We have since found out through an online appraisal company that ... moreis is an Antique Drop Front Writing Desk" from around 1900-1915. But it will really always be"Grandpa's writing desk" Unfortunately my seller is downsizing their home and grandpa's desk needs to find a new place to go. It is a lovely little piece measuring 39" tall. 27" across and 15" deep. It is in nice condition given it's age, but it does have a small chip out of the front right corner post. You can see it in the photos. The interior is plain with no shelves, drawers or cubbies. The information that I received from the appraisal company is as follows: The drop front oak(not quarter-sawn oak) writing desk is a Mission style Arts and Crafts desk; there is a keyhole in the top of the fall front and a small gallery or backplate on the top back of the desk. There is an"H" stretcher in the middle bottom of the desk and a vertical"X" stretcher on each bottom side of the desk; the legs are quadrant legs; there is one drawer with round brass pulls beneath the fall front. I would date the desk C. 1900-1915; the value would be between $625.00 and $700.00 in today's retail market. Due to the size of this item it will not be available for shipping. IT IS SIGNED AND OLD VINTAGE AND IS STILL IN FAIRLY GOOD CONDITION AND I HAVE USED IT IN MY DEN FOR A FEW YEARS AND NOW NEED TO SELL. THE INSIDE DRAWER IS SIGNED AND I GUARNTEE IT TO BE AN ORIGINAL SIGNED PIECE. AS PICTURES SHOW IT HAS BEEN RAISED AND HAS 4 1/2 IN. LEG EXTENSIONS MAKING THE DESK 32 1/2 HIGH. THEY UNSCREW WITH NO DAMAGE. OBVIOUSLY AS THEY HAD 3/4 IN BEDS BACK THEN THAT PEOPLE WERE SMALLER SO THIS HELPS MAKE IT MORE FOR MODERN USE. THE TOP HAS 2 SPLITS AS PICTURES SHOW THAT ARE THERE BUT THE DESK STILL LOOKS GOOD AND HAS BEEN USED LIKE IT IS. Desk is stored indoors but photos were taken while moving the desk. Antique Mission Oak Library Desk I can find no markings on this except a#17 in pencil in the drawer slide and a# 17 in pencil in the drawer. I assume they did this so they would know which drawer went with which desk, and does not allude to who made the desk. I got this from my wife's uncles estate. He was 96 when he passed and he got this desk from his parents estate in Spokane Wa. when they passed. It is made from solid oak and on the ends of the top board you can see that the top is tongue and grooved. Very hard to show in the pictures. I don't know tiger oak from quarter sawn oak so you be the judge. There is some what appears to be grey paint on one corner of the top. please see pictures. Someone drove 2 finish nails about 2' long into the top of one of the legs. One leg has a chip out of it at the bottom about the size of ... morea quarter and another leg has a little grey paint at the bottom of one side. See pictures. I have made no attempt to repair. Clean or restore the finish on this desk, it is in the condition it was given me in. All in all this desk is in great vintage condition given its age.
