An extremely rare and unusual Thracian bronze figure of the god Sabazios. Dating to the 2nd- 3rd century A.D. Modelled in provincial style. The depiction is one of a Thracian horseman, his long hair swept away from the face, wearing a short tunic and with his right arm held out in front to balance himself and left hand raised. The figure depicted is Sabazios, the nomadic horseman and sky father god of the Thracians. A truly ancient deity. Sabazios may even be alluded to in Homer's Iliad. Though the Thracian horseman was a common motif in the ancient world, he is ordinarily depicted with a spear in preparation to strike down his foes. Yet in this rare and unusual depiction, Sabazios is shown with his hand raised in the gesture typical of bronze hands associated with his later Roman cult, established around the 2nd century. Spreading from ... morePhrygia or Thrace. The wider worship of Sabazius probably came to the Empire with the gladiators and auxiliary troops recruited into the Legions. The Romans associated him with Dionysus, the god of wine, and his later popularity as a deity carried small bronze figures such as this to the widest reaches of the Empire. Whilst Thracian horsemen are relatively common. This piece shows an abstract form that is highly unusual, furthermore it is extremely rare to be able to attribute a figure to a particular deity in this manner. A Rare And Early Ancient British Bronze Age Flat Axe - 2300 BC
A beautiful and rare ancient British bronze flat axe of early form. Dating to around 2300- 2000 B.C. This Bronze Age axe is of striking form. With subtly curved blade edges tapering into a long neck. Its style suggests it dates to the Mount Pleasant phase of the early Bronze Age. It was during this period that metalworking grew from its early stages into a widespread industry, initially using copper and gold but with bronze working appearing at the end. Interestingly, this bronze piece displays the form of older British axes cast in pure copper, and may therefore be a particularly early example of ancient alloying techniques. The distinctive form is complemented by an attractive deep green patina. This axe would have been forged by an itinerant craftsman. Who would have travelled long distances across the forests and farmland of ancient Britain ... moreto sell these most treasured of items. Cast from a simple one pieced open stone mold, the axe would have then been hammered into shape. Flat stone anvils and hammers are known from the graves of craftsmen dating from this period. Much early metalwork, like flintwork, required other materials to make the complete item. Bone and wooden handles for daggers and axes, and leather sheathes for edged tools would have been common, although largely now lost to us. Given its relatively small size. This axe is likely to have been used as a hand held tool, though it may have ultimately ended up being used in a religious context, as a dedication. Indeed these artefacts were often deposited in rivers, springs and bogs, likely because of connections with a watery underworld. Who exactly the gods of British people were at this time is not known, but attention has been drawn to a series of carved wooden figures from wetland contexts across Britain that may be representations of divine beings. This lot of lead spindle whorls was purchased from a collector in England who told me they were dug up in Yorkshire. Specifically. I've done nothing to clean them, so what you see is what you get. A spindle whorl(according to Wikipedia) is"a disc or spherical object fitted onto the spindle to increase and maintain the speed of the spin. For ages the whorls have been made of many different materials: amber. Antler, bone, coral, glass, metal(iron, lead, lead alloy) and wood(oak) Some types of local materials have been also used, such as chalk, limestone, mudstone, sandstone, slate, and soapstone. A fascinating. Well provenanced and rare ancient European Bronze Age reworked dagger, dating to approximately 800 BC. Of rare and unusual form. With a long ridged handle, slender blade and prominent central rib. Unusually, this piece appears to have originally been made as a spear head, subsequently broken(possibly in battle) and reworked into a dagger. Beating marks from this process of reworking are still clearly visible. Such weapons would have been used in battle by the early Celtic peoples and their predecessors. Indeed the period to which this artefact dates was characterized by migrations and invasions of warrior led groups across Europe. A striking European Bronze Age spearhead. Dating to approximately 800 BC. With a beautiful patina, this piece is a stunningly well preserved example of its type. A very fine example. With well-formed and preserved features, symmetrical and robust mid-rib and cylindrical. Socketed with two attachment holes on either side, the spear would have been inserted into a long wooden shaft, now long perished. Such spears would have been used in battle by the early Celtic peoples and their predecessors.
