Distinguished as an effective diplomat. He was elected to the papacy as a compromise candidate. As Pope he made only reluctant and short-lived attempts at reform, mostly devoting himself to a life of personal pleasure. His reputation, and that of the Catholic Church, were greatly harmed by his scandal-ridden relationship with his adopted nephew. At the start of his reign Julius had desired seriously to bring about a reform of the Catholic Church and to reconvene the Council of Trent. But very little was actually achieved during his five years in office. In 1551, at the request of Emperor Charles V, he consented to the reopening of the council of Trent and entered into a league against the duke of Parma and Henry II of France(1547–59) but soon afterwards made terms with his enemies and suspended the meetings of the council(1553) Julius increasingly contented himself with Italian politics and retired to his luxurious palace at the Villa Giulia. Which he had built for himself close to the Porta del Popolo. From there he passed the time in comfort, emerging from time to time to make timid efforts to reform the Churc

And had as secretary Niccolò Alamanni. Paul's insistence of ecclesiastical ... morejurisdiction led to a number of quarrels between the Church and the secular governments of various states. Notably Venice, where patricians, such as Ermolao Barbaro(1548–1622) of the noble Barbaro family, argued in favor of the exemption of the clergy from the jurisdiction of the civil courts. Venice passed two laws obnoxious to Paul, one forbidding the alienation of real estate in favour of the clergy, the second demanding approval of the civil power for the building of new churches(in essence, a Venetian stance that the powers of the church must remain separate from those of the state) Two priests charged by the Venetian state with cruelty, wholesale poisoning, murder and licentiousness, were arrested by the Senate and put in dungeons for trial. Having been found guilty, they were committed to prison. Pope Paul insisted that they be released to the Church. The Pope demanded the release of the priests as not being amenable to the secular law. When this was refused. The Pope threatened an interdict on account of the property laws and the imprisonment of ecclesiastics, which threat was presented to the Senate on Christmas 1605. The Venetian position was ably defended by a canon l

His skill in the conduct of a mission to the court of Naples won him the esteem of Pope Benedict XIV(1740–58) who appointed him one of his secretaries, 1753, and canon of St Peter's. In 1758, putting an end to an engagement to be married(Pastor 1952) he was ordained priest, and in 1766 appointed treasurer of the camera apostolica by Pope Clement XIII(1758–69) Those who suffered under his conscientious economies cunningly convinced Pope Clement XIV(1769–74) to make him Cardinal-Priest of Sant'Onofrio on 26 April 1773– a promotion which rendered him, for a time, innocuous. In the four months' conclave which followed the death of Clement XIV Spain, France and Portugal at length dropped their objection to Braschi, who was after all one of the more moderate opponents of the anti-Jesuit policy of the previous Pope, and he was elected to the Holy See on 15 February 1775, taking the name of Pius VI. In 1796 French Republican troops under the command of Napoleon Bonaparte invaded Italy. Defeated the papal troops and occupied Ancona and Loreto. Pius VI sued for peace, which

At the papal conclave following the death of Pope Gregory XV, Barberini was chosen as Gregory's successor and took the name Urban VIII. Upon Pope Urban's election. Given name Giovanni Vincenzo Antonio Ganganelli, Roman Catholic Pope from 1769 to 1774, son of a physician of St. Arcangelo, near Rimini, was born on the 31st of October 1705, entered the Franciscan order at the age of seventeen, and became a teacher ... moreof theology and philosophy. As regent of the college of S. Bonaventura, Rome, he came under the notice of Benedict XIV, who conceived a high opinion of his talents and made him consulter of the Inquisition. Upon the recommendation of Ricci, general of the Jesuits, Pope Clement XIII made him a cardinal; but, owing to his disapproval of the pope's policy, he found himself out of favor and without influence. The conclave following the death of Clement XIII was the most momentous of at least two centuries. The fate of the Jesuits hung in the balance; and the Bourbon princes were determined to have a pope subservient to their hostile designs. The struggle was prolonged three months. At length, on the 19th of May 1769, Ganganelli was chosen, not as a declared enemy of the Jesuits, but as being least objectionable to each of the contending factions. The charge of simony was inspired by Jesuit hatred; there is absolutely no evidence that Ganganelli pledged himself to suppress the order. The outlook for the papacy was dark; Portugal was talking of a patriarchate; France held Avignon; Naples held Ponte Corvo and Benevento; Spain was ill-affected; Parma. Defiant; Venice,

Innocent XI was frugal in matters of governing the Papal States, from dress to leading a life with Christian values. He abolished sinecures and pushed for greater simplicity in preaching as well as greater reverence in worship- requesting this of both the clergy and faithful.
