A quite abstract and pleasing composition, the facial features simple but powerfully executed, the thick hair swept back and the spinal groove clearly defined at the back. The attitude of this figure strongly hints that he was a warrior- his right hand likely held a spear or other weapon whilst his left may have held a shield. The Iberians were a proto-Celtic people from what is now mostly Spain and Portugal. In ancient times these peoples were regarded as fierce warriors. Often being recruited as mercenaries by the powerful civilizations to the south and east. The present figure was likely dedicated in a shrine or temple, by a donor who wished to be granted a favour by the presiding God. Height(excluding mount) 2 1/8 inches. Condition: Unrestored. A rare ancient Celtic bronze attachment depicting a bull's head. Dating to approximately 50 B.C. 50 A.D. The creature shown in typical Celtic. Abstract form, with thin snout, almond shaped eyes and wide horns. The loop at the top and the two bronze rivets suggest that the piece was originally attached to a casket or other large vessel. So-called Celtic art reflects the indigenous tastes of those peoples who inhabited the lands conquered by the Romans around Western and Northern Europe.
