What lapis lazuli, carnelian, and turquoise was to the cultures of the ancient Mediterranean and Mesopotamia, including the Greeks, Egyptians, Romans, Sumerians, and Babylonians; jade was to the ancient Chinese. It was the gemstone of gemstones, it’s name synonymous with“gold” in other languages. Good as gold” the golden age” such expressions would have used the word“yu” for jade, rather than the word gold. This pendant seems to have two“faces” to it. With the point(the narrow end) on the bottom it seems to be a stylized face. Lost to legs, cracks, chips, overall condition good. Thank you and please view my other items. BACKGROUND Komaland is located south of Burkina Faso border in Northern Ghana. In the valleys between Sisilli and the Kulpawan rivers. The people of Komaland are mainly farmers, growing corn, millet, onions, tomatoes, and various types of nuts. Until 1985 very little was known about this mysterious culture. The previous 20 years farmers have found terracottas in the ground, but knew nothing of their history. Their value was soon recognized by scholars. In March and April of 1985 a permit was issued to excavate the Komaland site. Since then more information about this unique culture has filtered out. The present-day village is built around and on numerous archaeological sites. Many of the pieces found today and in the past 30 years were found in burial mounds; the mounds contained terracotta figures, domestic pottery, milling stones, pottery discs, iron ornaments, copper ornaments, iron implements and stone axes. A custom base is included with this piece. It is important to properly exhibit a beautiful piece of art. The splendor of the piece cannot be fully revealed without a correct display. Custom bases can cost a minimum of thirty and up to several hundred dollars depending on its complexity and size. It is very difficult to locate a good stand maker regardless of price. But fortunately this piece will be appropriately displayed and ready for you and your guests’ enjoyment. Painter Fred U

Free Shipping Location: Saint Clair Shores, United States This is an exquisite. 100% authentic, Tong(Tang) Dynasty straw-glazed. Terra-cotta Horse and Rider, dating to between 618-906 AD. This beautiful sculpture ... moreis painted in lovely earthy tones of beige, tans, and greens with the Riders face and head using dark browns, blacks, red and a pinkish hue. The colors are original and intact with a lustrous glaze over the entire piece with the exception of the head and a small portion of the base. The"General" as I like to respectfully call him is 12.75 inches high as he proudly sits atop his war horse which is nearly 12 inches long. These figures. Both original and intact, sit stoically upon a sturdy Terra-cotta base. This wonderful sculpture is aesthetically pleasing and quite realistic as a nod to the artist's strong ability to realistically capture his subjects. It has full C.O.A. from it's professional laboratory testing in 2001 which was performed by Phyllis Hsia of Oxford Authentication South East Asia via a Thermoluminescence Analysis. In this test two small samples were taken from the figure and using standard methods and techniques it was estimated that the last date of firing was: between 900 and 1500 years ago. It has been painstakingly and professionally repaired whereas the base had been severed a one time and then reattached. Showing no fluorescence under UV lighting(a very high quality repair) Please see the pictures for more detail. I am completely committed to my 100% Feedback score and your utter satisfaction. This item will be packaged with the utmost care and delivered secure and in an expeditious manner. If this piece shows up and there is damage or you are unhappy contact me and we will work something out until you are satisfied. As always thanks for looking and feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. History/Provenance. The first use of horses in warfare occurred over 5.000 years ago. All lots illustrated ... morein color. Excellent condition. Here is what Sotheby's had to say about its sale: This season’s Antiquities auction will include a variety of examples of Egyptian, Classical and Western Asiatic material. We are pleased to offer, from the Estate of Jan Mitchell, a rare and complete Greek marble grave stele from the mid to late 4th century B.C. showing a young boy with his dog, found in Athens in 1877. Three Greek pottery vases to be offered from this estate were once the property of William Randolph Hearst; one comes originally from George Waddington(1793-1869) Dean of Durham Cathedral, one from Alfred Bourguignon, the late 19th century Neapolitan collector and dealer, and one from the Ruesch Collection dispersed in Switzerland in 1936. The sale also includes a draped marble figure of a muse holding a lyre, which came to light in 1891 on the slopes of Mount Helikon. Among other fine examples of Roman marble sculpture is a long-lost almost life-size figure of Aphrodite, from the collection of the Regency collector and designer Thomas Hope, a newly rediscovered figure of Artemis of the Dresden Type, unearthed and published in the 1880s with a figure of Kybele, also in the sale, and a figure of Sophocles once at Marbury Hall and acquired by James Hugh Fitz-Barry from Thomas Jenkins in the 1770s. The highlight of the Egyptian section is a complete limestone block statue of a transport official named Karo, who worked at the court of King Rameses III; once in the private museum of a convent in Vienna, a gift made to the congregation in the 19th century, it was last sold in these room in 1998. Among the gems of the sale are a small Predynastic stone vessel of unusual and pleasing shape, and a slender Greek marble wing with remains of red pigment. Powered by The free listing tool. ATTRIBUTION: Roman Provincial Moesia. First Century A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Length: 79 millimeters(3 1/8 inches) Width: 69 millimeters(2 5/8 inches) Height: 22 millimeters(7/8 inch) CONDITION: Good integrity. All original with no repairs. Some very hard and stubborn alkaline soil deposits inside of bowl. Moderate wear around fill hole consistent with use in the ancient world. DETAIL: This is a well preserved terracotta oil lamp dated to the first century A.D. Its origin is Roman Provincial Moseia. Present-day Bulgaria. The top surface of the oil lamp portrays an impressed braided pattern around the rim of the fill hole, a little indistinct, but basically a geometric pattern of a chain of small rectangles. There’s also a trademark of some sort on the underside surface of the pedestal. It too is a bit indistinct, but it seems to be a circle with a two characters inside the circle. It’s not possible really to determine whether they might have been letters or merely figures. But clearly the pedestal contains a trademark. It was not uncommon for the artisans who produced these pieces to leave some sort of“trade mark” on the underside of the pedestal so as to identify it as their produce. The style is very characteristic of the lamps manufactured for domestic use in the Roman Provinces. As can be seen the design elements of the vessel are even after the passage of almost 2.000 years, by and large intact intact. Though by no means rare, it is uncommon to find such a nice design in such a well-preserved state– whole and relatively intact with no major breakage or repairs. The vessel was of course buried for somewhere around two thousand years in the soil. As a consequence of this prolonged burial there are some

