CLASSIC ANCIENT VIKING BELT FITTING ARTIFACT
Archaeological evidence shows that Vikings wore elaborate gilt bronze clothing ornaments and fasteners. Evidently forsaking buttons entirely. As most such fittings were adorned with mystical symbols, the result must have been stunning. The attendant noise which the fittings made served further to draw attention to the imposing figures, much like the elaborate silver fittings and ornaments worn by cowboys. 661-667 are Viking belt fittings. The studded waist, shoulder and sword belts provided a measure of protection from cutting. Shield shaped with fine deeply modeled domed center and surrounding bead with peripheral lugs. While the scramseax is specifically identified with the Vikings. A smaller side knife was also carried and so highly regarded that they were buried with their owners. A tapered tanged blade with wood grip and leather scabbard with distinctive tapered leather side projection. In the Carl Carlsson studies of Swedish examples, the scabbard projection is sheathed in pierced brass. Similar examples from the Coppergate excavations at York were identically constructed with tooling in place of the brass sheathing. 668-672 are Viking side knives from that group.
