Antique Black and Gold Toleware Spice Box and 6 Tins w/ Brass Handle NEAT!
You are viewing an antique Toleware Spice Box tin with 6 canisters. It is from the early to mid 19th century. It measures approximately 9.5 inches long. 6.25 inches deep, and 3.25 inches tall. The canisters measure approximately 3 inches tall each. The outside of the tin has gold colored design done over a black finish, while the inside is copper in color. The hasp and hinges all work properly. The canisters had the name of the spice stenciled on the tops of them. The Nutmeg is still visible as well as most of the Mace. The remainder of the spices were Ginger, Cloves, Allspice, and Cinnamon. The rings for two of the lids are missing(as pictured) and there is some paint loss. Overall this great piece is in very good condition for its age and will make a fantastic addition to your collection. Small Primitive Vintage Hand Painted Toleware Tin Box Hinged Lid Spice Box or? I had the wonderful opportunity to meet and shop with another ebayer seller from out of town recently- a real catfish moment. Because we’ve talked for years, but never met! No surprises, just all fun and did we shop until we dropped! I have lots of very cool items for you that I will be listing all week. Enjoy! This old box is somewhat of a mystery to me. It's made from a metal that a magnet stick to- and it's light and definitely has the feel and weigh of tin. But if you look closely at the inside, it has a patination that looks very much like the pattern on galvanized steel(but this doesn't have the weight of steel) Look at my inside photos and see what you think- it's a first for me. The other thing that would support whether it's galvanized ... moreis that, although the metal shows darkness form age, it does not have rust- there's rust colored spots, but I do think that is from the paint. Whatever it's made of, it's held up very very well.this one is a charmer. Measuring 3" square and 2 1/2" tall, it is the size of the spice boxes that I have seen, but there's no name etc. on it. It weighs a smidge under 1/4 lb. It has a lovely hand painted finish- the background of the body is gold, and the top and bottom are black, and they are accented with flowers on all 4 sides in shades of rust, green, burgundy and grey. The top of the lid, and the sides of the lid have thin line hand painted borders too. The hinged lid works perfectly, and the lid fits well, and stays securely in place. It really is in excellent solid and sturdy condition overall- I can't find a ding. There is wear to the finish all over in small scratches and scrapes- it's easier to see at the solid black on top. There's also some palpable small white spots on all 4 sides- see photo 4 for a good example- those aren't paint chips, those are something on TOP of the paint- it feels like paper to me- as if this was wrapped i

Neat, rare grocery display tin spice box, hand painted toleware, mustard(please see attached pictures) Item is 8&3/8" tall, 6&1/8" wide, is entirely hand painted on the front(the mustard decoration on the lid maybe a decal, however) and this looks to be a least a hundred to a hundred and fifty years old or older. Antique 19th C Fries Tin Grain Painted Toleware Primitive Spice Box Kitchenware
Up for auction is an antique Fries& Co tin toleware spice box recently found at auction in the Lancaster County. PA area. It is found in good used condition, but is missing one of the interior individual spice boxes, as seen best in photo#2. The exterior is grain painted in a yellow and yellow color, but quite dirty. This entire piece could benefit from a good cleaning. There are several scratches on this box, with losses to the paint on all sides. The bottom of the tin is unpainted. It has a hasp on the side. In the day, spices were valuable and locked when not being used. The top of the box has a swing handle so it can be easily carried where needed. The overall case measures approximately 9 5/8" x 6 5/8" x 3 3/8" in size. Each individual spice box measures approximately 3" x 3" x 2 1/4" without the acorn ... morefinial. 1940-50 Toleware Spice Box w6 Fitted Boxes Hand Paint Sign Lucille Brown Perfect
This is a marvelous older rectangular handled spice box with 6 square fitted boxes nested inside. These types of spice boxes were very popular in the first quarter of the 1900's. The piece is expertly hand painted and signed by Lucille Brown who was very well known for her tole painting expertise. During the 1940's and 50's the artist would seek out antique items and restore them in her own uniquely beautiful style of toleware painting. Refer the the Wilmington Sunday Star printed in 1953) With this in mind. We don't know for certain how old the box was before she restored it. She was located in the state of Delaware, and was renouned in the tri state area of Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. This toleware tin box has been in a private collection for decades. It was sold to me as a hatbox or bonnet box but I don't think so. I've never seen a hatbox that had a lockable closure. Usually something of high value such as sugar or spices would be kept in something that could be locked. This piece is made of heavy thick tin with original paint decoration of gold. Mustard and red. The closure and hinge are brass and turn easily. A small lock(not included) would've been placed through the hole. Condition is great with minor OLD rust on the bottom and dents here and there on the top edges. My best guess of age is 1840-60. A premier piece for your collection!
