An 1827-pattern Royal Navy officer's sword. The precise age of the sword is not known. It was last sold in 1989 by an antiques shop in the English town of Dartmouth. The location of Britannia Royal Naval College, where the British Royal Navy trains midshipmen to become commissioned officers. Purchased in 2002 from Butterfield's Auctions in CA. I have the ori ginal paperwork from purchase. They describe items as: 19th Century. Comprisi ng two(the red and gold painted piece was purchased later) Utsubo(enclosed quivers. One of brown lacquered woven bamboo, the other black lacquered wrapped bamboo fiber" Black quiver is just under 39" long, others are about 42" arrows are 37.5" The arrows are wonderful examples and have what I call target heads. Over all I would rate as excellent-very good condition and make nice display pieces and has been in my collection for over 10 years. Quivers have some wear and lose to lacquer. The Bamboo shaft has been slightly sanded and re-lacquered(Japanese Cashew Lacquer) The Arrow has been re-fletched with wild Turkey Feathers(As the originals were) And strength wraps/windings at the knoch and fletching are new Japanese Silk Cord. At the arrow head is wrapped in tamahagane steel wire for strength(Old original wire rusted almost away) the complete arrow is fully restored as used by the Samurai in early Japan. Japanese sword wakizashi, tanto, dagger in mountings, gold habaki, mon
This is a Japanese sword wakizashi in mountings. The blade is unsigned. Shinogi-zukuri with o-kissaki(long point) shape. Muromachi period ca.1550 era made blade. The blade is in old polish, shows tiny staines on surface but no rust and in good condition. The temper line is wavy notare with nie(chrystal) active temper throughout the blade. Has deep and long turn back temper at the point. The forging grain is itame-hada, no forging flaws at all. The scabbard is urushi lacquered scabbard. Shows minor lacquer loss but no dent, no crack and in good condition. The handle is tight fit with gold family mon overlay shakudo fuchi/ kashira and tsuka-ito wrapping is no cut. No loose and menuki is matched gold overlay pine tree motif in good condition. The habaki also pine tree motif gold foiled habaki which is very heavy. There also exists a tanto with a 1369 date on it, roughly establishing his work period. The Kongobyoe school passed down from smiths Takanawa. Morikuni, Moritaka, and then to the various other smiths of the school, including Reisen Sadamori. The school’s style exhibits both Yamashiro and Yamato influences and consequently their work can be described as majiwarimono, or"off the path" The masame in the ha of Kongobyoe works lends to their general classification of Yamato-den style. Yoshisuke’s name seems to have been carried on by several generations of smiths of the Shimada school, and work of these later smiths has been attributed dating from the mid-Muromachi period. Although the Shimada school was not one of the Gokaden, they maintained a close relationship with the Sue-Soshu school, and some of their swords show pronounced Soshu influence. The Shimada school seems to have also had technical exchanges with the Shitahara and Sengo schools, and with the smiths of Mino province. The Myo-O are particularly venerated by the Shingon sect of Japanese esoteric Buddhism. They are a group of wrathful deities known in English as the Mantra Kings. The Wisdom Kings or the Knowledge Kings. Fudo Myo-O is the best known of these deities. He is the patron of the martial arts, of healing, and of business. The sword is not signed but the tang is black rust which may be over 500 years old or more. The blade measures 19 1/4 inches long and with the handle and the scabbard its 28 1/4 inches long. The blade has a great temper line and its easy to see. I think this sword had paperwork at one time but it was lost during the estate sales. Relisted with corrected description. I'm selling this Samurai sword for my friend of 20 years. Here is the description provided: My great-uncle. Jack Goodall, was in the Marines for 29 years. He saw significant front line action during the Korean conflict. During his stationing in Korea and China, he befriended a General in the Chinese Army, who gave him this sword. About a year ago, I took this sword to a local sword expert, by the name of Frank Aon. He inspected and photographed it and sent his notations to the Honami School, in Japan. His contact person at the Honami School responded with: This sword is from the Kamakura Dynasty(early 1300's) and was a"Tachi" It was made, in design, along the themes taught by the Bizen school of sword-making. During the 1600's, the blade was shortened to its current length, and thus ... morebecame a"Katana" At some point, the sword was blessed by a Buddhist Monk, in that there exists a Buddhist character on one side of the blade, near the handle. I have done my best to photograph this symbol.and, by the way, this symbol DOES NOT reveal the actual swordmaker) The temper line is missing in a few places from previous polishing. This sword is in need of a formal polishing. I left the rubber ring about two years besides this tsuka and the rubber ring was melt and stick to the kashira's near the edge(pics at fourth and last) I did not try to remove cause not want to damages to the tsukas. this tsuka is absolutely perfect original conditions which I have not seen in the market. this item is absolutely no return. Antique Japanese Sword Samurai Wakizashi Katana in Edo Koshirae & Shirasaya Set
