Antique Victorian Wood SlopedTraveling Writing Lap Desk with Mother-of-Pearl Inlay As Is Shown. 4 1/2" height 13 7/8" length 9" width. Opened 18 1/4" Presented is a wonderful antique wooden lap writing desk. With Damage. It was crafted in America. Circa Mid 1800s. This special lap desk was made of a wood with veneer over and a mother of pearl inlay. The interior writing surfice has a blue velvet fabric glued on and a black velvet ribbon acrossed the top where the hings are. There are six compartments on the inside for paper. Writing tools, and whatnots. The top lid has some cracking and veneer is missing on the side and it has damage where the hinges go(on top and bottom) See photos. The lock is present and there is no key. Locking top plate needs to be reattached. Its hinges need to be reworked. The hinges are included. But the location on the box needs to be repaired. This listing offers the child's roll top desk. Since I'm uncertain of the age. I won't mislead anyone. I was told it was late 19th century, but again, please judge from the pictures. This is one really cool piece of history! There are ink wells and pencil cutouts for seven people/employees. It is straight on one side and curved on the other side. See the pics as to how I squared it up on a trailer to best show the curvature. It is 138" long by 88" on the curved side. I am not certain if this was used as a school desk. This Attractive writing desk is made out of solid wood, and it has a Victorian style medium/dark red/brown stain finish color that makes it look like Mahogany but it is definitely a hard wood that looks more like OAK to me. There is a slight curve to the front to the drawer sides which adds a very nice flair. The top is solid wood, not veneer. It is in it’s original condition so there are scratches on the desktop due to normal everyday wear. There is a Decorative edge that has been added to the edge of the top that may not have been original. A wonderful antique post-office desk that has been in my family for 20 years(originally purchased in Texas) We're finally selling it to prepare for a move to the East Coast. The desk is 54" long by 35" wide by 71" tall. It's solid and very sturdy. The cubbies are detachable from the main desk(so not too bad to move) There is wear consistent with its original use and age. The stain has worn down in some places and there's one small chip on a drawer. It's a great piece of American history- and remains both stylish and utilitarian!
