But I am having a really hard time deciphering it, it appears to be someone's name and then a place in New York. The trunk does have railroad transportation labels on both sides of the trunk. The trunk does have some wear as you can see, original front lock hardware is missing and it does have surface loss. Some of the paint has alligatored a bit on the sides as you can see from the photos. Trunk measures 35.25 inches wide by 17.25 inches deep by 17 inches tall. It has labels for New York Central Railroad and Westcott express one side and the other side has a very partial label and from what I can tell it is in French. The front of the trunk may read Hauve(France)New York. I think this is a really nice piece, I think it has a good folk art look to it and great to find it with original green paint. Up for auction an antique vintage Norwegian I mmigrant T runk dated 1820. It came from a Norwegian farm settlement in the Madison. Wisconsin area. This is beautifully Rosemaled trunk from the very early period of Norwegian pioneering i mmigration to North America. Front and both sides are elaborated hand painted with floral motifs. T he lock is period to the time. As would be the nails and wooden pegs used. No key for the lock though. The trunk is solidly built with the hand forged metal plates reinforc ing sides and top. Inside is relatively clean- no major issues- wood work has stood test of times. A few scuff marks here and there. As would be normal for a trunk of this age. A metal lock and metal strap hinges. It has dovetail corners and a storage compartment inside the trunk. It is in good condition but does have some rough spots. Including some bug holes, and some end boards that have dried and warped a bit on the domed lid. It has its original paint featuring grain painted designs. This is 19th century hand dovetailed domed top pine chest with old gray paint and traces of red. The name"Louis Becher" is painted on the side and top. The chest is a really nice medium size(39.5"W. 17"H, 18"D) it could be placed on a large table or on the floor. The exterior shows prolonged signs of use, but the interior is extremely clean. The hardware is all original but there is a missing clasp on the lock. It is very solid, the hinges work well, and it is otherwise completely functional. Wide pine boards are joined with hand cut dovetails. The faux grain painted finish is original and very well preserved with a little wear for character. Wrought iron handles and hinges are also original. The lock is missing. Inside this charming antique furniture is a small compartment and tiny drawers for treasures. I regret that I do not know the history of this piece. I would estimate that it dates from the first 1/2 of the 19th Century or possibly earlier. Those possessing more knowledge than I of wood and iron working would have a better idea. Country of original is also an unknown as I have assumed this to be an early. Small immigrant chest or possibly that of a child. It is 15 3/8” tall, 18 3/4” wide, and 12 3/4” deep. The finish appears to be original. This trunk is one of the nicest I have had the chance to sell. O verall condition of trunk is good. Still has all the original hardware. The tray that comes with this is not original, it is a handmade cedar tray. Tray is a nice addition to this trunk as it is cedar and will prevent moth damage. I am listing some very rare and unique antiques from my personal collection. This is a 100% all original condition wooden trunk. An antique dealer told me the handles and primitive metal work could date this trunk to the mid 1800's. It has original finish on the wood and painted on script writing. I believe it may say Thorkild L. Thorkildson. Elliott. I dont know what this means. The dealer also mentioned that this may be a very early immigrant trunk. Up for sale is a antique all wood immigrants trunk. It is a great antique trunk from the 1800's. It does show signs of aging wood cracked no lock in the front. The trunk is 44 3/4long. 24 1/4inches tall. The bottom is 18 1/4inches deep and the top is 23 1/2inches deep. It could use a good cleaning been stored for years. I will be listing this item plus other oak piece from a local estate. The owner was a refinisher. These were some of the projects that had never got done or even started. For sale is a huge 1800's immigrant steamer trunk. Best guess is German or Swiss. Has a man's name on the top, AUGUST GEUNERT. NEW YORK. I bought it in Pa. At an antique store. They said it belonged to a Doctor. In Philadelphia.They bought this and several Hepple White pieces. From his estate. It is massive. 45 inches wide,22 deep, and 25 1/2 inches tall. And weighs about 75 pounds. Has a some issues with the wood. Please see photo's. Most are the 1/4 inch trim that surrounds. The lid base. A very easy fix for a carpenter. All the straps are present and in great shape with only the hinge. Front pieces altered. The lock plate is 6 3/4 by 4 inches in great. Condition.I do not have the key. This lock was way ahead of it's time. There is one like this on ebay now for $167.Even they have value. I can find no markings but all metal ... morewas hand forged and smithed. No screws. All rivet and hand pounded straps. The common screw was not mass produced until around 1800. I do not know how to age this chest but. Antique 1856 Swedish Immigrant Trunk
