Old Antique Home Devotions Shadow Box used in Catholic homes for the sick prayer shrine worship. This framed box is used with age and wear. The wood looks like oak. The box has a wire on the back for hanging on a wall. The exterior measures@ 12 inches x 23 inches x 3 1/2 inches. The wood shadow box has reverse painted glass front with words"Blessed Be Thy Holy Name" Behind the glass is the statue of the Mother Mary holding her dying son Jesus. Below this is a fold-out door held by a chain. On the door framed in glass is the picture of the Last Supper. Open the fold-out door, inside are two built-in metal candle holders. Vntg Antique Catholic Table Altar Shrine Cross Communion Last Rights Cabinet Box
Beautiful old table or wall altar which used to be in the old St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Covington. KY. The church opened in 1872 and was torn down in 1967, so I do not know the actual age of this item, but it has to be at least 45 years old and probably much older. This stands about 17 1/2" high and is 9 1/4" wide and overall is in pretty good condition. The front panel closes with metal hinges, which are still intact. The plastic-type material plate on the front panel door depicts an angel on each side and the 14 stations in the center. The top 2 corners of the plate have cracked apart but the tiny pieces are still attached to the panel door. The Jesus figure and larger crucifix are in good condition. The candle holders have some rust. Behind the panel door is a smaller crucifix, spoon and small plate in the satin lined ... morecompartment. The spoon and plate have some rust and corrosion, but the small cross is in very good condition. This item could use some restoration, but is still a lovely old piece as is. This is a circa 1898 antique Holy Name. Shrine Shadow Box Prayer Alter sick call box. Hand made of oak, this shrine was commonly used for"house calls" by a priest at times of sickness or death to assist the priest in delivering the Sacrament. The Holy Name Alter was also used for home devotions and was a permanent fixture in many Catholic homes. The framed box was designed to fit into a permanent recess in a wall(like a medicine cabinet) But also has a wire for wall hanging, so it could be moved where needed. Exterior frame measures about 23" tall X 13" wide X 4" deep. The two recess areas containing the sculptures and the sacraments is about 3" deep. The prayer station is large and impressive. The wood shadow box holds a reverse painted glass front"Blessed Be Thy Holy Name" and contains a chalk ware ... morestatue of Mother Mary holding the dying Jesus figure against a paper background of a church alter. Statue is about 12" tall.Painted in soft pastels and fills most of the shadow box area. This box could use some TLC to the back. It has been glued in the past. This is a circa 1900 antique Holy Name. Shrine Shadow Box Prayer Alter sick call box. Hand made of oak, this shrine was commonly used for"house calls" by a priest at times of sickness or death to assist the priest in delivering the Sacrament. The Holy Name Alter was also used for home devotions and was a permanent fixture in many Catholic homes. The framed box was designed to fit into a permanent recess in a wall(like a medicine cabinet) But also has a wire for wall hanging, so it could be moved where needed. Exterior frame measures about 23" tall X 13" wide X 4" deep. The two recess areas containing the sculptures and the sacraments is about 3" deep. The prayer station is large and impressive. The lower box area contains a fold down alter platform held with chain and a latch and features 2 built-in decorative ... moremetal candle holders on each side of the alter. The lower alter compartment would hold a silver dish. A wood crucifix( Not included) The metal detachable candle holders are missing, and candles, or instructions are not included. The wood shadow box holds a reverse painted glass front"Blessed Be Thy Holy Name" and contains a chalk ware statue of Mother Mary holding the dying Jesus figure against a paper background of a church alter. Statue is about 12" tall.Painted in soft pastels and fills most of the shadow box area. The condition is very good( But fragile) for this almost century old antique.With no damage to the frame or components. This is a Victorian era shadowbox or shrine titled THE HOLY FAMILY. These were used for last rites or sick calls. It still contains the holy water bottle and crucifix and has the two candleholders still attached. It's nicely reverse painted with only a couple minor paint flakes. The crucifix has some tarnish.
