This is a very old optical thread counter. The lens is in good condition and gives a clear image of the fabric. The 1/4" inch square opening makes counting thread content of any cloth simple and accurate. Just count what you see and multiply by 4 to get the threads-per-inch or thread count used in most fabric evaluations. The bezel around the lens is stamped SCHINDLER BOLTING CLOTH. I have taken alot of picture to show all the parts, it looks to be complete, but can not tell as I can't find any information as to the maker. Very rare. And large balance scale made by W&T Avery in Birmingham England. The base feet appear to be a chippendale style. Has a white porcelain shaft, broken on one side at the middle, and small hair line cracks toward the top. Petina is original, showing green on the brass and dirt/grime on the rest of the metal. The"pan" scale side is wore out along the bottom edge and starting to seperate. The"scoop" scale has a break at the claw holder. It is not completly broken through, it just is cracked. This desk is in the same condition as it was found in that store. With the exception that the missing drawer knobs were replaced. The desk includes an ink bottle receptacle, pen holder, and three compartments for letters or other small items. The desk sits in the shallow wooden base that is stained to match the desk. The desk only sits in the base. It is not attached in any way that harms the desk's integrity. The base is attached to an antique wrought-iron sewing machine stand. The top lifts for storage and has a hinged arm to hold the top open. All product decals are original and unrestored. It dates from any time from the early 1700's to 1800 as this was a very popular shape. These were used as gaming counters. But only ones with indentations, like these were used as silk winders as well by Georgian and Victorian ladies. It measures 2.12 inches(5.40cm) long. Cool antique lift top merchants desk with original J& P Coats“Best Silk Cord” decal on front. Made of solid oak with original brass pulls. Top has a receptacle for the merchants ink bottle and a pen rest is carved out of the front edge. Top lifts to wide open storage. Four accessory drawers below with cool chunky brass knobs. The writing surface is original and has a crack across the field but still is a beautiful piece. i beleive that the advertising on this piece is painted on and not a decal. I could be wrong but it does not feel like a decal. Small chips at back corners, overall light scratches and dings typical to a piece this age, nothing unsightly or detracting.