This is a beautiful piece of American History. When Immigrants would come from other countries to make a home in America. They would often bring all of their belongings in just one trunk. Don't forget.we are quite spoiled today, unlike us, they could actually fit what they needed to live in just one trunk. This one appears to be Swedish judging by the folk art work which includes flowers and foliage. On the front of the trunk is a clue to whom it originally belonged to.the initials LOS and the date of 1856. It is comprised of pine planks and hand wrought iron hardware. LOGANSPORT INDIANA 1800's IMMIGRANT TRUNK with ORIGINAL PAINT & NAME
This is a fantastic 1800's Immigrant trunk from Logansport. Indiana. It has the original paint and name on the front, KONSTANCE ANDERSEN. The hinges have been replaced on the lid but the original 2 are still screwed to the trunk. The top could be cleaned up better because sometime in it's life it had paper clued to it and there are still some traces of it that would soak off. It is 34" long, 18 1/2" deep, and 24" tall at the center. The top is slightly humpback. It has the original hand forged handles on both ends. Thanks for looking. This furniture has a beautiful old finish. Waxed and buffed, only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is needed to maintain its warm patina. The interior is very clean. This is a beautiful primitive immigrant's trunk. This is a very large trunk measuring 55"Wx32"Hx24"Deep with a curved top. It has dark green painted planks with hand stenciled flowers. Also stenciled on the front is the initials"BLD" and the date"1849" The trunk has hand forged metal straps. Handles and an original keyhole with the old fashioned metal key. While woods are not my forte` we have a consensus that this is red oak. Weighs a ton solid in construction and has aged nicely. Dates 1800-1820 possibly earlier. Came out of PA estate. All Original hardware with the exception of the is intact with the exception of a decorative plate above the lock front. You have to examine closely to see, appears a decorative element as the original lock is there no key though. There is some minor loss to some of the decorative hardware edges top and such please refer to photos. The wrought iron handles are there and solid to lift. The piece must have stood on a wall as the back is considerably darker(dirty) than the rest. 1800s Scandinavian Painted Immigrant Dowry Trunk Blanket Chest - Primitive
This"dome top" immigrant trunk from Scandinavia with folk art painting. The ironwork suggests this was a dowry chest. The family name is in script. Hand hewn of pine I believe. European furniture, useful as a blanket chest. Wrought iron hardware but missing top lock. The interior is clean and has 1 inside top tray. Length is 25 inches and 17 inches tall with a depth of 14.5 inches. This is NOT as large as many trunks but quit a wonderful size. The perfect piece to place adjacent to a chair or as a strong accent piece BUT does not dominate the space. Just a charming size. I often used the truck open to display linens. No oder. There is wear to the traditional hand painting. Akin to the famous rosemaling. The fine lines were artistically drawn and still show nicely. This is one beautiful antique oak trunk that has a date of 1838 but I think it might be older like the late 18th century just not sure. It measures 47 1/2" wide 23 1/2" deep at top. 20 3/4" deep at bottom and 28" tall not including wheels. This trunk is in Excellent condition for its age but there is a crack in side and a piece of trim missing on side also looks like a piece of an iron strap is missing at the open lid handle also someone added wheels a long time ago. The name ANNA CATRIENA JLSABEIN LANDWEHR 1838 is on the front. The iron straps are thick with a rare heart cut out design. The bottom trim has old paint hard to see looks like red and white stripes I think. Construction was done with wooden pegs and the bottom is held together with wooden dowels. 18th century Antique Blanket Chest - COLONIAL - Immigrant Dome Trunk untouched
