Beautiful folk art cross with a hidden compartment in a box at the center. I believe it may be from Mexico.But I am not certain of this. It measures 9 1/2 by 7" and the box,which may be silver,is 1 3/8" The cross is black clay or ceramic I believe,but it is hard like stone. It is inlaid throughout and the box also has a stone. The box,which is empty,could have been made to hold a relic or other religious object. The condition is excellent,although the box is tarnished. I'll leave the cleaning of that to discretion of the buyer. It is unique.

This is a vintage Catholic Reliquary Crucifix with cloth relics of various saints. Including one of Pope Pius X, in very good condition. It’s metal with black wood inserts behind the Christ Figure. The metal. Wood, Figure and Titulus Crucis(INRI plaque above Figure) all show ware consistent with its age. There are numerous tiny hairline scratches thoughout the surface. They may not all be noticeable in the photos due to the reflective surface. Also some tarnish and tiny nicks. Inside are relics of six individuals under paper labels. The labels read as follows: Conradi a… may have more letters after the“a” but if so. They are not in view) Viktoriae Ursula Benedicti… may have more letters. Not in view) Pii Pp. X. Pope Pius X) Plazidi M… may have more letters. Not in view) The total height. Including the screw at the bottom, is a little under ... more3 3/8 inches. Without the screw, it’s about 3 inches. It’s about 1 ½ inches wide. The relics themselves. Under each paper label, are all tiny fragments of white, woven cloth that would have been blessed in the name of the saint, Pope, etc. mounted in gold-gilt paper bezels. Around these are decorative gold-gilt paper“buttons” as well as beads and paste“stones” in clear and red, mounted in the same type of gilt bezels as the relics. These are all visible in the photos so please look closely as the photos are part of the description. The backing material behind it all is a red cloth. In the center is a scalloped-edge bezel, gold-gilt paper, filled with wax. There may have been something stuck on top of the wax at some time but it is now missing. The screw that holds the Crucifix closed at the bottom is a little bent(see photo) but it doesn’t interfere with screwing/unscrewing it. It is unmarked. Most of these. BEAUTIFUL cross with Jesus that is really old vintage antique- The item has dinks& flaws-I got this in the city well over 40-45 years ago- I was told at the time it was from the 1800's and made by Nuns& worn by a Priest- it has many Saints named in the actual Relic as you can see from the photo. True Cross Relic Reliquary set in Baroque circa 1690-1710 Silver Case
The Most Holy Wood of the Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ set in an antique Baroque Sterling Silver Case with rare glass back. The case being circa 1690-1710. The wax seal and tamper proof threads are unbroken and present. There are two splinters of the cross set in a larger gold thread cross. The cross is surrounded by gold threads woven into a pattern to fill the case on hand woven red cloth which serves as the overall background. The cross wood is set on a very fine hand woven white textile. Likely linen. The overall red background textile has faded over time as the cross relic was placed in the case and sealed over 300 years ago. The cross is set on a gold thread embroidered hill. Most likely this piece was worn often at some time during history as the case design and top findings are for a chain. Another indication of this being worn ... moreis the rare glass backing so that the seal is visible at all times whenever it would be turned over. The sterling silver case measures 2 5/8” inches high by 1 5/16” inches wide. The silver is fully tested and is.925 Sterling. The silver has a fine old patina that comes from age. The case was lightly cleaned to maintain its distinct look. The glass is hand cut and hand beveled at the edge. The front glass is in great condition. The back side glass has stress cracks in it. The glass is still solid and well though it has the cracks. Fine piece for gentle wearing or for an altar. I have owned with piece for over 20 years and it has given me great comfort. The owner before me acquired it I believe in the late 1940’s or early 1950’s. I got it as the center piece of a well loved collection of other relics from his estate. IT SEEMS THERE IS CONFUSION AS TO THE ORIGINS OF THIS TYPE OF CROSS IN PARTICULAR THE GEOMETRIC INLAID PEARL DECORATION SHOWS STRONG STYLISTIC SIMILARITIES BETWEEN THE MIDDLE EAST AND THE INDIAN SUB-CONTINENT. IT HAS BEEN WRITTEN THAT THESE PIECES WERE EARLY PILGRIMAGE SOUVENIRS PRODUCED IN JERUSALEM BY SYRIAN CRAFTSMAN UNDER THE DIRECTION OF FRANCISCAN MONKS.
