It's unmarked as to maker. I think it's likely circa early to mid-1900s. I believe it's in original condition. It has one interior. Multi-sectioned drawer on hinges(in need of minor repair-see below) It's constructed of walnut veneer with cedar lining, and secondary hardwood(s) The back is unfinished. Wonderful for storage and display or seating, it's both beautiful and superbly useful. CONDITION: Overall. I think it's in nice vintage condition. Solid and sturdy. Only the tiniest bit of veneer loss that I can see: a few tiny chips along the back edge. Minor nicks, imperfections normal to vintage furniture. It does have some flaws: 1) the top surface has superficial scratches and age-related splits in the veneer(but they seem shallow enough to me that I think just polyurethane(were the top refinished) and/or a walnut-tone pore filler would be enough to fill them for a flawless(or nearly so) top. 2) In the interior. Lid, left side, the wood affixing the screw supporting the pull-out shelf is stripped(please see photos; the drawer is just propped in place in the photo) so is in need of this repair. I'd probably suggest filling the oversized hole with wood scraps and glue to fill, then redrilling the hole(possibly a larger screw would work) this is left to the buyer. 3) The locks on these old chests pose a safety hazard to children(won't open from within; children can suffocate inside) and can't be sold with the lock in place. I've removed and discarded it. Leaving just the hardware(for aesthetics) so it simply opens and closes, and can be opened from inside. THANK YOU. Here is a stunning and very desirable approximately 150 year old antique Japanese small Choba tansu. Or merchant's chest, dating from the Meiji Era around the mid to late 1800's, featuring a lock bar in the center and classical safe compartment at the bottom right. It boasts a natural light colour with a rich honey patina, beautifully shaped hand forged iron hardware, wood peg construction and 8 drawers of various sizes that provide versatile storage options including a full width drawer at the top. It is in excellent overall condition for it's age. But has a little lock issue: as there is no key and the top drawer lock is in the closed position with the drawer open it will not shut all the way. The safe compartment has a tendency to swing open by itself since there is no key to lock it. The lock issue does NOT affect the lock bar which slides in and out of place properly. Please read the description and examine the photos for more details on the condition. Locksmiths and larger antique dealers will own sets of multiple keys to fit a broad range of locks so you should be able to get the drawer unlocked easily enough so it slides into place. With a little patience you could also find an antique key that fits right here on ebay(I can recommend a seller who regularly stocks this type of item) Other small issues worth noting are a small repair in the bottom corner of the smallest drawer just above the safe compartment. The larger top drawer is stiff to open and close due to age and needs a tweak, and one corner plate in the back is bent out of shape. Given it's age there is some wearing off of the blackening of a few small spots of the iron, and a couple of small nails are missing. The chest is quite substantial ... moreand sturdy; it measures 40" long x 21" deep x 22 1/2" high. It is of quality construction. And in very good to excellent condition. The chest is made of solid rosewood. And not veneer, and is finished on all 4 sides plus top; with a cedar lined inside. The style is classic with subtle Asian touches evident in the brass latch hardware. And the feet of the chest. There are no carvings. The hardware is solid brass. It has a classic look. Never goes out of style, mixes well with modern or traditional decor. Could be used at the foot of a bed, for a coffee table, a TV stand, and many other uses. Condition: a few minor nicks and scuffs. But overall very good to excellent. No water stains. There is some minor shrinkage to the floating panels(top and sides) that seems to self adjust with more humidity as the weather changes. I am not the original owner but was told the chest was purchased at Marshall Fields in the 1950s. I do not have a receipt or any written confirmation of this. The manufacture date was April 21, 1954. I received the chest in the early-to-mid 70s and had it professionally refinished with a walnut stain in 1979. Vintage Cavalier Cedar Chest - Walnut with Burled Inlay
Cavalier cedar chest. Cavalier cedar chests were built in Chattanooga. Tennessee from Tennessee red cedar by the Tennessee Furniture Company beginning in 1923. The Cavalier brand is considered the cadillac of cedar chests due to their superior craftsmanship. This is in excellent condition with no veneer loss. The wood is a walnut veneer and has a burled walnut inlay on front. There is a lock on this but I do not have a key. The cedar inside is like new and still has the cedar smell. The tray inside is in nice condition with purple felt(felt probably needs to be cleaned) This is 4' long and 19" tall. I'm not sure of the age- the company closed over 50 years ago. Since this is so large, I will only offer local pickup in Alexandria, Indiana.

