It is truly a nice period untouched table. It has a ribbon mahogany top, round corner drop leaves, heavy bold column four legged base, solid cast brass Duncan Phyfe claw foot and built in castors. I normally don’t buy period furniture like this, but I was very impressed by how untouched this piece was. The overall size is 40.5 inches long, 24 inches wide when the leaves are closed, 15 inches wide on each leaf, 52 inches long when the leaves are flipped up. The finish is very nice for being 180 years old. It does show normal nicks, dings and scratches, but I believe it would rub out nicely to make a good presentation.

English Edwardian Mahogany Drop Leaf Writing Table Antique Architect Desk
Edwardian Mahogany Writing Table with Drop Leaves England. First half of the 20th Century, Brass Mounted with lifting Architect-style writing surface Item# 120012QIP07B This is a beautiful antique writing table. Probably crafted in England of the Edwardian influence, though later than the period. The solid boards of mahogany have brilliant grains, the mid-most center of the table lifting to create an angled writing surface. The interior has an interesting mechanism design, using a button on the back of the table to depress a little wooden catch, allowing the table top to lift and remain propped until the button is depressed again. At the back, a small compartment can be opened when the top is in lifted position, revealing several compartments and an old glass inkwell. On either side, the mahogany leaves lift on brass hinges, lifted on mahogany ... morewings that swing outward. The front of the table has a little hand dovetailed drawer with original round ring hardware. The table rests over tapered legs terminating in spade feet of the Hepplewhite influence. This is a precious little decorative piece, bringing great visual interest to any study or office setting, also being an excellent side table in a formal sitting area as it is quite unique and versatile. In overall outstanding condition with only the most minor of blemishes, sturdy and strong for regular functional use, this is a great find for any interior decorator or anyone looking to improve the variety of a room in their home. Measurements: 40 5/8" wide when opened. 26 1/2" wide when closed. 22 1/2" deep x 29" high Condition Report: Visually Outstanding Condition Minor scratches. Dings and abrasions as associated with any functional antique. Interior seems to have some possible adjustments. Probably crafted after the Period, but during the first half of the 20th Century. You can raise one or both leaves at a time. Tables like this were used to make daily dough on busy kitchens. But today it can serve the purpose of a kitchen table in a small cottage or even a dining table if you have no dining room– when leaves are open you can serve up to 8-10 people and when leaves ... moreare down it takes up minimal floor space. This table was carefully restored, when we did our best trying to preserve it’s original patina and time marks on the top are clearly seen. Because it is solid wood it was much easier to remove them and make this table like new. But we are museum quality restorers, not refinishers. Table is jointed with wooden pegs; uneven. Hand cut dovetails on the drawer and the way how it was constructed, along with early, rusted through nails makes us believe that it is a very old item, dating back to early 19th- late 18th century, but due to the provincial nature of this piece of furniture it just cannot be identified for sure and an exact date of its creation is unknown. It is a quality made item, well build and precisely fit, only three solid pieces of lumber were able to make it 42“ wide, which means that it’s wood came from about 300 years old tree; you will not able to find lumber this wide in stores anymore– all old trees are under protection of the French government now, hence they were almost all gone in 18-19 centuries, when France was producing only solid wood furniture. American Chippendale Walnut Drop Leaf Dining Table. Pennsylvania or Delaware c. 1760-80 Probably Delaware River Valley. Originally One of a Pair Straight Marlborough Legs Item# 130002IWT18 The drop leaf dining table was a very prominent form in homes of the higher classes during the Chippendale and Federal periods. A working solution to the problem of balancing space with flexibility in a home that entertained company regularly. It allowed for tables to be posed as pier or serving tables against the wall, making the room large and inviting during a social engagement, these being brought out as needed to recreate a dining room. This table was almost certainly part of a pair originally. Two sets of bracket holes on one leaf evidence of clasps that would have attached to the leaves of the other table to create a solid surface. A pair of tables ... morevery similar in form, though crafted with solid board leaves, was offered at Christies in 2003( Lot 322. Sale 1189, sold as a pair for $13,145) Intact pairs of this form are rather uncommon as these were regularly broken up as they were passed down in families. The top is crafted of five boards butt-jointed with tongue-in-groove joinery assisting in all but one leaf. This probably a later solution to the uneven shrinking of the boards, secured from the underside with butterfly dovetails. The leaves hang over ruled joints, lifting on two swinging gate legs, the frame and knuckle crafted of solid oak double pinned to the square Marlborough leg. The oak rails are affixed with scattered rosehead nails to the poplar frame rails coupled with one original hand filed screw set in wells into the top on both sides, these boards joined to the mahogany front and back rails with exposed dovetails behind the gate legs. Three dovetailed walnut braces join the frame to the top, these absent several screws, the top likewise secured with three hand filed screws set evenly in wells through the mahogany front and back rails. The stand is solid mahogany and features dove-tailed drawers with rounded drawer faces and wooden knobs. This is not a reproduction piece as is evidenced by the alligatoring of the 19th century varnish. The stand shows no signs of having been repaired and no cracks or splits in the wood. THE FOUR PAW FOOTED LEGS ON CASTERS, AND THE TURNED PEDESTAL, ARE HEAVILY CARVED WITH ACANTHUS LEAVES. THE SKIRT OF THE TABLE HAS FOUR BLOCK CORNERS, EACH WITH A SINGLE FLAME BIRCH VENEER PANEL, THE CORNERS DECORATED WITH TURNED MAHOGANY DROP FINIALS. THE DROP LEAVES HAVE ROUNDED, INDENTED, CORNERS. THE TOP TABLE BOARD, AND THE LEAF TOP BOARDS, ARE A THICK FLAME MAHOGANY VENEER OVER MAHOGANY BOARDS. ONE END OF THE MAHOGANY SKIRT HAS A FAUX DRAWER FRONT WITH THE ORIGINAL CUT GLASS KNOB.
