6 1/4" Wide x 3 1/4" Wide x 1 1/2" High Wonderful new reproduction scrimshaw carved bone box. As you can see this piece is tiled with ox bone on wood and decorated with a design typical of the period. Nice felt interior and bottom as you can see in the images. Scrimshaw is a craft developed by sailors on whaling ships using basic tools to etch and carve designs. The motifs are often from a sailors lives ships. Ocean scenes, beautiful women, or fantastical creatures of sailor lore. The amount of detail in scrimshaw images is common because the sailors had plenty of time to perfect their skills. Most contemporary scrimshaw uses the same techniques. But is carved in ox bone rather than whale. Cultivate your inner seafaring adventurer with this treasure box. Very nice set of Pennsylvania Painted wood and leather bellows for the fireplace hearth. About 1890 in date. Original old paint and hand painted floral design on front. Leather is super good condition. Untouched brass nipple with sweeeeet patina! Never polished! Little bit of paint loss. As expected. Works great. Nice country antique! About 19 1/2" long and 8 1/2 wide.
offered is this extremely rare version 18th century original early wrought iron hearthside hanging skewer with original hook. the only other one ive ever seen just recently sold on ebay and it reminded me that I had one in my personal collection which ive decided to offer. the only other one that seller had seen was in a museum. that pretty much sums up the rarity of this piece. its unique design allowed meat or just about anything lined up to be cooked fireside. this hanger form skewer is in excellent pristine all original condition with no damages nor repairs and has a superb true age deep early iron surface. the skewer itself measures 10'w x 5 3/4'h and the hook measures 4 1/8'h. a truly exceptional primitive piece for the collector.
This wonderful primitive was found years ago in a colonial house in Haddonfield NJ. Although the leather part is old and broken this is still a wonderful example of primitive folk art ca. 1750's- 1820's. They were hand made and have the original hand forged nails and round head fasteners holding on the leather. These are a great candidate for professional restoration or a great wall hanger as is next to your fireplace. You'd be hard pressed to find another with the fine cornucopia motif. Stenciled walls were cheaper and more sanitary than those covered with paper, but the most compelling reason for the widespread use of stenciling was that it was considered far more stylish than impersonal, mass-produced paper. Stencil artists freely borrowed wallpaper motifs and crossbred them. Successive generations of wallpaper, which became increasingly more affordable after the Industrial Revolution, covered stenciled walls, hiding them, obliterating some and preserving ... moreothers. Ann Eckert Brown’s extensive research has unearthed stencils not just in New England’s more characteristic homes, taverns, and inns, but also in the south and midwest. She divides stenciling into rural-based folk art, which uses naturalistic, and sometimes primitive motifs, and classically inspired, urban-based stencils, which feature patterns more refined in scale and earlier in execution, echoing Federal style images. Over 250 illustrations complement Brown’s text as she makes fresh stylistic connections among designs, artists, regions, and houses over two centuries, discovering and illuminating some missing links in the history of wall stenciling. Even more, she ties together the shared destinies of the families, descendants, artists, rescuers, and restorers who lived with, created, or have dedicated their lives to preserving, this beautiful art form. She also provides a glossary, a discussion of early paint materials, suggested resources for wall stenciling preservation, and a Who’s Who of American wall stenciling which includes 18th, 19th, and 20th century artists and preservationists. This pair exhibits a suface patina proving them to be of nice age. Showing both wear and use- I'm very sure both have caught a lot of fish. Notice the carved fish tails and the lead weight fitted or poured into the clothes-pin leg opening. These may be factory or hand made, I'm not certain either way- This style of bait was widely used in a variety of situations off piers and near coasts. Maybe from FL or TX? Very popular. This pair is nice as an example of the lure type or part of a collection- actually, I am offering in a later listing this week another clothespin lure. I find them both simple and interesting in that. Early Connecticut Artists& Craftsmen" By Frederic Fairchild Sherman. Privately printed for the author in 1925 in an edition limited to 325 copies. DISCUSSION: Interesting as an early compilation of decorative arts craftsmen by a noted collector/author. It seem unlikely the reader will find new information here-most of the names were culled from other early sources. The silversmith listings. For instance, are based on Curtis' book, the artists come from French. But as a compilation it retains an interest and charm, especially as you look at the categories Sherman chose- architects, silversmiths, clockmakers, cabinetmakers, potters and pewterers are all here, but so are comb makers, painters of ship pictures, silhouette cutters and ship builders. The illustrations are also charming, and include a 17th century Hartford chest, and ... morean 18th century"kissing mirror" with cut-out hearts. Sherman published many nicely-printed, extremely limited edition studies of art and artists, but he spent much more time writing about the fine arts than the decorative, and this was one of