You are bidding on a 18th century"immigrant trunk. It is in great. Original condition. The trunk dates to the 18th century. I have had two of Rhode Island's highly respected colonial antique dealers examine the chest, and both have confirmed my approximation of age. In fact, one antique furniture expert(with a Ph.D. in history) just today, after examining the trunk for 30 minutes, said it is possible that the trunk dates to the early 1700's, making it a full 300 years old. But I will err on the side of understatement, and simply say the trunk is unquestionably 18th century. The expert was very impressed with the shape and character of the hand-forged hinges. And in particular, was effusive in his excitement with regard to the quality of the hand-forged locking mechanism. It still closes with"vise-like" strength. And ... morewe both marveled at the key.which appears to be original to the locking mechanism. Can you imagine that?nearly 300 years old, and still with the probable original key. I can't go a year without losing a key. With regard to the paint: neither the two colonial America antique dealers. Nor myself, can say with absolute 100% certainty that the paint is original to the piece. Though, after examining the trunk very closely.front, back, sides, top and bottom.we could find not a thing that points to anything other than original paint. It is simply extraordinary to find a piece of this age with such deep, rich color. So I am going to err on the side of understatement, and simply say very old paint. Possibly original. With regard to the trunk's origin: Years ago. When I purchased the trunk at auction, the auctioneer had described the trunk"as found in Pennsylvania. It goes without saying, of course, you couldn’t swing a dead cat with hitting a bratwurst. I just discovered this round top trunk in undisturbed condition. It is probably from around 1850. Give or take a few years. Two things struck me right away. First, the hasp is not hinged but fixed in place. Second, the gentle round top is just fine for sitting although your guests will stay longer if you put a cushion on top. It is 38 ¾” long by 18 1/4” wide by 19” tall and weighs 46 lbs. It is made of pine. And it has a till inside. The till never had a lid. The till is divided into two sections, and there is an extra"frame" inside. This country pine immigrant trunk or chest has a slightly curved top, but still makes a picturesque coffee table. The carpenter's expertise is shown by wooden pegs instead of nails and hand cut corner dovetail joints. There is a wonderful hand wrought iron lock that still works with the key. But we have removed it because it locks automatically when the lid is closed. It is included and can be reattached if desired. Wrought iron hinges are also original. Antique 1846 Meyer Family Immigrant's Trunk.German Walnut,dovetail,forged iron. Another Bygone Antiques great find! This trunk is dated 1846 and has the name Meyer on the front. Unfortunately the first name is not legible. It is made entirely of walnut. All four sides are from a single board. There are no nails. Fasteners are all dovetails and pegs. The handles, hinges and hasp are all hand forged iron. The lighter color of the wood around the rim where the lid closes indicates that there was likely a wooden lip at this joint. There is a key hole but no lock. There is a ditty box on the left end with three tiny hidden drawers. There are some splits and cracks in the wood. You are bidding on a very rare Antique 1700's- Early 1800's Seaman's Painted Blanket Dovetailed Blanket Chest Trunk with 2 glove/ personals drawers. Very clean on the inside. Dovetailed- Hand Made nails- all original hardware and wood. I think this actually defined as a" Pennsylvania Blanket chest" Nice very early American Piece of History. This trunk has a life and it shows 300 years of use( pictured) Chest measures 29 1/2" wide x 20 1/2" tall x 19 1/2" front to back. It has been painted. No key. Antique 1800's Primitive Wood Immigrant Chest Travel Steamer Treasure Trunk with steamed original wood handles. Good condition for age. Worn and distressed from age and use with some cracks in the wood. Missing one roller wheel on bottom. Scuffs and scratches. Has decorative paper over the outer trunk and is stained and missing some of the paper. No key. Someone has added wall paper on the inside. The picture is original. There's a small typed letter that has been added as well. Trunk measures approx. 23 3/4" wide not counting the handles x 15" tall x 13 1/2" deep. Sold as is as found with no warranty's.
