I purchased ... moreit at an old suburban farm yard sale many years back. The steel cross arrow and James logo are flanked buy a full bodied zinc cow at the other end. The is 32-1/4 inches. It has a 5-1/2 inch, zinc, cone base-cover and a hollow zinc finial. The dark amber glass ball is 4-1/2 inches in diameter. It stands 33-1/2 inches tall. The black and gold painted surface must be at least 50-60 plus years old. The condition is very good. There is only see a slight dent in one side of the cow. The glass ball is in great shape as are the cone and finial. It doesn't appear to have any old repairs. It's held together with cotter pins to keep it lined-up. Please look at all the pictures and if you have any questions please ask. All my items are guaranteed to be as described and pictured. If your ever unsatisfied returns are not a problem. This is a very charming Weather Vane which I purchased years ago in New Hampshire near Concord. It features a Butterfly seen n profile with his wings up. The Butterfly. The directionals and ball are all made out of cast iron and gilded over what looks to me like a grey green primer coat. Some of the gilding has worn away, but no rust has appeared on the iron elements. When I mounted this Butterfly I used a new steel rod and a collar to hold the ball in place. These I painted black. As he is now on his wooden stand. This Butterfly is 21 1/4 inches tall and 18 1/5 inches wide. The Butterfly himself is 12 1/2 inches long and 8 1/4 inches tall. Vintage Copper Lightning Rod Weather Vane with Glass Ball & Directional Arrow
For auction is a complete vintage copper lightning rod/weather vane similar to the one seen on a recent version of American Pickers. This one was one of two that graced an old barn in eastern Pennsylvania. It would make a great architectural display piece for your home. Right now. It is mounted on a board for display purposes but it will not be shipped with the board. You can supply your own and save shipping costs. The three legs and framework for the rod are iron and are rusted from years of being exposed to the elements. Just the rod is copper. The three legs were meant to be spread out and attached to the peak of the roof. The bottom of the rod has a copper loop through which ran copped cable to make any lightening strike go to ground. The glass ball was intended to explode if hit by lightening to indicate a strike. The pictures are representative ... moreof its brown light coffee color. There are no cracks in the glass but there are flakes on the upper and lower edges of the circular hole as can be seen in the 6th and 7th pictures. It appears that the more serious flakes resulted from the ball turning on the directional arrow. I suppuse there is some type of washer or gasket to prevent this type of damage. The arrow is 20 3/4" long. It is made from cas aluminum or white metal as it is not very heavy. The rod stands 65 3/4" tall and the entire peice shows good green copper patina.The ball will be shipped separate from the rod and arrow to prevent damage.

I really did find this in a barn at an estate sale. It appears to be in good original condition. I don't see any breaks or repairs in the ball. There is one small piece missing on the tail of the weather vane. I really didn't notice it until I took pics so it's not all that noticeable. It has copper. Steel, aluminum and milk glass in it. I'm pretty certain the tip is copper like most of them was. I will have to fold the legs in to ship it. They are simple to fold back out to wherever you want them to be. Antique copper lightning rod with green glass weather vane and rare amethyst glass 8-sided prism-ball with a bubbled band. Ball reads: Diddie Blitzen Rods. Some surface rust from the elements but in very good condition despite its age. Weather vane looks to be cast iron with green glass in the tail. The rod itself and pointed tip are copper. This was the only one to survive the years.there were two others and neither had glass ball intact.

These were part of a weather vane I purchased in the town of Bird-In-Hand. Lancaster County Pennsylvania in the 1980's. I have no way of knowing their age. The N/S measures 22" in length. E/W measure 17 3/4" The ball measures app 4 1/2" high and wide.
