It came right out of a home here in New England, and is a great piece in solid black walnut. It even has the keyhole covers on the hand cut dove tail drawer and retains the original hand carved pulls. The tombstone doors open on the two-section base. The backsplash is 12 inches tall, and the white and gray grain marble top has an ogee bevel edge and round corners. We love the candle shelves where an oil lamp used to sit. A commode is a piece of furniture where a bowl and pitcher would sit, and there would be a slop jar underneath behind the door compartment. This commode is in nice shape.

A couple of coats of lacquer could be added to give it a more vibrant look if desired, but I personally like the mellow finish. The dresser has white and gray grained round corner marble top with the insert in the center, raised burl panels on the drawers, big circular buttons on the middle of the large drawers, Victorian tear drop pulls, candle shelves on the mirror, applied carvings, burl panels and a beautifully carved fancy crest. The carved details on this piece are absolutely beautiful! This lovely dresser measures a total height to the top of the pediment on the mirror of 83(6ft 11 in) inches. The dresser width measures 42 1/2 inches, dresser depth measures 18 inches, and the height from the floor to the top of the marble on the base measures 31 inches, and this piece weighs approximately 145 lbs. This beautiful 19th century dresser has a spectacular ornate carved crest at the top with raised shaped panels of burl walnut below. Carvings on the shoulders,rosettes and round candle shelves flank the mirror with lift ... moretop handkerchief/glove boxes at the base. The mirror portion and the marble does lift off to allow easier transport during shipping and moving. We believe mirror to be a vintage replacement and is encased in a rich walnut frame, and it does pivot back and forth allowing you to adjust its position, and the actual mirror portion measures 27 inches high by 15 inches wide and the mirror is in excellent condition. The white and grey veined beveled edge marble on the base is original and is in wonderful antique condition with no issues we can find. This is a beautiful American victorian 6 drawer marble top chest with the original finish and fine detailed wooden drawer pulls. The chest is circa 1880. The chest is a good size that measures 47" wide. 21 1/4" deep, and 31 1/2" tall. The chest has the original white veined marble and original brass roller. The marble has a small 6" surface run that does not go through to the back. There are two upper drawers that are 20" wide and 6" deep. The two lower drawers are 41" wide and 8" deep. This lovely chest measures a total height of 34 3/4 inches. Total width of 38 1/4 inches and total depth of 18 3/4 inches and weighs approximately 95 lbs. We believe the white and grey veined marble top to be original and is in fine antique condition but does show some slight usage and character marks and a bottom rim chip that is common for marble of this age. The three large storage drawers each offer raised oval decorative molding and carved pulls with period dove-tailed ends. And all the locks are intact but we do not have the key, and this chest has its casters intact on all four feet to allow for easier moving within your home. Will ship if you make arrangements. This dresser was handmade in the Midwest during the Civil War period. Likely before 1860. The back of the dresser shows it belonged to Henry Wims(Williams) An ex-slave according to the News-Palladium from Benton Harbor Michigan(Saturday, April 1, 1950(pg.9) Henry came up to Benton Harbor from Kentucky through Indiana in 1882. When he was a young man, about 20 years of age. He had been to Louisville where the cars stopped and where there was a great concentration of Union soldiers during the Civil war and decided to follow the railroad north and see where the tracks joined the"Underground railway" that he had heard so much about. Also, his wife's father lived at St. Joseph, where there were many ex-slaves and their descendants. His travels brought him to Benton Harbor. The solid walnut dresser ... morehas hand-carved walnut and leaf pulls. Hand-dovetailed drawers and square nails show expert craftsmanship. Finish is excellent with warm antique patina.