For auction is this fine antique Japanese wakizashi sword set. The 17th century blade is a real beauty. The japanese polish is high quality and mint condition, completely damage free clean blade with very sharp edge, also flawless with only a couple of very minor usual kizu above the shinogi line(ridge) nothing on the cutting surface. The temperline is Sanbonsugi hamon. A very fine pattern developed in the 16th century by Kanemoto. The activities are truly fantastic with fully packed activities. Lot of Nie crystals, Sunagashi, Inazuma, elegant peaks and valleysm very dense and flamboyant temperline that is very scarce and desirable and hard to find, especialy on a minty blade. The grain work is also very good and healthy. Not overpolished blade, the tip is elegant with a fine clearly visible boshi also full of nice activities and shape. The ... moretang has 2 holes and unsigned with nice patination. Although it is unsigned there is sayagaki in the shirasaya. A judgment by the master polisher. Although I did not have time to have it translated fully it is clear that it states the blade was made by Katsukuni. The Katsukuni smiths were well known for being skilled at creating the famous sanbonsugi hamon. The Edo koshirae is great. The old saya has kaeritsuno(horn hook) too, the lacquer is good with minor dings from use. The double copper habaki in nicely filed and heavily gold washed. The copper tsuba has nice open theme and the rim is gold washed also. The tsuka has good old rayskin and tight ito. Finely detailed inlayed copper menukies in the shape of bulls, good iron fuchi and kashira also. Nothing rattles. Very nice sword. It also comes with copy of japanese registration card along with the shirasaya set too. Highly recommended sword made to high standard. Antique Signed Japanese Samurai Tanto Authentic Japanese Samurai Sword Dagger(Tanto) Dating most probably to the so called Nambokucho Periode from around 1400. It is signed Morimitsu. The blade looks to be Soshu School. Temperline looks like Suguha with wild Hada. The Tanto is mounted in an antqiue Edo periode Aikuchi Koshirae with Buffalo Horn Fuchi/ Kashira and very nice Shakudo Flower Menuki with Gold Zogan. Koiguchi. Kurigata and Pin are also made of Horn) The scabbard remains in good condition and still has a worn but all antique Sageo(String) attached to it. Habaki is made of copper with remains of silver platting. This is a nice well over 500 years old signed Samurai dagger in all antique mounts. There are no Hagire. Sold as is. Japanese Type 8 Army Officer Kyu-gunto Sword with Samurai Blade
Japanese Type 8 Army Officer Kyu-gunto Sword with Samurai Blade This is very scarce example of an early version of the Japanese Army Company Grade Officer's Kyu-gunto sword. Referred to as the Type 8. It was identified for me by Jim Dawson, the published expert on Japanese Military Swords. This is a unique version which has a silver plated brass hilt as opposed to a gilt one. Sword with scabbard is 23 1/2" long overall. With a blade length of 16 1/16" As you can see. The handle is an early Japanese military style, silver plated instead of gold plated(definitely a period job) A few examples have been found with a silver plated ferrule, but this is the only example I know of that is all silvered. The Mon on the handle is a 5-petaled Cherry Blossom. The Mon has a peg on it so that the blade can be removed in the traditional manner. ... moreOne of the combined Mon/peg is missing. The blade is an original. Hand forged Wakizashi, which has never been shortened. The original peg hole was hand punched, while a new hole was drilled to in order to remount it into Police fittings. There is a two character signature under the Habaki, as well as some notches. The blade has an old polish which has some clouding and stains, tiny edge nicks, etc. There are two spots where the blade is"tired" circled in the photos. The scabbard is in pretty good shape. No splits or cracks, with the Kojiri end cap missing. This probably originally had a metal scabbard which was lost. Inspection/return privilege. This is a Japanese sword in Honzukuri mountings. The blade is unknown. Yoroidoshi shape. I guess made Bizen school blade. The blade is in old full polish. Shows tiny scratches on surface but no stain, no rust and in Very good condition. The temper line is Gunome temper pattern and Yakizume temper at the point. The forging grain is tight Itame-hada with Masa and no forging flaws at all. The scabbard is urushi lacquered wood scabbard. Shows minor lacquer loss but no dent, no crack. The handle wrapp is old wrapping. Tight fit with Higo Zogan iron Fuchi and Kashira. The tsuba is Kikukagata shape brass tsuba. It is dress up with oldest Sanadahimo tassel. Japanese Vintage Iron Grappling Hook Military Armor Ninja Weapon "Kaginawa"
