The top lid folds down to reveal a writing surface, still has the old velvet, the ribbon is a recent replacement of course. Under this is a storage area for papers or documents. I am not sure if this is Black Forest but it does have very nice hand carved designs- the top panel has leaves.Vines,and either berries or grapes. The back portion is hinged and lifts up to reveal an area for pens and possibly for inkwells or whatever. This listing offers the child's roll top desk. Since I'm uncertain of the age. I won't mislead anyone. I was told it was late 19th century, but again, please judge from the pictures. This is a beautiful vintage/ antique wooden student desk. I bought this years ago at an antique shop. My children loved to take turns sitting at this desk doing their homework or playing school. This is a very heavy wood desk. There are no stickers or tags on the desk showing the make or age of the desk. There is a drawer under the seat. In the drawer is a lip for pencils to sit in. It is a nice deep drawer and slides in and out very nicely. The surface of the desk actually raises to become a drawing type board desk. There is a very heavy duty metal mechanical unit that supports this movement. I think a piece may be missing that holds the desk surface upright. But this has never prevented my children from using the desk this way. The surface of the desk top has black circles on it. I bought the desk this way. Cleaning out items that I just don't use. I have had this secretary I purchased from an estate auction several years ago. We just don't use it. It sits in a corner. Nobody sees. Set of 2 antique wrought iron and wood children's school desks. These desk's are not hooked together. But they are identical to each other. The first photo shows the desk on the left has a seat that is a wobbly and out of line with the backing of the seat. see photo) The desk tops do not open up. There are some marks, scratches and wear and tear on both of the desk's. These were purchased at an estate sale and are sold as is. Each desk measures about 30 inches tall, about 30 inches from open front seat to the back of the desk, and about 23 inches from left to right seat. These are very heavy and they would have to be local pickup only. Very cute for displaying dolls, stuffed animals, or just to display alone.
