Circa 1900. This is fantastic example of antique Majolica tile work. The tile set can be framed or used in your kitchen. Bath or home decor! It is rare to find single tiles of this type and quality and a matched pair is an exceptional find! Each tile depicts a"cameo" of a cherub with an ornate scrolled design in press molded high relief. The cherubs have wonderful detailed faces& hair. The tiles have a marvelous translucent tobacco brown glaze. The tiles are marked on the back"SHERWINS. PAT. LOCKBACK, ENGLAND. Sherwin and Cotton was established in 1877 in Hanley. Stafforshire, England and was a prolific manufacturer of all forms of tiles for walls and floors. They were makers of some of the earliest of George Cartlidge's photographic tiles and also had a range of Niello tiles which were transfer printed and coloured using translucent glazes. Another speciality was barbotine tiles, tiles made using raised painted slip decoration. The company folded in 1911. The tiles are saquare in shape and each measure approx. 6" by 6" by 3/8" These items are estate pieces and in excellent condition for their age. The tiles are original. There are no cracks or repairs. We have not polished/cleaned the pieces, we will leave this up to the new owner. We would remind bidders that these pieces are antique and pre-owned with wear consistent with their age, use and the manufacturing process, such as minor crazing and two chips on the edge of one of the tiles. We are really nitpicking. Overall the tiles are fantastic as you can see in the photos, we are just simply trying to be as specific as possible for our customers.
