For your consideration. This a a vintage, filigree ornate candleholder more than likely used in a Catholic church on an altar. The top of the candleholder has 9 beautiful, large jewels, open set, to allow the light from the candle to shine through the stones. The stones are blue, green, red, yellow and lavendar colored. The top of the candleholder swivels in a 360 degree circle. The bottom of the candleholder has art deco, paw-like feet and has three symbols-a cross, the sacred heart and IHS. The top has Christ figures holding a staff and"Christ Our King" inscripted underneath each figure. This measures approx. 6-1/4" high by 3-3/4" wide. The metal is goldtone and some color variations to the metal due to the age. I am guessing this to be from about the 1930's but could be earlier. The box would have been used to place on a large altar for communion. In size it is 16x10x10. The box came with two candlesticks and a chalice. The sticks are quite primitive in casting and solid copper with other metals such as bronze and pewter would have been used. They are very ornate in design and one is slightly off center. The chalice came to me with damage and hence as like so many things were purchased with being restored. I have not got around to doing this. This beautiful antique cabinet is a great example of the fine work done by Asian artisans. This cabinet dates to the late 1920's- early 1930's. It bears a tag on th eback that reads as follows: Art No XZ-19-1/ Xian Arts& Crafts/ Made In China The cabinet stands 28" high x 17" wide x 15" deep. Painted with a thick black laquer. The cabinet is still shiny. The altar style top has an etched design boasting vibrantly painted peonies with flowing vibrant blue water and trees. The side panels have a similar etched and painted floral motif. The doors have an oval concave section on each. Within this concave area. The left door has an etched and vibrantly painted stem with a bud and a butterfly above it. The right side has vibrant flower flowing from a foliated stem. The floral and butterfly motif is carried over onto the face of the drawer. The center of the drawer boasts a decorative etched medallion back with a pull style handle. The doors open to reveal a storage space with a shelf in the middle. The entire interior is painted with the same thick black lacquer. There are age and use associated dings. The altar cloth is filled with amazing embroidery crosses and flowers and accented with couched metallic gold thread. This small table cover would be great for the Easter table dressing. This small table cloth would look lovely displayed on a small table or draped over a large table as a unique table topper. Tablecloth measurements: 36” x 34” 90 cm x 85 cm) The hand done silk thread embroidery design is of 4 separate crosses in each of the corners. Above the four crosses is a flower bud leading to a large open flower with petals followed by more flower buds and leaves and stems. The colors of the silk thread embroidery are in shades of green. White purple and ... moreyellow. The silk embroidery design is further enhanced with gold metallic couched thread and a few rhinestones. The fabric of the church altar cloth is satin brocade in a pearl ivory color with a Jonquil daffodil flowers design in the brocade. The reverse side of the altar cloth is a pale yellow colour. The altar cloth is finished off with a yellow rope cord trimming with a tiny loop in each of the corners. While not perfect in condition it is worthy of being enjoyed and appreciated for its beauty as a lovely religious art piece. The altar cloth is in good antique pre-owned condition with imperfections to the embroidery. CHINESE ALTAR SHOES This auction is for an amazing and very exceptional pair of altar shoes: The night before the binding. The mother would take tiny shoes to the altar of the chosen goddess and would burn incense at the altar. An offering of fruits and special dumplings would be left for the goddess. The mother would pray that the binding would produce tiny feet for her daughter. Some of the special red bean dumplings would be fed to the daughter, as this was thought to help the foot achieve a softness and size similar to the dumplings themselves. They are made of silk and embroidered with red flowers. Very basic and very simple. There is a small black silk panel in the front. They are made exactly the same way as"larger" shoes for bound feet. But definetely not to wear. They come in a small box with a glass frame. It can simply ... morestand or can be hung. Inside the box sits a note" Kwan Yin shoes. Made and offered to the goddess of compassion by a Chinese mother on the eve of her daughter's foot binding ceremony- circa 1880" The condition is very good considering their age; but colors have faded and some of the silk at the heel is torn. I always wonderd what happened to these altar shoes after the offering. Were they just left at the altar. At the temple? Or brought back after a while to store