Quite scarce Five Baiocchi from the Papal States in Italy. It was struck at the Rome Mint and dated 1797 in the very year the northern Papal States were occupied by French troops and forever removed from Papal authority. The coin was struck under the authority of Pope Pius VI(born Giovanni Angelo Braschi) who was Pontifex Maximus from February 15. 1775 until his death on August 29, 1799. Pius VI was Pope during the tumultuous years of the French Revolution. He condemned the 1791 establishment of a state church in France. In 1797 the Papal State lost all its northern provinces to French supported popular republics. In early 1798 Pope Pius was taken into French custody and died at Valence. Still ... morea captive.