his only forays into this field. Antique Japanese Painted Terracotta Figure ~ Signed Mingei Folk Art ~ Japan Meiji Era/ 19th or Early 20th Century ~ please scroll down for more photos ~ Fine and expressive antique Japanese folk art terracotta pottery figure dating to the 19th or very early 20th century- Meiji Era. This piece is hand-sculpted and painted. Depicting a man in traditional Japanese dress. Signed by the artist with an impressed seal containing Kanji characters on the lower part of the man's robe. In the back(see photos) The mark would likely indicate the work of a Mingei studio potter during the late 19th century. The mark is clear and readable. SIZE: Height- 7.25" Width- 4.75" Depth- 4" This figure is superbly sculpted and modeled and although hollow. Is quite heavy for its size. The figure is quite animated with one foot in the air, as well ... moreas one arm held up, which was possibly holding an object at one time. There are many details, like the painted designs on his robe and the details of his costume which may be clues to his occupation or identity. The sculpting of the face is very well done and obviously the artist who made this piece was an experienced sculptor of some talent. This sculpture is in overall good condition and has developed a nice patina over the years. The only damages are small and would be easy to repair if desired. There is a toe missing on one foot and a chip to the top knot on his hair(both shown in photos) There are no other damages and this piece is a fine and sophisticated example of Japanese ceramic folk art. PLEASE NOTE: The low opening bid. With no reserve, is not meant to reflect upon the actual monetary value of the piece. My auctions are structured this way to encourage bidding and to allow the final auction price to be determined by the bidders. ~ please click on image for high definition photos ~ This item will be a museum quality addition to any collection of Japanese ceramics or Asian antiques. It will be a fine addition to any Japanese. Arts and Crafts, Hamada Era, of Buddhist S

~For Your Consideration~ A wonderful pair of Frederic Weinberg Era Mexican- Mayan Folk Art Sculptures on Wood. These unique plaques depict a male and female figure sculptured out of a turquoise and multicolor rock/pebble held together with a clear hard resin material. Each sculpture is in good vintage condition. The male figure does have a couple hairline cracks. One at the neck and one across the chest, that are only noticeable up close and do not effect it's visual appearance. Each piece is also securely fixed to it's wooden plaque. Each wooden plaque is faced with a dark wood laminate that does show slight peeling/crackling at edges. The backs have an additional three layers of laminate wood sheets which do show signs of lifting. The female plaque has a smole nail hole at the top and one corner of the three layer laminate on the ... moreback is chipped. It's also marked Hecho en Mexico. The male plaque has a small triangle bracket for hanging. Overall, these are very nice and would compliment any Mid Century Modern Decor. Measurements- Plaques- 8" x8" Figures- approx. Glass Dog Bottle. Estimated to have been made anywhere from 1800 to 1900. It is thought to have been made at the Aalborg Glasvaerk. They believe it was made as A"Whimseys" by the workmen and not necessarily made as commercial production items. Check out the pictures of the paper work that I have with the glass Dog. At some point in time somone tried to pull the cork stopper out of it. And pulled the metal cap loose from the end of the cork. But it is all there. USA SHIPPING ONLY: Please note this item ships to USA addresses only. Please have a USA Shipping address available for your purchase. DESCRIPTION: Fantastic antique Sailor's Valentine shellwork box. One of two similar boxes I am listing on eBay currently. Please please see my other listings if interested. Measures just 7.5" long and about 4.5" tall from the tabletop to the top of the shells. Comes from a local Dallas estate, guaranteed authentic and old and not any type of reproduction piece and I would date this ca. about 1875- 1910. I do think it is a pre-WWI piece. Please see my other listings for many more small luxe items of this quality. I have a No Questions Asked return policy which assures you of a hassle-free return for cash if disappointed for any reason[details below] I also welcome Reasonable Best Offers and your ... morepurchase price includes Free USA Shipping and very careful packing. CONDITION: This was made of wood. Then decorative paper over the wood and then the shells glued on top of the paper. In many places, the paper is worn through and wood underbody shows through[see pics] The hinge is an inexpensive paper hinge. It is fully intact at this point, but fragile with age and I do recommend treating the box with care in terms of opening and closing it. There was a little ribbon-hinge on the inside that that has now come detected from the top[pic#11] Mirror on the inside has no chips or cracks, but is has numerous age-spots and flecks[not really a detraction] No missing shells, but some of the shells have minor chips. Otherwise, nothing to comment on upon my honest visual examination in strong light. Overall, a considerable patina of age but no actual damage or repairs. Please take a few moments to study the numerous pics. The pics are very honest and show the condition very well and you will receive the exact box shown in the pics. EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE: I strive for excellent customer service. In almost every instance. Items ship within 48 hours of receipt of cleared payment. I of