them? fact is that not many of them remain and these are very hard to find. Length of sole 8 cm x w 2.5 cm; H 10 cm. This is an absolutely fabulous Antique Italian Fabric& Gilt-wood Religious Altar Now a Cocktail Bar IN EXCELLENT CONDITION! THIS ITEM IS SOLD AS IS AND IS NOT REFUNDABLE. This wonderful altar is a genuine antique and date to the 1800's. It is a superb example with faux marble paint decoration with gilt& silver leaf decorated fluted columns and fabric panels. Entirely hand painted. The scene on the front features 7 figures. It seems to be several archers defending a the Emperor. Scroll work around the scene. The back is a hand painted in gold color of a landscape with trees and mountains. The cover is in good condition. The altar shrine is heavily decorated and hand carved. They have been totally hand carved/made and all the original old painting has been removed by hand to have all their rich appearance back again. Up for Auction Is: The Holy Name Alter& Sick Call Outfit Antique Oak Home Last Rites Box Patented 1909 by Koenig Bros. Back in the day most people were treated for illness and died at home. Hospitals were not in widespread use and doctors and priests(Catholic and Anglican. And others) made house calls. It was fairly common for families to have such a"sick call shrine" to assist the priest in delivering the Sacrament to the sick and dying. The Holy Name Altar is one style of what is commonly called a Viaticum referring to the Bread of Life needed to make the journey to the afterlife. The Holy Name Altar was intended for ongoing devotions also and NOT just for times of illness or death The box is meant to be recessed into the wall(a wire hanger has been added to hang flat on the wall) It has a fold down altar held with a chain ... moreand features built in ornate candle stick holders on the sides. Most of these boxes are missing the candle stick holders. The upper part of the piece is a shadow box Pieta Shrine with Mary holding the sacrificed Jesus. The statue seems to be made of plaster or chalk ware and is enclosed in glass. It features reverse painting on glass with angels in the upper corners. Iconic symbols down the sides and the words"Blessed Be Thy Holy Name" at the bottom. I do not have any of the items that go in the box. 22 3/44" in height x 13" in width x 3 1/2" in depth It is in very good Antique Condition with a few minor scratches and some wear from age. 1912 Antique Altar base Catholic "The Five Mysteries" + palm prayer cards
This appears to be a base for a home a ltar. It features a green. Gold, cream and black reverse glass silk-screened window that enclose s a scroll. There a a few tiny chips a long the edges of the glass but nothing serious. The scroll rotates by using the two wooden handles to reveal a series of 18 beautifully detailed and colorful lithographs. The scroll is copyright 1912 by Koenig Bros. and is in excellent condition. With no stains or tears. The images depict the life, cruc ifixion and resurrection of Christ. They are presented in"The Five Joyful Mysteries" The Five Sorrowful Mysteries" and"The Five Glorious Mysteries" The box measures10" x 6.5" x 3" deep. Not counting the handles or the candle holders. The glass is held in a channel by 2 decorative metal corner pieces. These pieces could be removed ... moreto clean the underside of the glass, which has accumulated some dirt and haze. There are a few scratched areas on the wood which will easily touch up. On the top are two cast pot metal candle-holders and what looks like the base of a crucifix. On the back there are a few tiny nail holes. So it seems likely that a crucifix was once there but has since been removed. The back has a compartment lined with de corative chip board and a place to hold items. We purch ased this at an antique show with several woven palm prayer cards tucked in the back. So we are including them as well. I have no idea how old they are. But they make a nice compliment to the altar. This is such a unique religious collectible. Hopefully we have accurately identified i t as research turned up very little information. If you have any more information to add. Email us and we will be gla d to add it. Antique English Church Tapestry Table Cover with Fringe. Here is a gorgeous English church tapestry which would look lovely displayed as a table cover and perhaps displayed on a wall. The silver thread in the tapestry shimmers and perhaps is silk threads. The tapestry has a lovely victorian-ish design of swirls and shapes and roses. This tapestry was used for a church podium/lectern. I do not know the date of tapestry. The reverse side makes me think that it is perhaps from the 1920's. Tapestry Table Cover Measurements: 25" x 15" The tapestry table cover is in good pre-owned condition. There has been a repair patch on the reverse side of the tapestry. A few stitches to reinforce the fringe at the edges. Some old repairs to the plaster on the back multiple repaints with loss to many of them.
