Vntg Antique Catholic Table Altar Shrine Cross Communion Last Rights Cabinet Box
Beautiful old table or wall altar which used to be in the old St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Covington. KY. The church opened in 1872 and was torn down in 1967, so I do not know the actual age of this item, but it has to be at least 45 years old and probably much older. This stands about 17 1/2" high and is 9 1/4" wide and overall is in pretty good condition. The front panel closes with metal hinges, which are still intact. The plastic-type material plate on the front panel door depicts an angel on each side and the 14 stations in the center. The top 2 corners of the plate have cracked apart but the tiny pieces are still attached to the panel door. The Jesus figure and larger crucifix are in good condition. The candle holders have some rust. Behind the panel door is a smaller crucifix, spoon and small plate in the satin lined ... morecompartment. The spoon and plate have some rust and corrosion, but the small cross is in very good condition. This item could use some restoration, but is still a lovely old piece as is. Antique Circa 1909 Holy Name Altar Catholic Sick Call Last Rites Box & Supplies
You're bidding on an antique Catholic relic- a Holy Name Altar& Sick Call Outfit. These were manufactured around 1909 to serve in the family home as both a shrine. And as a ready on-hand sick call and last rites kit for a visiting priest. 23" tall and 13" wide and front-to-back depth of about 3 1/2" appears to be constructed of nicely stained oak. It features a large inset shadowbox with a plaster or chalkware statue of Mary cradling the body of Jesus in the style of Michelangelo's Pieta, behind glass with reverse-painted bordering and the phrase, Blessed Be Thy Holy Name" Below that is a door with an inset print of the Last Supper, that opens up into a compartment that contains the sick call/last rites kit. This box contains a nice Holy Water bottle with ornate pewter crown-shaped capped cork stopper- bottle ... moreis 4" tall including the top and 2 1/2" wide, with a cross design on one side and script on the other reading"For Holy Water- Keep constantly filled" Box also contains a crucifix that can be affixed to the back of the door with two attached straps, the two brass candle holders that mount to brass fixtures on the sides of the cabinet, two white candles, an engraved small plate and silver-plated spoon, several white linen cloths, a small plastic vial, and a small figural religious icon of some sort. Wisconsin The label on the back of the box is dated 1890 The prayer Eva Maria book is dated 1863 The little white prayer book is dated 1935 For the age of these items I would say they are in excellent condition By what I have seen in other Religious Boxes I believe that this one is complete and has more than the standard set. There are some nicks in the top of the oak case as shown in the photos. The cover of the larger Holy water bottle is missing the finial The glass cap/ stopper of the smaller Holy water bottle has a lacy metal piece that is broken BUT the parts are all there The binding of the Prayer book needs to be glued and the IHS cloth band on the right door is worn in half. Sisters of St. Margaret's Convent 17 Louisburg Square. Boston Antique- Vintage Church Altar Bread Tin Box"Address Sister in Charge Altar Bread" written in lower left corner of label on top. Tin has lid which slides off. Tin box measures 4.5" by 2.5" by 3" with the lid on. There is no maker's mark and no date. I am not sure what the tin was used for. May be a charity box for offerings or to hold the bread. I just don't know for sure. It is certainly unusual and vintage old. Condition is as you see in the photos with this listing. Lid has an old paper label attached which has soiling marks. Rub and scuff in the paper. Box has patina surface discoloration marks, rub and scuff, age and use wear. There are no large dents in the tin metal. It was difficult to photograph the silver color of the tin without reflecting ... moreoff colors around. The tin is grey color. Please view the photos to be sure you are ok with the condition and quality before buying. I did someone online research and found the sisters moved to this Boston location in 1883 and closed the facility around 1992 when the moved. Here is history from online: The Society of Saint Margaret was founded as a nursing order in 1855 by the Reverend John Mason Neale to care for the poor and ill in the countryside in Sussex. England. They also taught and evangelized as there was opportunity. This work was so original and exciting that many were drawn to support and join the Sisterhood. As the demand for the help of the Sisters grew, daughter houses were established in Aberdeen(1864) and London(1866) In 1873, the Sisters of St. Margaret came to Boston to act as superintendents at Children’s Hospital. Not limiting themselves to the work of nursing, the Sisters established a School of Embroidery, an Altar Bread Department and a Parochial School in connection with the Church of the Advent. The oak box has reverse painted glass decorations; and is 23 inches tall. 13½ inches wide, and 5 inches deep. The sick call itself has a ceramic statue of Mary holding the crucified body of Jesus. The wooden panel at the bottom has a scene of the last supper. And opens for storage of religious items. This lot also includes a small silver tray for the Eucharist; multiple small bottles for Eucharistic wine. Box has an opening lid and compartment. That shows The Last Supper picture insert and it has a chaulkware statue of the Virgin Mary and Jesus, behind painted glass. Included in the listing. Are a 5" diameter, plated Communion dish, a glass Holy Water bottle, and a wooden bead and metal crucifix rosary. No original swivel candle holders. The oak has some surface varnish loss and staining around the lid(see pictures) Backing is brittle and has some tearing. But this remains a solid, beautiful piece. This is a wonderful and unique variety lot set! Please see the dozen photos taken because they are assisting me with description& condition of all the items. There is an antique oak dove-tailed construction box(late 1800's design) Whose lid/ top will only sit upright and straight when it is up against a wall(or chair like I used in these pictures) Stationary material or holders could be added pretty easily for convenience of using as a daily altar/display. There is expected wear to its exterior wood from age/usage such splits, dents, dings, scuffs, scratches, darkened spots(old residue from something) etc. There middle cross embellishment on the front is only partially there, but all the corners designs are still there, as well as the hardware is in working condition(hinges and from latch) The interior material is sprinkled with what ... morelooks to be some kind of rust coloring on it due to its old age from storage/storing something, along with some small areas of splits/tears in the old fabric. Included are mostly vintage era items. A nice collection to display for the holidays or even as a Baby's 1st Christmas memory box(I included colors for both sexes) Equally it makes such a divine year-round daily prayer/altar as well. The intricate carved wood cross has a nice design to it, and with only 1 little flaw one very small area and hardly noticable. All other items have some age wear to them, such as the nail on the feet of the celluloid corpus on the crucifix is loose but still remains, no bail on the golden praying hands holy medal, and the top metal piece of the Madonna holy water font is loose also. This type of Madonna holy water font has the ability to hang on the wall, although for auction purposes I propped it up on a box underneath in this display. The beads w/medal she holds is a piece that stays separate and not originally attached. The interior is not in very good shape. The lining is faded and fraying. Items inside: box of unopened Blessed Candles.
