1796 Papal States Vatican coin Baiocchi DVE E Mezzo Romani St Peter Pope Pius VI
A really cool coin. I have another that i'm giving to my daughter. This coin weighs 16.3 grams and has really nice patina. Fans of old money appreciate. The photos have a hard time capturing the patina. It's kind of between the lighter photos and the darker ones. It has a rather pleasing unevenness to it that gives it old world charm. I'll be listing much of my old world coins this week so check back in to see what i'm offering. Check out my!

Which was at that time the second largest city in the Papal States. He was created Cardinal-Priest of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme on 10 May 1728. He was elected Pope in 1740. The conclave which elected him had lasted six months; he is alleged to have said to the cardinals: If you wish to elect a saint. Choose Gotti; a statesman, Aldrovandi; a donkey, elect me" in Italy the donkey symbolizes ignorance; it can also represent stubborn faithfulness) His Papacy began in a time of great difficulties, chiefly caused by the disputes between Catholic rulers and the Papacy about governmental demands to nominate bishops rather than leaving the appointment to the Church. He managed to overcome most of these problems— the Holy See's disputes with the Kingdom of Naples, Sardinia, Spain, Venice, and Austria were settled. He had a very active papacy. Reforming the education of priests, the calendar of feasts of the Church, and many papal institutions. Perhaps the most important act of Benedict XIV's pontificate was the promulgation of his famous laws about missions

16-17Th Century Papal States / Vatican Bezzo Unknown Medieval Pope Innocent
The Renaissance of the 12th century brought wealth and economic sophistication. But Venetians continued to use the badly debased remnants of the coinage system introduced by Charlemagne. Venice struck silver pennies(called denari in Italian) based on the coinage of Verona, which contained less than half a gram of 25% fine silver. Domestic transactions predominantly used these coins or their Veronese counterparts. About 1180, however, Verona modified its coinage, upsetting this practice. For foreign trade, Venetian merchants favored Byzantine coinage or coins of the crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem. Saladin’s conquest of Jerusalem in 1187 and the progressing debasement of the Byzantine aspron trachy, however, made this less viable. Elsewhere in Western Europe the situation was similar. A few efforts were made to reverse the decline of the Carolingian ... morepenny which had been their currency for four hundred years. In Lombardy, Frederick Barbarossa struck denari imperiali at double the weight of the pennies of Milan. The consistent fineness of the English sterling, or short cross penny, which Henry II introduced in 1180 made it a popular trading currency in Northern Europe. But it remained for Doge Enrico Dandolo of Venice to make the decisive breakthrough with a higher denomination coin of fine silver called a grosso. These coins had two advantages over the old pennies. First, minting and handling costs were reduced by substituting one large coin for tens of smaller ones. Second, the purity of their silver made them acceptable outside of Venice