This is something different. This is a"Kaginawa" basically a multi purpose grappling hook. They've been made famous in Samurai/ Ninja movies when attackers used them to scale walls. They were also used as a multi purpose hanger for armor when a samurai was camping. They have even been known to be used by fishermen to tie up their boats. Wikipedia puts out a pretty useful description. This one is very well made of forged iron and the work done in making it is fantastic. The whole thing was one piece of iron that was split at the end to make the hooks that were then hammered into shape. The other end has a button hook hammered out to attach the ring. After it was forged into shape it looks like it was lacquered. Probably to protect it from moisture. The lacquer is flaking off in many places, mostly near the button hook. This is a Japanese sword in honzukuri mountings. This Gunto is guessed use in Kamikaze corps or the tank corps. The blade is signed"Kanazawa Jyu Fujiwara Nobutomo 金沢住藤原信友" Shinogi-zukuri shape, early Edo period ca. 1660 era made Fujishima school blade. The blade is in old full polish. Shows tiny scratches on surface. The temper line is Tobiyaki with choji temper pattern and ko-maru temper at the point. The forging grain is tight Koitame-hada with Tobiyaki. Edo period ca.1661 era made blade. The blade is in old polish, shows very light staines on surface but no rust and in good condition. The temper line is chu-suguha mix with nie(crystal) active temper throughout the blade and has ko-maru temper at the point. The forging grain is tight itame-hada and no forging flaw at all. The scabbard is brown ray-skin covered wood scabbard. Shows minor lacquer loss but no dent, no crack and in excellent condition. The handle is tight fit, tsuka-ito wrapping is no cut. This auction is for a vintage Up for auction is antique Japanese tanto sword saya- scabbard- this is WWII vet bring back item. From my research this is a Momoyama to early Edo period item. The design is wood with a black lacquered finish with copper flakes. Overall length of 15.5" 35mm x 20mm dimensions. Opening is 30mm x 8mm at the widest(see images) also has a Gokatana slot. There is a small crack near mouth where the wood seam is approx. 1 inch- otherwise a couple of small nicks and scratches are the only other issues. This is a Nice Rep roduction Of A Ja panese Shoto(Wakisashi) Sword With Painted Wood en Hand le And Scabbard. Engraved Blade And Ornate Kozuka. This is a cool old looking sword. I don't know if it is a repro or not as I got it from a wi dow whose deceased veteran husband was a collector of such swords. It is in good condition with a good sharp blad e. T he Kozuka(utility knife) appears that one of the decorated sides of the handle is missing or maybe was removed or made that way on purpose. I don' t know. There are quite a few c hips in the paint on the scabbard and a few scratches and chips in the paint on the handle too but all in all. It appears to be in pretty good cond ition. Japanese sword Tachi mounts and signed blade
For sale is a Japanese Tachi. The sword is in nice condition for its age. The scabbard is wooden with a very unique and beautiful lacquer pattern and fittings. There are some nicks and a crack in the lacquer at one seam but the scabbard is solid. Usually these tachi fittings are missing the leather ashi fittings. All fittings are here and are very nice. One of the leather ashi shows age. The handle and wrap is tight and in nice original condition. The length is about 41 inches overall with a 26 inch cutting edge. The blade is bright and in nice shape and signed Hidetoshi. Some small stains and what appears to be some length wise scratches from going in and out of the scabbard? The sword is signed on one side and not dated. This is a very unique and rare sword and fittings. A Japanese Wakizashi(Companion Sword) this is a WW11 or earlier sword, I don't know a lot about Japanese swords, I do know that this set is missing a few pieces, the spring steel clip that keeps the sword snug in the scabbard and maybe a chain that fits from the hole in the butt to the hole on the end of the guard. The blade is in good condition. No nicks, it is sharp. When the sword is in the scabbard the two together measure 27" long, just the sword alone measures 24" long overall, the blade is 19" long.
