jug has a darker glaze. In excellent condition, jug has no cracks at all. What looks to be cracks running all over through body, is something done in the making. These can not be felt or seen on the inside. Jug has 2 chips on outside ... moreof spout, some roughness on inside, and outside of spout. Handle is in excellent condition, some pinhead sized flakes. Jug is 100% solid. Fredrick was the son of Wallace Cowden, founder of Cowden Potteries in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in 1861, Fredrick worked briefly for his father at the pottery before enlisted in the Union Army for the Civil War. He returned after the war and worked with his father and Isaac j. Wilcox in the firm of Cowden& Wilcox Fredrick's father died in 1872 and Fredrick continued the business. I love that on the very bottom there are finger prints from when the jug was handled before the glaze was dried( I guess the little things amuse me) on the handle there seems to be a hairline crack I think its in the glaze only& not all the way threw you cant even see it unless you are at the perfect angle& I assure you it was never repaired or glued! Up for bids is this unusual antique Mid 19thC Dutch or Pennsylvania Dutch Cobalt Blue Decorated Advertising Stoneware Jug. The jug stands 18 1/2" high with a base diameter of 8 1/4" It has a very unusual handleless form. The writing is in Dutch but the jug looks more American so possibly Pennsylvania Dutch but we are unsure. There is an old cork stopper. There are some minor chips around base. F. H. Cowden. Antique Stoneware Canning Jug, Harrisburg, PA- 1881- 1888 Nice stamped antique jug made by F. H. Cowden in Harrisburg. PA in the 1880's. It has an unusually large mouth, 2.25" wide, for use as a canning vessel. F. H. was the successor to his father. John W. Cowden's, stoneware business in Harrisburg, PA. The elder Cowden started his pottery business with Isaac J. Wilcox(Cowden& Wilcox) as the Civil War started in 1861. The son. F. H. Cowden, enlisted in company C, Two Hundred and First Pennsylvania volunteers in 1864, served one year, and was honorably discharged at war's end. When he returned, F. H. worked with his father and took the company over on the elder's death in 1872. From 1881 to 1888 he operated the business alone as F. H. Cowden. THIS IS AN ORIGINAL F. H. COWDEN JUG. F. H. Cowden was the ... morefifth generation of his line of descent in America. The original ancestor. Matthew Cowden, came from the north of Ireland and settled in Chester county, PA around 1730. They were likely of Scots-Irish ancestry and documents reveal Revolutionary War as well as Civil War involvement. His father laid out the city of Harrisburg with Alexander Hamilton(also Scots-Irish) in the 1850's. The stamped mark on the jug clearly says. F. H. It has the cobalt blue design with the 3 surrounded by a sunburst or clock design(12 branches) There are droppings as well. We believe this crock is from PA or NY as it came through a family that migrated from north central PA. It measures 8 ¾” in diameter. It stands 12” tall. It is in pretty good shape though there is a crack that runs from the front around to the back side. It was caused from bad storage in a garage. The last time tested. It held water. I did not test it now as I did not want moisture in it for shipment due to the cold temperatures throughout the nation. There is a small glaze nick on the outer side of the lip as shown. It has the cobalt blue design with the 3 and what looks like a butterfly. Dragonfly, or bee. We believe this crock is from PA or NY as it came through a family that migrated from north central PA. It measures 9 ½” in diameter at the top and it flares to 10” on the bottom. It stands 10” tall. It is in near mint shape… there is a chipped area on one of the applied handles and there is a very shallow dip along the inner top rim. Uncertain if the rim issue is a chip or a manufacturing issue. I TOOK IT OUT WEST AND IT IS READY TO GO EAST AGAIN 1861 Mr. John W. Cowden. Purchased the Beaty Estate at 850 Herr Street in Harrisburg. He then opened the J.W. Cowden Stoneware Company. 1863 During the height of the Civil War. Master potter Isaac J. Wilcox partnered with John W. Cowden. The company was re-branded as Cowden& Wilcox. Wilcox was the master potter who created the intricate designs of doves and'Man in the Moon' ... moreartwork that is in tremendous demand today. 1872 John Cowden passed away and our company's operation was assumed by his son. Frederick H. Cowden. 1887 F. H. Cowden transitioned into the manufacturing of fire brick and terracotta pipe. Stoneware made during these years was marked F.H. Cowden. The name. Cowden& Wilcox, and the stoneware produced in Harrisburg, the capital city of Pennsylvania, is among the most highly collected stoneware in the nation. BOTTOM BASE DIAMETER IS 7" JUG IS NICE CONDITION, ONLY DEFECT I SAW IS IN THE LAST PICTURE, SMALL SURFACE CHIP, GLAZE CHIP IT APPEARS. COUPLE WHITE PAINT DRIPS AND AGE OR BEAUTY SPOTS. Up for auction is a very nice jug in Ex condition. No cracks one factory indentation on top of the spout, some fry in cobalt, some factory indentations, and marks around bottom, all appear to be factory. Just a very nice jug. Normal ware and tear. This is a nice old whiskey jug. its labeled Casey Bros. Scranton. Pa. this is from my families personal treasures, and has been around the house for a long time.
