The ... morenewel post stands almost 5' high. It is approximately 57" from floor to top of finial. It is in three pieces, a square base with a rounded stand, the rounded post and the top finial. The largest part of the square base is approximately 17.75"x17.75" There are threaded rods on the inside that connect the base and post together, the finial sits on top. There are specks of white paint around the newel post. I will let the buyer decide how to remove it. This newel post is meant to be at the bottom of a staircase. The railing is 12' long and approximately 5.5" wide. It is also made of solid mahogany. The bottom of the railing mounts flush onto the newel post. The top of the railing has a hump back that turns into a corner and mounts to the wall. There are a few places where the edges on the bottom have partially broken off. Stately Pair of Antique Solid Oak Newel Posts, c. 1880 NNP55
Handsome pair of antique newel posts crafted of solid oak and dating from approximately 1880. The square post body is topped with a simple domed newel post cap and features a unique silhouette that tapers in the center. Chamfered edges with reeded and grooved detailing compliment the top and the base. Unlike boxed newel posts that are hollow in the middle. These posts are solid all the way through. The newel has been painted white and is in good antique condition with some chips and wear as shown. The newel posts measure 5-7/8” wide and 61-1/2” tall. Description This is a nice pair that was salvaged from a Philadelphia Victorian Home. They are made of chestnut and are currently painted white. They have fluted shafts and decorative moldings. They are not notched for the step. One has its original cap which is cracked and the other is missing the cap and molding just below it. It measures 37.5 without the cap. 6.5 square at the base and 5 inches square at the shaft. Overall they are in good condition. There are misc. scratches and dings as they are antique. They could use a good cleaning. One has an uneven base and leans. It will need to be trimmed to be straight. Please look at the pictures carefully. Ref: 71263 Shipping. I bought this antique railing over 40 years ago at an antique store- used part of it as a room divider until a redecoration. I believe the wood is either oak or walnut and that it is well over 100 years old. All parts seem to be from one unit from long ago. 1. the main part which I used consists of a railing which is 5' 10" long with 13 nice matching spindles and a matching newel post at the end which is 39 inches high and 5" square 2. a second matching newel post would be used at a corner- see pictures 3. another matching railing which is 4' 8" with a curve at the end 4. a bunch of spindles.