Caswell Runyan was a Cedar Chest maker from Huntington. Indiana that later became Lane. This chest is from around the early 1940's. Has a rare unique feature in that the drawers swing out allowing access to the lower part. Good condition has minor cosmetic flaws to the outside of it. Also, I have no key, but all you do is twist the lock part and raise the lid. The inside is like new condition and smells strong of cedar. The original tags are still inside of it. On one tag it says that this chest contains more than the 3/4" of Red Tennessee Cedar than recommended by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. Vintage Queen Anne Style "Cavalier" Cedar Chest-Tennessee Furniture Co.
Offered is this attractive vintage Queen Anne style"Cavalier" cedar chest. Built by the Tennessee Furniture Company in Chattanooga. Tennessee. The Tennessee Furniture Company was founded in 1865 but didn't begin using the"Cavalier" trademark until 1923. I believe the company went out of business in the late 1950s-early 1960s. Making this chest at least 50 years old and possibly as much as 90 years old. The chest is 45" wide. 32" high and 19" deep. The inside dimensions of the storage area. Made from Tennessee red cedar. Are approx. 41 1/2" wide, 14 1/4" high and 16 1/2" deep. All of the front"drawers" are false. I think all of the hardware is original. The cedar interior of the piece is like new. But there are some problems with the veneered exterior: The"foot" of one ... moreof the front legs is damaged. Both ends of the fan emblem are missing. One of the very thin pieces of molding that outline the"drawers" is missing(bottom of top"drawer" The top has a good deal of scratches. Scrapes, etc. Scratch Cover has made it look better. But you might want to consider refinishing the top unless you plan to cover it with something. The front and sides are in much better shape. The original key is included. But I could not get the lock to work. Maybe you can. The lid latch works fine. However. I have this listed as"pickup only" because of what would probably be a very high shipping cost. However. Here is an early cedar chest by Lane. In good vintage condition. The mahogany finish has a deep richness to it. It does have some wear on the bracket feet. The cedar interior is excellent. 1930's vintage Caswell-Runyan cedar chest
The Caswell Runyan Company. Which began life in 1907 when it was founded by J W Caswell and Winifred Runyan, was the first of its kind to offer readymade cedar chests as a commercial product. Manufacturing took place in Huntington. Indiana, and the firm hoped to corner the cedar chest market at the point of its inception. The plant became the second largest wood-working plant in Indiana at its primacy. Caswell cedar chests were a patented product. They reflected the fact that people were moving away from creating their own furniture in favour of buying ready made goods. At first. The company employed approximately two dozen people– a figure which had increased to 600 by 1924, by which time Caswell Runyan cedar chests were being sold across the United States. This rate of growth is quite remarkable, bearing in mind the company forewent a national ... moreadvertising campaign. In 1929 Caswell Runyan merged with Utah Radio Products Co. a loud speaker manufacturer) of Chicago. Bringing together speakers and cabinets to complete a radio reception combination. Catalogue numbers. Patent numbers and lot numbers were printed on Caswell Runyan cedar chests. These can tell collectors a great deal about age and value. One or all of these details can be found stamped lightly onto the top edge of one of the trays. Aged chests can be professionally restored– a process that will restore some or all of their value. This is an original antique in which its outside surface needs some veneer restoration as shown in the pictures. Dimensions are 45.5L x 19W x 21H. And the depth inside the chest is 11in.
