An ancient Celtic Iron Age'Horned Man' face mount. Dating to between 50 BC– 100 AD. The pleasing swirls that compose the face recall classic Celtic vegetal decorative styles. The deep saucer-like eyes draw the viewer in. Whilst the subtly curving horns add a further sense of otherworldliness to the already abstract features. Incisions in the centre of the forehead and beneath the eyes would likely have originally contained inlays. The horned man is often associated with the god Cernunnos(the horned one) A deity common across Celtic western Europe but particularly affiliated with the British Brigantes tribe. The Brigantes, whose name roughly translates as the homage takers, were a federation of smaller clans ruled over by a single royal house. The Roman historian Tacitus believed the Brigantes territory to be the largest British kingdom ... morein both size and population. Here we have and ancient Celtic ring around IV century B.C it shows two opposing snakes which is a motive well used in mythology as a simile of the beginning and the end a representation commonly used in antiquity that can be found in other cultures as Vikings or Greeks. A beautiful and rare ancient European bronze flat axe of early form. Dating to around 2300- 2000 BC. This Bronze Age axe is of striking form. With subtly curved blade edges tapering into a long neck. Its style suggests it dates to the Mount Pleasant phase of the early Bronze Age. It was during this period that metalworking grew from its early stages into a widespread industry, initially using copper and gold but with bronze working appearing at the end. The distinctive form is complemented by an attractive deep green patina. This axe would have been forged by an itinerant craftsman. Who would have travelled long distances across the forests and farmland of ancient Europe to sell these most treasured of items. Cast from a simple two pieced stone mold, the axe would have then been hammered into shape. Flat stone anvils and hammers are known ... morefrom the graves of craftsmen dating from this period. Much early metalwork, like flintwork, required other materials to make the complete item. If you look on-line you will see that almost all the ancient Roman and Celtic gold and silver jewelry has been cleaned. It has been cleaned to show its true beauty. Most sellers do not want to do this with the bronze( jewelry or coins) because it is time consuming and hard work with little monetary return for the extra effort. In my opinion it is not patina but dirt. Patina is found on bronze statues and forms because of their exposure to the air. Almost all of the items I sell and the items like mine on-line, have come out of the ground. They are found either in flint lined safety boxes put into the ground by the original owners or in clumps of dirt if the boxes have broken open, which is the case ... moremost of the time. The dirt has to be broken away to even see the items and that is not a patina, but dirt. If you look on-line you will see that almost all the ancient Roman and Celtic gold and silver jewelry has been cleaned. It has been cleaned to show its true beauty. Most sellers do not want to do this with the bronze( jewelry or coins) because it is time consuming and hard work with little monetary return for the extra effort. I clean them and I put in the hours to do it( one ring can take as many as 5 hours to clean properly. because I feel that they should be seen as their last owners saw them bright and shiny( I leave the inner part of the ring as-is so the new owner can be the first person in the age of the ring to touch it once the"PATINA" wears-off. As far as lessening the value, most of these items are less than $100 and in the 11 years I have been selling these items on Eba there has been little change in the price.
