Hellenistic Greek Miniature Oil Lamp CULTURE/ REGION OF ORIGIN: Eastern Mediterranean. DATE: Late Hellenistic Period. 1st Century BCE. DIMENSIONS: 4.2 cm(1.65 in. long. DESCRIPTION: Intact. A miniature wheel made ceramic oil lamp of late Hellenistic form. The simple form includes a wick hole at the tip. A circular fill hole inside a slightly raised disc in the upper center of the body and a plain flat base. The lamp is formed from fine grained reddish brown clay. The surfaces are clean with only minimal traces of soil encrustation.Probably intended solely for funerary use. PROVENANCE: Ex UK private collection through 2005. The dove is significant to Ancient Greek culture in many respects. According to one legend. Zeus was raised by doves. They were the sacred aniimals of the love goddess Aphrodite, to whom these pieces may have been dedicated.