Greek Terracotta Nude Eileithyia (Goddess of Childbirth) Statue Figure 8in
I listed this terracotta a few days ago in the Antiquities- Roman catagory for $395. My thought was that the figure represents Venus and was either from Roman Asia Minor or Roman Egypt. A kind ebayer then contacted me and offered the information that the figure actually represents Eileithya. The Greek Goddess of childbirth(the cult of Eileithya originated on Crete and then spread throughout the Greek and eventually Roman worlds. With this information I ended the listing early in order to conduct more research. I found the following: A similar figure to this one appeared on ebay.uk a while ago which the dealer listed as 4th Century BC. There exists another example in the archaelogical museum at Paestum which dates to c500- c450BC and is clearly of high classical style. The details among these three differ. Though the general form and composition ... moreis the same. This figure may be a terracotta votive of late Classical, Hellenistic, or even Roman origin which was based upon a Classical period cult statue dedicated to Eileithya. There is also the possibility that this statue is a grand tour copy, or even a modern copy. Eilithia holds her robe open to reveal her nude body and sculpturally engage the surrounding space. Children cling to her from behind each shoulder. The statue stands approx. 8 1/4in. It is intact and unrepaired with a few minor chips and a larger loss to the figure's hair. There is a small amount of wear to the details and scattered surface deposits along with scattered minor pitting to the surface. From a private CT collection. Said to have been formed in the 1920's. Offered with a $99 opening bid and no reserve as grand tour or modern. I will let ebay experts decide it's exact origins. Please Read Before Bidding: 1) Due to a rash of low feedback bidder non-payers I now require that all bidders with feedback scores of less than 10 contact me before bidding. I will cancel all bids placed by those who do not. 2) International Buyers: shipping for items weighing less that 4lbs. with a value bel

ANCIENT GREEK TERRACOTTA FIGURE OF A WOMAN TANAGRAS (?)
Normal 0 ANCIENT GREEK TERRACOTTA FIGURE OF A WOMAN TANAGRAS( I’m not experienced in this kind of art. This piece got into my hands incidentally without any authentication papers. And I am not sure about its age and/or origin. Hope that you as a collector would know better than me. On the personal note, I’m always very careful and have NEVER sold a fake. I cannot be a pro in every period/ artist and an honest mistake is always possible. Finally, if you find any discrepancy after you buy the item, your money back is guaranteed! Terracotta figurine depicts a woman standing with the weight on her right leg. Figure is tightly wrapped in a himation over a floor-length chiton. Her head is turned slightly to her right. Her arms crossed on her chest underneath the himation. It measures about 7 1/4” tall. The base measures 2 3/8” X 1 3/4” There is ... morea vent cut in the reverse side of the figurine. Remains of pink paint on her face and light red and blue on the himation. The clay around her neck is chipped. Possibly her head was veiled by himation. And after a close inspection I found a hairline crack on inside surface of the figurine, close to the base, but the clay is intact. P.S. I found information on-line about the similar figurines: Tanagras” are named after the site in Boeotia. Central Greece, where thousands of similar figures were unearthed in the early 1870s. Figures of men, children and comic actors were also found at Tanagra, but standing female figures are the most numerous. The chief appeal of Tanagra figures lies in their exceptional artistic quality usually considered to be the finest of all Greek figurines. Most Tanagra figures are mold-made and sometimes have a vent cut in the back to ensure the even distribution of heat during the firing. After firing. The figure was coated in a white slip, often a solution of chalk or white clay, and then colors were added on top. The artists who produced these figures were known as coroplasts, literally“modelers of girls” Dear Buyer, Your bid is a commitment. Pl

Ancient Greek Terracotta Pottery Figure of Hermes - 300 BC
An ancient Greek terracotta figure of Hermes. Dating to 300– 200 BC. Staring wistfully out into the distance. The god is shown nude, the lower legs are crossed and he wears only a chlamys draped across his left shoulder. He perches on the edge of a rocky outcrop, with the left hand clinging to the side and the other clutching his distinctive leather purse. The style was almost certainly inspired by an even older original by Lysippos, a later copy of which Though a beautifully tender piece of Greek art. This wonderful little sculpture hides a deeper story. Often these figures were used as religious offerings to the gods they portrayed; as the god of travel, commerce and the secret wisdoms(amongst many others) we can only guess at what the ancient Greek who deposited this artefact was seeking from Hermes. Please note that this piece has been ... morethermoluminescence tested and found to date to the Hellenistic period. The new buyer will be provided with all relevant certification. Height: 4 inches. Condition: Very good. Unrestored. Provenance: Formerly in the collection of Madame Briand. Brittany, France, acquired 1960s.
