Antique Stoneware Salt Glazed Miniature American Pottery Jug Applied Handle
Up for auction is an antique stoneware saltglazed jug recently found at auction in northern Indiana. It is found in good used condition. It has a small applied handle in the back large enough for one finger. It measures approx. 6 1/2" with a base diameter of approx. 4 1/2" in size. The opening is approx 1" The only condition issue to report is a small hairline crack in the back which does not go through to the interior. See photo 7. There are also some stain marks which should clean up without much effort. It is not signed and appears more southern than northern American pottery. A nice addition to one's collection. There is is some wear to the top of the spout and a chip on the inside front of the spout. There is an imperfection in the glazing in the neck(front) That is a rough spot, where the brown glazing did not take) There is a hairline crack in the glazing on top and side of the handle(can be seen under a magnifying glass) Handle is solid. It looks like it has some age to it and there is a lot of crazing. I don't know if it originally contained shave lotion or not. The inside of the jug looks like it is glazed and is a brown color. There is one chip on the bottom of the jug near the edge(please see photo) it looks like it is an old chip to me. It looks like ... morethere is a small chip on the top of the opening of the jug but the brown color and glaze cover this chip so I think the chip may have happened when this jug was originally being made. This jug had a piece of the old cork inside when I purchased it(it came from an Estate Sale) I was able to turn the jug over and get the cork out. The cork will be included but it is very brittle and falling apart. There is crazing on the jug and it looks like it could use a good cleaning. Other than that. This miniature pitcher or milk jug was made by and is marked on the bottom; Georgia Art. I think it would have the word pottery on it. If there was room, but this is just a guess. The glaze on this piece is a shiny dark brown. The handle is nicely applied to the body of the jug. This small piece is just over 2 inches high. I do not know when this piece was made, I have had it for 15 or 20 years. I buy many items from estates, so it could be quite old. I would guess that it is from the mid 1900's. No chips or cracks. It weighs 13 ounces. I purchased this miniature jug at an Estate Sale and I don't know how old it is but it does look like it has some age to it. It looks like there is a cork stuck inside the jug along with some small pieces of paper/foil. I don't see any chips or cracks and I can see a little bit of crazing near the bottom. The lower part of the jug looks ... morelike a tan color and the upper area is a dark brown color. The tan color looks like it has some swirls of lighter tan colors. I lightly cleaned the jug with a little bit of water on a cloth. It does look like it could use a good cleaning. There is a little bit of a pink color on the section between the brown and tan colored areas; I don't know if it is a stain or not. This little Whiskey Jug will make a nice display piece! Miniature Scratch Jug with AL SMITH
It is 3 1/2" tall and the base is 2 1/4" in diameter. Great, rich color. The only detractor is an inside the mouth chip, not seen when displayed on the Smith side. It came from Savannah. GA and I don't know much more than that. There was a NY govenor in the early 20's named Al Smith, but this jug could be earlier than that. Not sure if there was a potter by that name in the South, could be.
